Salt Lake City, UT – Travis Gaylord is a no frills kind of guy. Take his race car. A 1987 Ford Mustang Notchback in simple black, flat black to be more specific. No fancy computer gizmos, no delay boxes or throttle stops. He paints a number on the window and goes out and runs it. In fact, he did just that at Rocky Mountain Raceways to deadly accuracy.

“The car ran really well, and right on the dial in,” said Gaylord. “I also got a bit lucky, which in Drag Racing never hurts. A few bye runs made it easier, but in the end I had to run the number.”

Gaylord’s 801 Racing sponsored Mustang had plenty of people rooting for it due to the fact that it’s his home track, and the home of 801 Racing. Just about the whole gang was out there rooting him on.  That can go a long way in the confidence department. In Saturday’s No Box ET final, the crowd went wild as Gaylord’s opponent, Jeff Cornick went red. Then it was time for the big show to start; the run for the contingency.

Gaylord’s No Box ET car was lined up against the Box ET winner, James Shepherd. It was technology and electronics vs. guts and the right foot. Gaylord’s dial-in was an 11.00 while Shepherd’s was a 10.27. As the light flashed, Gaylord was off and running. At the stripe it was Gaylord taking the win with a 11.002 to Shepherds’ 10.265. Family, friends, fans, and sponsors all raised their hands in celebration.

“It was a great victory, especially since the 801 Racing gang was all here to see it,” added Gaylord. “I think we had over twenty people in the winner’s circle photo, it was pretty dang cool. My car is 801 powered, and I won’t run without it. Last season we tore down the motor with 500 passes on it.

The parts looked great! I also want to thank my other sponsor, Brock and Heath from Premier Performance out of South Jordan, UT.  They helped me out a ton with parts this year, and I honestly don’t think I would have made it to the track without them. “

Winning an Ironman at the Salt Lake Nitro Jam is not enough to slow down Travis Gaylord. He is already planning on ways to go faster and keep that deadly consistency.  With 801 Racing on the side of his car, and 801 Racing Oil in the car, Gaylord has all he needs to continue his winning ways.
