JEGS PM Camaro Ready for the the Next Step in Houston

HOUSTON, TX – The evolution of Troy Coughlin’s JEGS.com Chevrolet Camaro Pro Mod continues this weekend at Royal Purple Raceway with the NHRA Spring Nationals.

Coughlin and his team, led by decorated crew chief Steve Petty, continue to develop the relatively new turbocharged ’68 Camaro. Pro Mod cars are a notoriously fickle lot, so getting them to go down the track in a fast, consistent basis is an arduous task that takes some time.

A past world champion in the NMCA, Coughlin has shown improvement with his new car, as tuner Petty works to improve the setup. The two have had only two races together, and Coughlin has qualified in the top half of the field in the NHRA Pro Mod Series presented by ProCare Rx at both Gainesville and Charlotte.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – For more than 50 years, the North Central Division of the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series raced at historic Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis and throughout the years, the JEGS Mail Order team has enjoyed it’s fair share of success at the venerable old drag strip.

T.J. Coughlin scores $20,000 payday in South Georgia

ADEL, Ga. (April 23) – Third generation drag racer Troy Coughlin Jr. scored one of the biggest victories of his career when he banked $20,000 Sunday at the Super Spring Buck Blast at South Georgia Motorsports Park.

Racing his JEGS.com-branded dragster, Coughlin won the main event. The victory was extra special for Coughlin as he defeated his friend, mentor and JEGS.com teammate, Kenny Underwood, in the final round.

“Winning any race is great but to be able to race Kenny in the final makes it even better,” Coughlin said. “He’s one of the best racers in the country and it’s an honor just to line up against him. We raced each other for the first time last year and I was lucky enough to beat him. I told him he owed me one. Now, he owes me two and I’m sure it’s just a matter of time before he evens the score.

“This was a great race and we really enjoyed coming down here. [Track operator] Rowland Wood and his staff should be very proud of this event. It was awesome.”

Jeg Coughlin Jr. seeking more history in Houston

Courtesy of Jegs

HOUSTON, TX – Royal Purple Raceway and the NHRA Spring Nationals will always have a special place in the memory of four-time Pro Stock champion Jeg Coughlin Jr., driver of the JEGS.com/Mopar Dodge Avenger.

The southeast Texas track is the site of some important milestone victories in Coughlin’s career, and if things work out, there could me more memorable wins coming at the April 27-29 event.

“Houston will always bring fond memories to me; it was the site of my first Super Stock win in 1994 and my first Pro Stock win in 1997,” Coughlin said. “There is something about the track and the environment there that have always yielded favorable results for me and our teams. I love the place.”

Coughlin said the atmosphere the Angel family has created at Royal Purple Raceway over the years is a big factor in the comfort level he enjoys at the facility.

Mr. Aruba Winter Nationals collect more than $5K for JEGS Foundation

Courtesy of Jegs

DELAWARE, OH – The Mr. Aruba Winter Nationals is not your normal drag racing event.

Sure, races are won and lost, but the real reason for the gathering is to raise money for cancer research. This year, the “competition” between old drag-racing friends produced more than $5,000 for the JEGS Foundation Racing For Cancer Research project, the longtime benefactor of the Mr. Aruba Winter Nationals.

The Mr. Aruba Winter Nationals, hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Aruba (aka Mike DeChicco and Jane Graebner), brought together old friends and new racers to “Mr. Aruba’s Dodgeland.” This year, $5,208 was donated through the JEGS Foundation to the James Cancer Hospital at Ohio State University and the Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus.

NHRA star Jeg Coughlin Jr. accepted the donation on behalf of the JEGS Foundation.

Another big weekend for JEGS Racing at Piedmont Top ET Classic

JULIAN, NC – A week after taking the trophy at Kil-Kare Raceway in his home state of Ohio, Troy Coughlin Jr. went down south and added to his burgeoning drag racing resume with a semifinal finish in the Top ET Classic at Piedmont Dragway.

Racing in Saturday’s $20,000-to-win main event, Coughlin drove his JEGS.com dragster deep into eliminations before losing to former national champion Chip Johnson by a narrow margin. Coughlin also posted a Round 2 finish Friday night and a third-round finish in Sunday’s finale.

“We raced hard and came close but couldn’t quite close out a win this time,” Coughlin said. “I had a .019-second reaction time and ran right on my dial-in in the semis but it still wasn’t enough. Chip was just a little bit better. I was fortunate enough to get a win last weekend but we just couldn’t keep that momentum going.

After big first-round upset, Coughlin bows in 4-Wide semifinals

Courtesy of Jegs

CHARLOTTE, NC – Five-time world champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. recorded the biggest upset of the opening round of Sunday’s pro eliminations at the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals before slipping away to a semifinal finish at zMax Dragway.

Jumping off the starting line with the best reaction time in the class — .026 seconds –Coughlin piloted his JEGS.com/Mopar Dodge Avenger from the 16th and final qualifying position to a better elapsed time than the higher-ranked cars of Ronnie Humphrey and Rodger Brogdon to advance out of the first round along with low qualifier Jason Line. Under the unique four-wide format, the two quickest drivers of each foursome of racers move forward in the competition.

“It was exciting to get that win and have the car react well, especially after a tough qualifying session,” Coughlin said. “We really struggled the first two rounds of qualifying and the guys caught up to it a little in Q3 and Q4 and we were able to get the last spot, which was a feat in itself.

“Everyone worked hard overnight and the car was happier and in control today but still a little lazy. It was telling us to give it more so that’s what we did going into the semifinals.”

Late light spoils Troy Coughlin’s Pro Mod bid in Charlotte

Courtesy of Jegs

CHARLOTTE, NC – JEGS.com Pro Mod driver Troy Coughlin made a heroic run in Saturday’s final qualifying session at zMax Dragway, but then lost in the first round of eliminations to exit the 4-Wide NHRA Nationals much sooner than he expected.

Coughlin had been out of the field before making his final run, but rebounded nicely by posting a blistering 6.013-second quarter-mile pass at 245.81 mph to qualify the JEGS.com 1968 turbocharged Camaro in the No. 7 spot.

When the action moved to sudden-death eliminations, Coughlin managed to improve in with a pass of 6.005 at 250.97 mph, but he fell on a holeshot to Mike Knowles, who ran a slower but winning 6.031 at 243.50 mph.

“We’d been driving decent most of the weekend,” Coughlin said. “I just got beat on a holeshot. Where that reaction time came from was obviously a loss of concentration somewhere. It’s a bummer.”

Coughlin Focused on Unique 4-Wide Format at Upcoming NHRA Nationals

Courtesy of Jegs

CHARLOTTE, NC – Drag racer Jeg Coughlin Jr. has won five NHRA titles and a whopping 68 national events due in large part to his meticulous preparation. Aside from the expert crews he’s always had on his JEGS.com race teams, his legendary attention to detail in the cockpit has made him one of the most feared and successful drivers in the 61-year history of the sport.

For this reason alone, the unique format of the upcoming third annual VisitMyrtleBeach.com NHRA 4-Wide Nationals at zMax Dragway has him working overtime.

“I’ve been racing for more than two decades and 99.99-percent of the time I’ve been dealing with one opponent at a time,” the 41-year-old Coughlin said. “That all goes out the window with the 4-Wide Nationals. I’ve only done this format once before because I didn’t race Pro Stock last year so it’s really going to be a test for me. I’m very excited about the challenge.”

Troy Coughlin Trusts in Petty to Deliver Big Race in Charlotte

Courtesy of Jogs

CHARLOTTE, NC – When world champion drag racer Troy Coughlin looks for positives heading into NHRA Pro Mod Series action at the third annual VisitMyrtleBeach.com 4-Wide Nationals, he needs to go no further than his own JEGS.com pit and new crew chief Steve Petty.

Petty was signed to head Coughlin’s 2,500-horsepower, turbocharged Chevrolet Camaro during the offseason. Prior to this assignment, Petty tuned the turbo entries of Leah Pruett and Melanie Troxel, who raced to the Pro Mod final the last time the NHRA tour ran at zMax Dragway.

“Steve didn’t just win the Charlotte race last year, he had both cars in the final,” Coughlin said. “You can’t get much better than that. It was quite an accomplishment and one of the main reasons we’re so happy he joined our team. He actually won four of the last five races on the 2011 schedule, so he obviously knows what he’s doing.”
