Team JEGS drivers Jeg Jr., Mike and Troy Coughlin Jr. all sit No. 1 in respective classes

DELAWARE, OH – They may be racing on opposite coasts but Team JEGS drag racers Jeg Coughlin Jr., Mike Coughlin and Troy Coughlin Jr. are unified in one important aspect Friday -all three are qualified No. 1 in their respective categories, bringing coast-to-coast glory to the yellow-and-black brand.

Jeg Jr. and Mike are tearing things up in Pro Stock and Top Dragster, respectively, at the 32nd Magic Dry NHRA Nationals in Seattle, while Troy Jr. placed himself atop the Top Alcohol Dragster class at the Division 1 points meet at Atco Dragway in New Jersey.

“Jeg and I were watching the results, and we both were really happy and proud of what T.J. was doing in Atco,” Mike Coughlin said. “The fact that T.J. got No. 1 and Jeg got No. 1 back, I’m really excited for JEGS as a company to have three of us at No. 1. It’s never happened before, and it’s a big deal to the company and all our associates.”

Jeg Jr. looked sharp in posting a pass of 6.539 seconds at 210.57 mph in his JEGS.com Elite Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro at picturesque Pacific Raceways.

“It’s a very exciting day for JEGS and our teammates,” Jeg Jr. said. “I’ve still got some work to do because Mike and T.J. are done with qualifying and are moving into eliminations, while I’ve got two more sessions to go. Not sure about the weather tomorrow, but if someone is able to improve and go quicker than me, then our car should be able to improve as well. Hats off to the entire Elite Motorsports team.”

Jeg Jr. was bumped from the No. 1 spot during the second round by Elite teammate Alex Laughlin, but Jeg Jr. improved, too, to grab the top position back.

“I couldn’t see what Alex ran but I heard Alan Reinhart on the P.A. getting excited and saying he had bumped me out of the spot,” Jeg Jr. said. “I was confident in the tuneup in my car because we refined it from what we had in Q1, and I was able to get the No. 1 spot back so that’s very satisfying.”

Brother Mike, a recent winner in Indy and Chicago, followed suit and threw down a run of 6.152 seconds at 222.62 mph to show the way in Top Dragster.

“I really felt like we needed to change the pulley on our new supercharger, but (crew chief) Greg Cody talked me out of it,” Mike said. “Thank God he did because it cooled down a little more than I anticipated, and the car was perfect from end to end.

“Normally, a 6.15 isn’t good enough for No. 1 in this class, but today it was. Now, we’re heading into eliminations in the top spot, and it’s a big deal because we’ve got a first-round bye.”

Norwalk national event winner Troy Jr. was all business in New Jersey, cranking out a powerful pass of 5.233 seconds at 277.26 mph to lead Top Alcohol Dragster in his JEGS.com McPhillips Racing rail.

“This is basically a home track for the guys at McPhillips Racing,” Troy Jr. said. “We really want to win this race. And it sure is cool for Uncle Mike and Uncle Jeg to qualify No. 1 as well. I’m really happy for our team and everyone at JEGS.”
