GRAND BEND, ONTARIO – Although a winner has yet to be decided in round two of the Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts, one thing is certain: the victor will be a competitor who has not won an event in the
popular drag race series.
Rain hampered the final two rounds of the race, held during the RPM Magazine Family PowerFest & Media Weekend at the Grand Bend Motorplex June 25-27.
The Quick 32 Sportsman Series is divided into two classes, the Top Dragster, and the Top Sportsman. Competitors from each class race among themselves, then the Top Dragster entry and the Top Sportsman entry do battle to decide the overall event winner.
With the Top Dragster final still not complete, Melanie Simmons of Orillia, Ontario will go up against Scott Wildgust of Wartburg, Ontario. Simmons, who qualified number three in the 16-car field with her now-supercharged entry, has never gone this many rounds in Quick 32 Sportsman Series racing. She will face Wildgust, a former Top Sportsman racer who qualified second.

Driving his supercharged ERD-powered Mike Bos dragster, Hinbest nailed down number one spot with a solid attempt, posting a 6.644-second, 212.01-mph lap. Hyde, who drove a Top Dragster last season, is now behind the wheel of a 2007 Chevy Cobalt Top Sportsman entry, a Jerry Bickel car with a nitrous-assisted 737-cubic inch engine, also from the engine shops of ERD. His lap of 6.933-seconds at 195.95-mph gave him the number one spot.

WARTBURG, ONTARIO – After driving a Top Sportsman 1957 Chevy in Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts competition in 2009, Scott Wildgust is racing this year in a car with the engine behind him.
The team debuted a Top Dragster entry at the opening round at Cayuga last month, and with team co-owner Bill White, Wildgust is looking to a positive season of racing.
“The car has a lot more potential,” noted Wildgust, who qualified number one in two Quick 32 Sportsman Series events last year. He also qualified number three with a 6.839-second pass at the 2010 opener, this time with the new 2010 Bos dragster, and went to the semi-final round.
The Top Dragster is powered by a 400-cubic inch small block Chevy engine, courtesy of the shops of Ajax Engines. A Kobelco supercharger sits atop the engine, which is fueled with an ERD (Engine Research & Development) fuel system. A two-speed Powerglide helps get the power to the rear wheels.

CAYUGA, ONTARIO – Competition in the Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts offers a diverse range of cars and powerplants, but all cars must either race in the Top Dragster class or the Top Sportsman class.
For each Quick 32 Sportsman Series event, all the Top Dragsters (T/D) and all the Top Sportsman (T/S) cars race among themselves, and then the winning entry of each class is pitted together for an overall winner.
And to date, the Top Dragster class has the nod, with five victories in seven races to date.
Winning the first race in the series was T.J. Schippling of Shakespeare, Ontario with his dragster during the opening round at Cayuga in 2009.

ORILLIA, ONTARIO – With a new ERD engine program, Melanie Simmons is hoping to be a strong player in this
year’s Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts. “We were disappointed we didn’t qualify for a couple of races last year,” said Simmons, who drives the Top Dragster of Toyrific Racing. “But we’ve stepped up for this year.”
The 540-cubic inch Chevy engine has received a supercharger and related equipment from the shops of Carl Spiering’s Engine Research & Development (ERD) and the team is hoping the increase in power will get the LJ Red dragster down the track quicker.
“We didn’t qualify and sat out a couple of races,” Simmons explained about the team’s woes last year. “That’s why we’ve upgraded the engine.” The car was previously fueled through an Enderle Fuel Injection system.

“We’ve gone from running around 180 in the quarter to close to 195 now with the new engine,” said Grubb. “It is a nice, awesome ride.”
