Blistering-fast Morgan ready to light up Phoenix eliminations
PHOENIX, AZ – Riding a hot streak throughout the weekend so far at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park, FireAde
Chevrolet Pro Stock driver Larry Morgan has demonstrated that he will be a force to be reckoned with during eliminations at the CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals.
Friday’s second qualifying session proved quickest for Morgan’s FireAde Chevrolet Camaro with a pass of 5.569 seconds that was good enough for the No. 8 spot. Matched up against No. 9 Greg Anderson, Morgan is raring to turn on the win light during the first round of eliminations.
“We went from sixth to eighth and now to the second-quickest car of the last session,” Morgan said. “That’s improvement that I like to see. We’re really looking forward to going into the first round tomorrow because of it.
“It’s an exciting time for me. Everything is more laid back and I’m having fun. Now I can focus on getting a win light in the first round tomorrow and then three more to follow right after it.”
Aside from another solid qualifying effort this year, Morgan continued to turn heads by posting the top speed of the weekend during Q3. His 211.89-mph run was enough to snag that honor, a feat that would have seemed almost impossible last year.
“I felt like I was behind all last year because I didn’t have the support that I needed from the manufacturer or the engine program but now I do,” Morgan said. “I’ve got everything going for me. It’s really a dream come true.
“Things keep getting better and better for me every time I strap in,” Morgan said. “I’m getting used to the car, fixing it the way I like, and liking the way I feel in it. I’m just excited to be here and in the whole program I have behind me now. I’m going to win one of these races pretty soon; I can feel it. Hopefully that starts tomorrow.”
Eliminations will begin at approximately noon, Sunday, with both qualifying and elimination action broadcast on ESPN2 on tape-delay basis.
