Crampton sees a bright future for GEICO/Lucas Oil team

HOUSTON, TX – GEICO/Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster driver Richie Crampton is doing all he can to be the best he can be for his Richie CramptonMorgan Lucas Racing team. This week, before heading to the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA SpringNationals, that included a first-time visit with an eye doctor.

“I decided it would be a good idea to have them checked,” Crampton said. “It falls in line with all the other stuff that (team owner) Morgan (Lucas) has me working on to try to get better in general. That includes seeing a nutritionist and working out and all that.

“I train hard with PitFit (Training) to work on my physical fitness, and it’s an attempt to be better in any possible way to do the best job.”

Crampton’s first Four-Wide experience goes up in tire smoke

CHARLOTTE, NC – Despite having the third pick of lanes for the first round of the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals on Sunday, Richie CramptonGEICO/Lucas Oil driver Richie Crampton and his Morgan Lucas Racing team figured they had a little luck on their side.

Crew chief Aaron Brooks picked the second lane, the same lane where Crampton made his best pass of the weekend to grab the No. 11 qualifying spot, but the unthinkable happened and Crampton smoked the tires not long after launch, ending his day.

“We were fairly confident we could do what we did in qualifying in Q3 and skip it on down there,” Crampton said. “We really weren’t worried about smoking the tires at all. I was more fixated on doing my job on the starting line and not leaving anything on the table.

Crampton ready for first attempt at NHRA Four-Wide Nationals

CHARLOTTE, NC – In the mind of GEICO/Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster driver Richie Crampton, he has driven a Funny Car, Pro Richie CramptonStock, and Pro Stock Motorcycle during this weekend’s NHRA Four-Wide Nationals.

That’s because Crampton, the No. 11 qualifier for Sunday’s eliminations, spent time on the starting line watching the various professional classes run through the staging procedure. He is experiencing the Four-Wide Nationals for the first time as a driver. The procedure is different here because four cars stage instead of the usual two.

“As a crewmember, I used to guide Morgan (Lucas) into the staging beams, so I had a fairly good idea on how the whole procedure works,” Crampton said. “The people at zMax Dragway put numbers above the staging lights on top of the Christmas Tree, which helped a lot to identify which one you’re supposed to be looking at.

Crampton ready for challenges of Four-Wide Nationals

CHARLOTTE, NC – At nearly every event this season, GEICO/Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster driver Richie Crampton will compete at Richie Crampton - Burnoutthe host racetrack for the first time.

That will be the case this weekend when he races in Charlotte, but another variable is in the equation at the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals: Instead of racing against one other competitor, Crampton will square off against three other drivers at the same time in the event’s unique format.

“It’s another stepping-stone in all the various things I have to learn about driving these cars,” Crampton said. “That’s the next step, to try to get used to that Four-Wide race because that’s going to be part of our schedule for the future. I’m still learning, but it’s definitely going to be a little different.”

GEICO/Lucas Oil’s Crampton drops first-round match in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, NV – The learning experiences continue for GEICO/Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster driver Richie Crampton after a first-Richie Cramptonround defeat at the SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals on Sunday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The 30-year-old from Adelaide, Australia – who is now an American citizen – was left scratching his head after falling to J.R. Todd due to a slower-than-usual reaction time and a slower-than-expected elapsed time.

“I was dead late on the Tree,” Crampton said. “He ran an .82, which was a decent run. I’ve got a feeling we could’ve run a little better.”

Crampton takes fast, consistent GEICO/Lucas Oil dragster to eliminations

LAS VEGAS, NV – Not only was GEICO/Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster driver Richie Crampton all smiles after qualifying No. 6 for Richie Crampton - 2014 Vegas #1the SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals on Saturday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, but he had a bit of swagger in his step.

Why? Because the rookie made three solid passes in qualifying, backing up his top pass of 3.798 seconds at 319.90 mph.

“Making three fairly solid runs in qualifying was good,” Crampton said. “It always gives you more confidence going into Sunday with some good runs under you belt.”

GEICO/Lucas Oil’s Crampton looking for redemption in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, NV – GEICO/Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster driver Richie Crampton is looking for a little redemption in Sin City.

Richie Crampton - 2014After red-lighting in the first round of the most recent event in Gainesville, Fla., Crampton is itching to get back behind the wheel for this weekend’s SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway

The loss was somewhat softened because his teammate Morgan Lucas won that round — and another after that — but Crampton wants round-wins, too.

“The team in general had a great weekend in Gainesville,” Crampton said. “That was a little counterproductive for us because we’re already keeping our eye on the points and we’re 10th right now. We would’ve liked to have won that round, so I’m looking for a little redemption after my last run was a red-light. I can’t wait to get back in the race car and make it right.”

Lucas enjoys stellar season debut at Gatornationals

GAINESVILLE, FL – The only way Lucas Oil/GEICO Top Fuel dragster driver Morgan Lucas would have enjoyed the NHRA GEICOGatornationals Sunday at Auto-Plus Raceway at Gainesville any more would have been if he ended up in victory lane.

Lucas came up two rounds short of that, but he was all smiles after a semifinal appearance in his first race of 2014.

“It’s kinda cool because I’ve been daydreaming about coming down here and racing since the start of the season,” Lucas said. “I’m not used to not testing and not racing full time, so it’s just different.

GEICO/Lucas Oil rookie Crampton drops first-round match to teammate

GAINESVILLE, FL – The learning curve for GEICO/Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster driver Richie Crampton hit a speed bump during the first round of the NHRA Gatornationals on Sunday at Auto-Plus Raceway at Gainesville.

Crampton, a rookie in Top Fuel, left a touch too soon in his matchup with Morgan Lucas Racing teammate Morgan Lucas, allowing his team owner and the man he replaced in the GEICO/Lucas Oil dragster to get the win.

“I flat-out made some rookie errors up there,” Crampton said. “The car didn’t want to roll real fast, I was a little relaxed on the brake handle, and I turned the top bulb right on well ahead of time, which kind of got me out of sequence.”
