Coughlin Wins Vegas in Wife’s JEGS.com Super Comp Dragster

LAS VEGAS, NV – Sunday was a big day for five-time world champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. as he claimed his second career Super Comp victory to give the Coughlin family its 92nd NHRA national event victory overall.

“As a family, we’ve been very blessed,” Coughlin said. “We’ve had a phenomenal run in NHRA competition: winning races, winning championships, winning divisional races. I suppose if this were our last one, we’d all be extremely happy, but I sure hope we’re not done yet.”

It’s the latest notch in a racing resume that now includes 68 National Event wins – 16 of which have come in the Sportsman ranks. He remains the only driver in NHRA history to win in six different NHRA classes.

And to think Coughlin came close to not even racing in the event, because if his wife Samantha was able to get a late entry into the race, he was planning on pulling out and letting her drive the JEGS.com dragster.

Coughlin clears first hurdle, qualifies for Vegas eliminations

Courtesy of Jegs

LAS VEGAS, NV – Jeg Coughlin Jr. and the JEGS.com/Mopar Dodge Avenger rebounded nicely on Saturday to qualify No. 9 in Pro Stock for Sunday’s eliminations at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The team didn’t qualify last time out, but Coughlin said everybody buckled down in between races and got the JEGS.com car headed back in the right direction.

“Gainesville is behind us, and we made some great momentum testing in Charlotte before this race,” Coughlin said. “It didn’t solve all our problems, because we’re still looking for that something that will help our acceleration to the first 100 or 150 feet, but we’re doing better for sure.”

Coughlin turned in a best lap of 6.713 seconds at 205.57 mph.

“We’re working hard on getting the engine and chassis to work together,” Coughlin said. “But it’s still the best start we’ve had this season going into a Sunday program. We’re ready to do battle, I can promise you that.”

Coughlin gets lots of seat time at Tenn-Tuck

Courtesy of Jegs

BOWLING GREEN, KY – While he didn’t win one of the top prizes during this weekend’s Tenn-Tuck Triple Crown E.T. racing series event at Beech Bend Raceway Park, Troy Coughlin Jr. did accomplish a goal that may ultimately prove to be more beneficial as he got the opportunity to make numerous competitive runs behind the wheel of his JEGS.com dragster.

“For my first bracket racing outing of the year, I’m very pleased,” Coughlin said. “I got down to the last nine cars during Sunday’s $5,000-to-win race ,which was pretty good. I lost to Scott Lemen and he went on to win the race. It was cool watching him win and seeing the reaction of his family on the starting line. That’s what this sport is all about.

“I felt like I had a chance in almost every race and that’s really all you can ask for at these big bracket races because everyone you race is so tough. Overall, I drove well and the car was just about perfect. I just didn’t have the luck I needed.”

“We’re prepared to have twice as much fun in Vegas,” said Coughlin, who has 15 Sportsman victories at the national level in addition to his 52 Pro Stock trophies. “I love to race so I really enjoy the times we get to double-up and drive two cars. BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (March 21) – for the better part of 30 years, the Tenn-Tuck Triple Crown E.T. Bracket Racing series held at Beech Bend Raceway Park has been one of the crown jewels of the high stakes bracket racing circuit. This weekend, Troy Coughlin Jr. will look to etch his name into the record books of this historic event as he brings his JEGS.com dragster into battle against several hundred of the nation’s best sportsman drivers.

During the three-day event, Coughlin will have the opportunity to compete in up to five events, including three “Big Bucks” races with a $10,000 winner’s share and two additional “Little Bucks” events which pay $5,000 to the champion.

“I really enjoy bracket racing and I’m going to try and make them the heart and soul of my racing this year,” Coughlin said. “I was going to race in the $50,000 event in Memphis a couple weeks ago but it got rained out so this will be a good test for me.

Team JEGS Winless in Cajun Country

Courtesy of Jegs

BELLE ROSE, LA – Team JEGS racers Mike and Troy Coughlin Jr. did almost everything right as they pursued victories during this weekend’s ninth annual JEGS NHRA Cajun SPORTSnationals, but sometimes in drag racing even one’s best is not enough.

Despite a strong qualifying effort behind the wheel of his JEGS.com Top Sportsman Cobalt, Mike lost a heartbreaking race in Round one. Troy Jr., who was pulling double-duty in Super Comp and Top Dragster behind the wheel of his matching JEGS.com dragsters, fared only marginally better, losing in the third round of Top Dragster eliminations and the second round in Super Comp. All three losses by the JEGS Mail Order drivers were decided by just a few thousandths of a second.

“My car was unbelievably consistent,” Mike said. “It was one of the faster cars in Top Sportsman and we had no problems making it down the track every time. Some other drivers had problems because the track was hot, but we had no issues whatsoever. I just happened to lose a good race in the first round. I can’t complain at all. I did my job and the car did what it was supposed to do. We just didn’t turn on the win light. Sometimes that happens. You just have to accept it and move on.”

Troy Coughlin sees potential in rowdy turbo Pro Mod

Courtesy of Jegs

GAINESVILLE, FL – JEGS.com Chevrolet driver Troy Coughlin found out Saturday night exactly how recalcitrant a NHRA Pro Mod Series presented by ProCare Rx vehicle can be.

After two solid qualifying passes – his first with new tuner Steve Petty – that earned him the No. 6 position in the elimination field, Coughlin had to abort a run in Q3 when the front end of his turbocharged ’68 Camaro came off the asphalt. Then, in the first round of eliminations, Coughlin’s car shot right off the start line, and Coughlin had to reel it in.

Meanwhile, Raymond Commisso made it down the track to knock Coughlin out of the Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornationals.

“It stinks that it went the way it did, but that’s racing,” Coughlin said. “It’s got potential. We’re a young team with Steve (Petty) and the guys. It’s only going to bet better and faster for us.”
