12 Gunslingers show for the Texas Raceway Bounty

Kennadale, TX – With a Three Thousand Dollar Bounty placed on Texas Raceway’s 3.72 track recorded set by Frankie Taylor in 2011 the gloves came off as did the blower rule . It looked like a modern day racing night from the seventies with fifty-seven Chevy’s, Studebaker, Camaro, Vegas, sixty-three Corvettes and a lone Beretta .

First round of qualifying was a shake rattle rock and roll as everyone tried to power their way down track. The Texas Bounty Hunter HelAir 57 Chevy driven by Gaylen Smith showed the way with 4.195 seconds elasped time at 162.78 mile per hour followed by the Small Block Mafia 63 Corvette driven by Gene Hector, Randell Reid’s 57 Chevy, David Baldwin Butler sponsored 63 Corvette, The Grimm Reaper 63 Corvette driven by Steve Wiley, Darren Inman 96 Beretta, Tim Cruce 54 Studebaker, Dennis Hendrix 86 Firebird, Jim Brinkerhoff 69 Camaro, Chris Shortridge 02 Turbo’ed Camaro, and Kent Birkes 77 Vega .

With the temperatures getting better and eveyone knowing what they could not throw at the track, Gaylen Smith in the 57 improved to a 4.05 seconds elasped time at 174.26 miles per hour, followed by Gene Hector shooked not able to improve, Randell Reid sliding all round,David Baldwin Mr. Consistant improved his run,Steve WIley bleching flames but shook ,Darren Inman blew a intake gasket out filling the top end with smoke, Ron Curly 67 Mailbu made a clean run, Jim Brinkerhoff improved his run, Tim Cruce not able to improve, Dennis Hendrix giant wheel stand and shut off, Chris Shortridge spun the tires, Kent Birkes broke and was not able to return.

Final Qualifying Order

1. Gaylen Smith 4.05 @ 174.26

2. Gene Hector 4.28 @ 138.22

3. Randell Reid 4.30 @ 136..08

4. David Baldwin 4.30 @ 161.92

5. Steve Wiley 4.62 107.66

6. Darren Inman 4.65 @ 149.46

7. Ron Curley 4.74 @ 151.51

8. Jim Brinkerhoff 4.84 @ 112.06

Dennis Hendrix 5.48 127.91

Chris Shortridge 6.06 @ 93.91

Kent Birkes Broke

First Round

Ron Curley broke and in a show of sportsmanship the drivers decided to wait for Darren Inman to make repairs but with a midnite curfew time ran out and Cruce and Hendrix were inserted into the field .

David Baldwin cut a .070 light and ran 4.33 @ 162 to defeat a tire smoking Steve WIley

Gene Hector cut a .276 light and ran 4.23 @ 142 to defeat Dennis Hendrix 5.56 @ 130

Gaylen Smith cut a .154 and ran 4.03 @ 172 to defeat Jim Brinkerhoff better light of .115 and improved time of 4.29

Randell Reid cut a .067 light and ran 4.20 @ 150 to defeat Chris Shortridge who go crossed up narrowly missing the wall .

Round Two

Gaylen Smith cut a .110 light and ran 3.94 @ 183.89 to defeat David Baldwin who slowed to 4.65 @ 117

Just as Gene Hector started for the water box his parachute came out and he was shut off. In a show of sportsmanship Randall Reid shut off his 57 and allowed Gene’s crew to repack the parachute .

Randell Reid cut a .022 light and ran a 4.11 @ 159 to defeat Gene Hector who had the better light of .008 but slowed to a 4.63 @ 113

Final Round

It was a all 57 Chevy final as The Texas Bounty Hunter Gaylen Smith faced Randell Reid.

Randall who had lane choice, the slower car gets lane choice in Texas OutLaw ProMods, put Gaylen in the Tower lane which is most of the time the slower lane.

Randell cut a .024 light to Gaylen’s late .121 light but only ran a 4.19 @ 153 after losing traction about the 330 lights handing Gaylen Smith’s 3.96 run the WIn .
