Davis Hoping for Home-State Success with PDRA

SUWANEE, GA — Veteran Top Sportsman racer Ronnie “The King” Davis has enjoyed several wins over the years at South Georgia Ronnie Davis - RockinghamMotorsports Park (SGMP) and hopes that success will continue this weekend with the all-eighth-mile Professional Drag Racers Association (PDRA).

“Up the road here at Atlanta Dragway I can’t seem to win anything,” the golf cart dealer from Suwanee, GA, admitted. “But I’ve had a lot of good fortune at South Georgia in NHRA Division 2 races and some eighth-mile events, too. It’s a real good track and one of my personal favorites, so I’m definitely going after the win there this weekend.”

After qualifying number one for the PDRA season opener early in April with a 4.03-seconds pass at 182.92 mph at Rockingham, NC, Davis followed up the next week at the NHRA national event in Charlotte with a career-best 6.21 at 225.82 mph over the quarter mile at zMax Dragway. Since its inception in 2002, Davis has sponsored the NHRA Top Sportsman class through his business, Davis Golf Carts, a full-service dealer of stock and customized carts for home, business and racing use.

Davis’ sleek, black-and-gold colored, Tommy Mauney-built ’63 Corvette is motivated by a nitrous oxide-injected, 822-cubic-inch powerplant from Jon Kaase Racing Engines.

“I’m real pleased with the workmanship by Kaase. I’ve known Jon a long time and he freshened up the motor for me early this year and it’s making great power, it’s running good and after 14 runs it’s still like brand-new. You can’t ask for any better that that,” Davis said. “I also want to thank the guys at Coan Racing for their torque converter; it’s definitely making a difference for me.”

Davis Golf Cart Sales is the official pit vehicle provider to the PDRA, so in addition to maintaining and racing his car, Davis and longtime crewman Pete March will be managing a large display of new and used golf carts at SGMP available for sale to racers and fans.

“We’re also representing Braille Batteries, Rock Batteries; we’ll have the full line of MagnaFuel, which is a new PDRA Top Sportsman sponsor, and a whole lot of other stuff on display, too,” Davis stated. “It’s definitely a challenge and a lot of hard work to stay on top of everything, but it’s worth it to run a successful business like this that allows me to compete with a great organization like the PDRA.

“I’m really looking forward to the race this weekend,” Davis added. “I’ve been getting in better shape lately, I feel like I’m driving pretty good right now and I know the car is ready to go. I think we’ll be fast straight off the trailer and if things go the way I think they will I really believe we have a good shot at winning.”
