Victory Motorcycles rider Matt Smith ready to rebound at home track
CHARLOTTE – After an unfortunate start to the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, Victory Motorcycles
rider Matt Smith is ready for a rebound at this weekend’s seventh annual NHRA Four-Wide Nationals presented by Lowes Foods at zMax Dragway.
The two-time Pro Stock Motorcycle world champion inexplicably failed to qualify for the season-opener last month in Gainesville, Fla., bitten by some elusive electrical bugs, but after sorting through the issues in testing, Smith is expecting a big return at his hometown track.
“We’re going to bounce back,” said Smith, who hails from nearby King, N.C. “That was a total fluke in Gainesville; we had a gremlin in the wiring somewhere. We had tested so well before that race but struggled during the event itself, so we stayed after on Monday and found the problem. We confirmed it (last week) by running four quick passes at another test session, so we’re totally ready to go.”
Angie Smith remains confident in her Victory Motorcycles team after early Gatornationals exit
GAINESVILLE, FL – Despite a first-round stumble at the NHRA Gatornationals on Sunday at Gainesville Raceway,
Victory Motorcycles rider Angie Smith knows the potential of her Gunner has her primed for a good season.
Smith and her Matt Smith Racing team struggled with the Florida heat and humidity, as she qualified No. 13 and lost in the first round. Husband and teammate Matt Smith failed to qualify when he couldn’t get his Gunner to make a clean run down the Gainesville track.
“We know we have great horsepower,” Angie Smith said. “(The next race in) Charlotte is three or four weeks away, and I know we’ll test at least three times before now and then. I’m confident going into Charlotte that we’ll be just fine.”
Gator bites! Matt Smith logs rare DNQ as wife Angie slips into Florida field
GAINESVILLE, FL – Two-time world champion Matt Smith failed to qualify his Victory Gunner for the 47th annual
Gatornationals, ending a streak of 186 consecutive NHRA starts that dates back to 2004. Fortunately for the factory-backed team, his wife, Angie, managed to post a competitive 6.914-second pass at 192.85 mph on her identical Gunner to claim the No. 13 spot overall.
“It’s unbelievable to me that we had so many problems in four rounds of qualifying,” said Matt, the 2007 and 2013 series champion. “We tested so well this off-season, running 6.82s at 195-plus mph all day long, and we get here and have nothing but problems.

Off-season gains have Victory’s Matt Smith primed for Gatornationals victory
GAINESVILLE, FL – There may not be a Pro Stock Motorcycle racer more excited for the season-opener than Victory
Motorcycles Gunner rider Matt Smith.
The two-time champion made solid improvement in the off-season after his first year about the Victory Gunner, and he’s ready to show the class what he’s got when the season starts with the NHRA Gatornationals this weekend at Gainesville Raceway.
“We’re excited,” Smith said. “We worked really hard this winter trying to find some power. We worked with Elite Motorsports, and they helped us out a lot. We made some big gains over the winter, so I think it’s really going to show when we get to Gainesville.”
Smith raced to three final rounds and the No. 1 qualifier in Gainesville in 2015, developing a new engine and chassis along the way. Further work in the off-season has him and his Matt Smith Racing team primed to take a big step in 2016.

“We are 100 percent behind this deal,” Angie said. “There’s no 9-to-5, 40-hour work week. We’ve been putting in all of out time to make this program better because we want to make Victory happy and we want to be happy as racers. We want this partnership with Victory Motorcycles to last a lifetime. We want to get as many people as we can riding Victory Motorcycles. The best way to do that is win because that shows everyone how great these motorcycles are.”
