NHRA’s most recent winner, Shane Gray, looking to cap season with another Wally
POMONA, CA – With plans to turn his Valvoline/Nova Services Chevrolet Camaro over to his capable son Tanner in
2017, Pro Stock driver Shane Gray has exactly one race left to add to his personal collection of Wally trophies. That opportunity, which occurs this weekend with the 52nd annual Auto Club NHRA Finals, looks pretty promising with Gray coming off a huge victory Oct. 30 in Las Vegas.
“Smiles have come pretty easy this past week,” Gray admitted. “We’re a pretty happy group any way but it was extra fun to get one in the books for the crew guys and all of our friends and family that have been so supportive.
Shane Gray drives to the Vegas winner’s circle, then off into the sunset
LAS VEGAS – A couple hours after Valvoline/Nova Services driver Shane Gray won the NHRA Toyota Nationals on
Sunday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, he fired up the Chevrolet Camaro and drove it out of the winner’s circle and back to the pit area.
It was a fitting moment for the veteran Gray, driving off into the sunset, as he is handing over the keys of the Gray Motorsports Pro Stock car to his son, Tanner, for 2017 and beyond.
“I’ve always wanted to drive the car back to the pits,” Gray said. “It was a great weekend. I think I’ve been to nine semis this year and I haven’t
won since the U.S. Nationals in 2014, so it’s a great day.
As No. 4 qualifier, Shane Gray a solid contender at Las Vegas NHRA race
LAS VEGAS – Drag racer Shane Gray has a fast racecar this weekend, as indicated by an impressive top qualifying
pass of 6.683 at 205.78 mph, which has him ranked fourth in the field of the 16th annual NHRA Toyota Nationals. Now the second-generation pro from Mooresville, N.C., hopes to translate his fast start to a victory.
“We’ve been very close so many times this year but we haven’t found a way to take that last step and get to the Winner’s Circle,” Gray said. “History tells us that consistency is the No. 1 thing you need to win at this level and I believe we’ve shown everyone this Valvoline/Nova Services Chevrolet Camaro is very consistent.
Just two races left for hotshot Shane Gray to punch through for a victory
LAS VEGAS – Last week’s announcement that Shane Gray’s son Tanner will be taking over driving duties of the
Valvoline/Nova Services Chevrolet Camaro in 2017 has left Shane with just two races left to secure another win for himself. That places an extra premium on this weekend’s 16th annual NHRA Toyota Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, a race the entire Gray family would like to win.
“Yeah Tanner’s nipping at my heels now so I better bear down these last few events and try to get another Wally before they put me out to pasture,” Shane Gray said with a laugh. “The reality is, we win as a team and lose as a team and I can tell you I will be just as happy and satisfied when Tanner wins next year as I am whenever I win. It’ll be fun either way.
Tanner Gray to take over family’s Pro Stock car for 2017
MOORESVILLE, NC – The highly successful Gray family will have another member competing in the NHRA Mello
Yello Drag Racing Series next season when Tanner Gray climbs behind the wheel of Gray Motorsports’ Valvoline/Nova Services Pro Stock Chevrolet.
Tanner is the teen-age son of Shane Gray, a multi-time winner in the Pro Stock class, and grandson of Johnny Gray, a winner in Funny Car who also raced Pro Stock for many years.
“I’ve been around it since I was 9 or 10 years old,” Tanner Gray said. “I think it’s really cool to be able to do what they’ve done. We’ll see if we can win some championships one day.
“I’m pretty excited. I’ve known about it for a while, and I’ve gotten to test, so I’ve kinda calmed down a little bit, but I’m pretty excited for it.”
Valvoline/Nova Services ace Shane Gray charges to another semifinal finish
DALLAS – Another race, another strong semifinal finish for Valvoline/Nova Services driver Shane Gray. Gray raced
to the semifinals of the AAA Texas FallNationals Sunday at Texas Motorplex, winning at least two elimination rounds for the ninth time in 21 races of the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season. He’s now reached the semis in three consecutive races and in four of the last five events.
“We’ve become a semifinal machine, which is great in one sense because that means we’re winning rounds,” Gray said. “But it also means we’re coming up a little short of our goal, which is winning races. If we keep knocking on that door, we’ll knock it down one of these days.”
Texas heat doesn’t wilt Shane Gray, who powers into Pro Stock’s top four
DALLAS – While most of his peers struggled with Saturday’s heat at Texas Motorplex, Pro Stock driver Shane Gray
went the other way, powering to a weekend-best 6.591-second pass at 209.98 mph to jump his Valvoline/Nova Services Chevrolet Camaro up to the No. 4 qualifying spot at the 31st annual AAA Texas NHRA Fallnationals.
“The car hooked up and stayed glued to the track and I knew by the time I shifted into high gear that we were on a good run,” Gray said. “When we analyzed yesterday’s better pass, the 6.61, we knew we had a lot of room to improve so the guys went to work and made it happen.
Strong finish to 2016 could still yield huge rewards for Pro Stock ace Shane Gray
DALLAS – As the second half of the six-race Countdown to the Championship begins this weekend with the 31st
annual AAA Texas NHRA Fallnationals, Pro Stock driver Shane Gray and his Valvoline/Nova Services Chevrolet Camaro crew still have lots of goals they’d like to accomplish.
First is a continued run at the 2016 Mello Yello world title, which is still within reach of Gray’s red-hot race team. Secondly, the group would love to surpass the career-best fourth-place finishes Gray carded in 2010 and 2014. Finally, Gray is anxious to score another victory to add to his resume.
Shane Gray drives Valvoline/Nova Services Chevy to eighth semifinal of 2016
READING, PA – Shane Gray drove his Valvoline/Nova Services Chevrolet to another semifinal finish, racing to the
third round of the Dodge NHRA Nationals on Sunday at Maple Grove Raceway. It was the eighth semifinal appearance of the season for Gray, and he maintained a top-five spot in the Pro Stock standings at the halfway point of the Countdown to the Championship.
In addition, Sunday’s race came after an eventful day for his Gray Motorsports team, as a battery caught fire in Gray’s car early Sunday morning. The fire was quickly extinguished and the damage repaired to put Gray’s car on the track.
Another good qualifying run has Shane Gray excited about Reading eliminations
READING, PA – Shane Gray continued an impressive streak with his Valvoline/Nova Services Chevrolet Camaro in
qualifying for the Dodge NHRA Nationals on Saturday at Maple Grove Raceway.
Gray secured the No. 4 spot in Reading, extending his streak to 15 consecutive races where he has qualified in the top half of the field, and in the last four races, he has qualified fourth or better.
“That’s pretty cool,” Gray said. “It says a lot about our engine shop and how hard those guys have worked this year. We would have loved to have gotten in another run to try and go even quicker, but Mother Nature had other ideas.”
