TORONTO, ON – During the off-season Tony Positano has been working on his Top Dragster in the hopes of making faster passes for the upcoming Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts.

“Last year we were qualifying 12th or 13th,” he explained. “And with the new additions coming on board this year I don’t want to get bumped out of the program.”

So Positano has had the 565-cubic inch Stefko Racing Engines powerplant in his 245″ Mike Bos Slip Joint Dragster freshened up, and has added a nitrous system with a MagnaFuel Racing Fuel Systems setup. PINE RIVER, ON – After running a season with a new engine in their 2004 Chevy Cavalier Top Sportsman entry, Grubb Racing is only making some minor changes for the upcoming Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts of drag racing.

“We feel pretty good about the upcoming year,” said team driver Darrin Grubb. “We’re not doing too much new on the car, just a little freshening.”

The team placed seventh in the Quick 32 Sportsman Series Championship Point Award Series in 2010, highlighted with a Top Sportsman division win and a Series event win at Cayuga during the Canadian Nitro Nationals. The team always qualified for the field during the season, and also made some first, second, and semi round appearances. Grubb said it was important for the team to run consistent.

ABERFOYLE, ON – He is not afraid of a challenge, and Quick 32 Sportsman Series competitor Fred DeJonge knows he will have his hands full when his 2008 Chevy Cobalt takes to the track this season.

The DGR DeJonge Goddard Racing entry will be sporting a pair of 88-millimeter turbochargers on the 585-cubic inch Chevy big-block, and he is looking forward to not only the challenge with the new combination, but learning a whole new set of rules for going racing.

“To me this is one of the most intriguing and cool setups,” he said. “It should be easy on engine parts and produce high horsepower levels.”

DeJonge has raced for a few years, starting with street-based cars and building faster cars. He drove in the Quick 32 Sportsman Series part of last season, and then handed over the driving duties to Frank Goddard of Guelph, Ontario.

COURTLAND, ON – For Doug Cadman, the 2010 Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts was frustrating, as the Top Sportsman driver struggled with engine issues after modifications from the previous year.

But for this season, Cadman will be ready with a new 526 cubic inch Alan Johnson 481X engine sitting under the hood of the unique and popular 1955 Ford Thunderbird.

“Last year was about the worst year I’ve ever had,” said Cadman, who has raced since the mid 1970s. “I was frustrated with the limitations of the Ford engine.  Although it was very reliable and consistent in prior years, difficulties emerged once I stepped it up in an attempt to knock another three-tenths off the ET slips,” hence the switch to the AJ unit.

STRATFORD, ON – Quick 32 Sportsman Series racer Spencer Hyde switched his ride from a Top Dragster to a Top Sportsman entry last season, and for 2011 believes he will be ready to take on the competition.

“I feel comfortable now in the Cobalt,” Hyde noted. “Last year was a learning curve, and this year our focus will be on winning some rounds.”

After competing with a Top Dragster in the first year of Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts, Hyde got behind the wheel of a 2007 Chevy Cobalt Top Sportsman in 2010, and was a quick study in learning the differences between a rear-engined dragster and the front-engined Cobalt.

“It took a while to get used to,” he said. “The car reacts a lot differently. It’s been a big learning curve, but Carl (Spiering) has coached me and things have gotten much better.”
