BOOHER, PAYNE WIN AT ROUTE 66
JOLIET, IL – Brandon Booher scored his second win of the year and Jay Payne notched his 72nd career victory at 
this weekend’s Burndown at Sundown NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Route 66 Raceway.
Booher, Urbana, Ill., qualified No. 5 in Top Alcohol Dragster and beat Wayne Butler and Krista Baldwin in rounds one and two to earn the trip to the final to face off with Jared Dreher out of Clinton, Ind. Dreher was out first but Urbana took the lead by the 60 foot mark and held on for the win with a pass of 5.406 seconds at 269.40 mph. Booher won earlier this year at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio.
Baldwin upset No. 1 qualifier Mia Tedesco who went on to win in Super Gas over reigning NHRA Lucas Oil World Champion Jacob Elrod. Elrod was out first but Tedesco ran 9.902 on the 9.90 index for her seventh divisional win over three different classes.
In Top Alcohol Funny Car is was California racer Payne taking the win over fellow California runner John Lombardo Jr. Lombardo took the early lead but went into sever tire shack as Payne raced by for the win at 5.573, 266.37. The win was Payne’s 72nd overall with 41 in funny car and the rest in Top Alcohol Dragster.
Greg Kamplain scored his second win of the year in three final rounds in Comp Eliminator taking out Jeremy Bailey, N. Manchester, Ind. Kamplain, Brownsburg, Ind., went 6.882 at 193.35 in his dragster. He won the NHRA national event at Gainesville Raceway back in March and was runner up at the recent JEGS SPORTSnationals at Beech Bend Raceway Park.
Nick Folk and Kyle Riley added wins in Super Stock and Stock respectively. Folk, Durand, Ill., took his sixth win as Mike Lund, Bettendorf, Iowa, fouled with a red light and Riley, Sauk Village, Ill., bagged his third in three final rounds when Brina Splingaire, Kronenwetter, Wis., broke out.
The NHRA Harley-Davidson Drag Racing Series was also in action at Route 66 with reigning champion Janette Thornley, Statesville, N.C., winning in Pro Fuel over Dennis Fisher, Dayton, Ohio. Thornley went 7.416, 179.35 to Fisher’s 7.391, 173.78. Thornley also set a national record in round one with a speed of 182.03 mph.
William Rowe Jr. and John Toth each had a chance to double up this weekend in the Harley series. Rowe won in Draggin’ Bagger Harley but lost to Marc Inguersen in Pro Gas and Toth won in Hot Street but came up short against Greg Baugh in Street Pro.
Additional winners this weekend were Philip Smida, Canfield, Ohio, in Super Comp; Barney Barnhart, Wadsworth, Ohio, in Super Street; JB Strassweg, Evansville, Ind., in the Spitzer Racecars Top Dragster; Scott Wasko, Columbia Station, Ohio, in the Brodix/Steve Schmidt Top Sportsman; and Steve Matthews , S. Chicago Heights, Ill., in Screamin’ Eagle Performance Harley.
In Pro Stock Snowmobile Matt Ernst, Clinton, Iowa, took a close one over Rick Woodruff, Elmira, N.Y. Ernst went 8.253 seconds at 154.65 mph to Woodruff’s 8.237, 156.06.
