COUGHLIN AND DREW CROWNED CHAMPIONS AT BEECH BEND RACEWAY PARK

BOWLING GREEN, KY – In the final results from Beech Bend Raceway Park and the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Troy Coughlin Jr., Delaware, Ohio, and Ray Drew, Hales Corners, Wis., took home the wins in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car respectively.

Coughlin Jr., worked his way through the field and ran 5.385 seconds at 269.13 mph in his final round victory over Robin Samsel, Marion, Ind., who clocked in at 9.665 seconds, 84.33 mph.

Drew faced off against Phil Esz, Amelia, Ohio, and posted a winning run of 5.748 seconds, 247.29 mph in his ’14 Mustang. Esz drove to a 10.133 second, 79.55 mph lap for his runner up finish.

Other racers visiting the winner’s circle this weekend were Craig Bourgeois, Materia, La., in Comp Eliminator; Tyler Bohannon, Louisville, Ky., in Super Stock; Todd Hoven, Milltown, N.J., in Stock Eliminator; Michael Shelton, New Carlisle, Ohio, in Super Comp; Jeremy Mason, Richmond, Ky., in Super Gas; and Louis Murray, Eureka, Mo., in Super Street. In the division’s Oakley Motorsports Top Sportsman series, it was Andy Horne, Delaware, Ohio, taking the win while Tim Paap, Charleston, Ill., won in the Oakley Motorsports Top Dragster series.

Mota doubles, Neff wins in Comp at Rocky Mountain Raceways

WEST VALLEY CITY, UT – Larry Mota, Orem, Utah, doubled up this weekend at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Double Header at Rocky Mountain Raceways winning both events in Sportsman Motorcycle and Clint Neff advanced to the final round in both events scoring the win in Sunday’s Comp Eliminator final.

Mota outran the field on Friday for the win then worked his way into the final again on Sunday to face off against Jason Clampitt, Lino Lakes, Minn. Clampitt was out first and looked to end Mota’s day but ran too quick and broke out to give Mota his second win of the weekend on his ’15 Kawasaki.

Neff, Arvada, Colo., was the runner up to Ralph Van Paepeghem on Friday then closed the deal on Sunday with a Comp Eliminator win over Don Bevers, Tucson, Ariz., Neff drove his ’32 roadster to a lap of 9.193 seconds, 101.97 mph after Bevers red lighted by just .001 seconds.

VICTORIES FOR COUGHLIN AND POMPONIO AT CECIL COUNTY DRAGWAY 

RISING SUN, Md – Troy Coughlin Jr., Delaware, Ohio, and Dan Pomponio, Berlin, N.J., raced to the wins in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car respectively at this weekend’s NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at Cecil County Dragway.

Coughlin, a winner earlier this year in Norwalk, Ohio, qualified his JEGS.com alcohol dragster in the number two spot then took out Thomas Fox and Dan Mercier in rounds one and two to set up the final round match up with No. 1 qualifier Doug Foley. Foley was out first by the smallest of margins but quickly had issues as Coughlin sped by posting a 5.359 second, 271.08 mph pass for the win.

“All credit to the guys at McPhillips Racing,” said Coughlin. “To come into this class as a rookie and get to work with a top organization like this is more than I could have ever asked for. Rich (McPhillips) and the rest of the crew work with so much passion for this sport.”

BATTLE AT THE BEECH AT BEECH BEND RACEWAY PARK

BOWLING GREEN, KY – Beech Bend Raceway Park host the final race in the Lucas Oil North Central division on August 24-26. The event is one of 44 scheduled across the country where drivers in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series earn points leading to divisional, regional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $519,000. Categories include Top Alcohol Dragster, Top Alcohol Funny Car, Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The division’s Oakley Motorsports Top Sportsman and Top Dragster Series will also run in conjunction with the event.

Saturday’s action will be highlighted by the Moser Sportsman Shootout that will pit racers from seven entirely different classes against each other in head to head competition with $15,000 up from grabs. The top points earners in seven classes, along with two wild card entries will make up the 16-car field. Round one is set for 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Qualifying and time trials are scheduled Friday at 9 a.m. and continue on Saturday at 8 a.m. Top Dragster, Top Sportsman and Comp Eliminator qualify Friday at 3 p.m. and Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car qualify Saturday at 1 and 5 p.m. Eliminations continue on Sunday at 10 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car’s first round of eliminations begin at noon.

DEMKE AND MARSHAL VICTORIOUS AT PACIFIC RACEWAYS

KENT, WA – In the final results from Pacific Raceways and the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Chris Demke, Tujunga, Calif., and Chris Marshall, McMinnville, Ore., took home the wins in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car respectively.

Number two and three in last year’s Top Alcohol Dragster standings went head to head in the final with Demke taking home the victory this year. Demke, worked his way through the field and ran 5.362 seconds at 274.72 mph in his final round victory over defending event champion Shawn Cowie, Surrey, B.C., who clocked in at 6.593 seconds, 147.37 mph.

Marshall faced off against 2017 Lucas Oil Top Alcohol Funny Car Champion, Shane Westerfield, Anaheim, Calif., and posted a winning run of 5.488 seconds, 268.71 mph in his ’17 Camaro. Westerfield drove to a 5.509 second, 268.28 mph lap for an impressive runner up finish.

WOMEN REIGN IN BRAINERD AT THE LUCAS OIL NATIONALS

BRAINERD, MN – Jackie Fricke and Annie Whiteley led the list of winners in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at Brainerd International Raceway and the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals followed by a slew of first time winners.

Fricke had her work cut out for her as Dean Dubbin was out first with a great .009 second reaction time in the Top Alcohol Dragster final round. But Fricke had the power all day running 5.20’s and 5.30’s with a 5.302 second pass at 269.24 in the final to power by Dubbin for the win and her third at the national event level.
Whiteley qualified number one and faced off with veteran Top Alcohol Funny Car pilot Jay Payne in the money round. Payne left first but had trouble at the hit of the throttle as Whiteley shot past with a 5.564, 267.37 mph lap for her second national event win of the season and sixth of her career.

Brian Johnson, Don Nichols, Jeff Crooks and Todd Fleck all grabbed their first NHRA National event win and famed Wally trophy. Johnson took the Super Stock title with a great 11.164 second run on the 11.16 dial to oust Jason DeForrest while Nichols lead from start to finish with a stellar .004 reaction time in Super Comp over Donald Leisdon.

CECIL COUNTY DRAGWAY HOST NHRA LUCAS OIL SERIES

RISING SUN, MD – NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Northeast division arrives at Cecil County Dragway for the Northeast Shootout on August 17-19. The event is one of 44 scheduled across the country where drivers in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series earn points leading to divisional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $519,000. Categories include Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The division’s MXI/Magnaflux Top Dragster and Top Sportsman Series’ presented by Select Performance will run in conjunction with the event along with the Ultimax Pro Stock Snowmobile

Gates at Cecil County Dragway open at 8 a.m. each day. Qualifying and time trials are Friday at 9 a.m. and Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Comp Eliminator qualify Friday at 2 and 6 p.m. and Saturday at 10:00 with eliminations beginning at 11:30. The Top Dragster and Top Sportsman qualify on Friday and Saturday morning with round one of eliminations on Saturday at 6 p.m. Eliminations for all classes continue Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Round two of Top Dragster and Top Sportsman will start at 11 a.m.

The division’s JBS Top Sportsman Series and RAD Top Dragster Series will also run in conjunction with the event along with Sportsman Motorcycle.

Gates at Pacific Raceways open at 7 a.m. Friday and Saturday, and Sunday at 8 a.m. Qualifying and time trials begin at 9:15 a.m. Friday and Saturday. LOCAL DRIVERS SCORE IN THE THUNDER AT THE LAKES

BRAINERD, MN. – The NHRA West Central division’s Lucas Oil Drag Series event, Thunder at the Lakes in Brainerd International Raceway, Brainerd, Minn., concluded Sunday evening. Minnesota racers Chris Bishop, Christopher Hess, Larry Wiebusch, Henry Wiebusch, and Jimmy Paulson rounded out winner’s circle with their teams.

Bishop of Grand Rapids took the starting line against Kevin Burnett, Parker, Colo., in the Super Comp final round. Burnett signaled the redlight, handing Bishop the victory. Bishop ran 8.879 seconds, 157.34 mph.

In the Super Gas championship round, Hess, hailing from Spicer went toe-to-to with Devin Isenhower, Lebanon, Ind. Hess got the win light running 9.916 seconds, 165.11 mph, as Isenhower broke out attempting to catch him,

Larry Wiebusch, of Anoka, had an easy route to victory in Super Street as his opponent Austin Siemers, Milaca, Minn., had mechanical issues and was not able to make to the starting line. Wiebusch ran 11.088 seconds, 107.29 mph. Wiesbusch was joined in winner’s circle by his uncle, Henry Wiebusch of Andover. Henry upended Ross Laris, Raceland, La., in the Fineline Graphics & Madcap Racing Top Dragster final round running 7.631 seconds, 136.84 mph as Laris turned on the red light.

Categories include Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The division’s Advance Product Design Top Sportsman, Fineline Graphics Madcap Racing Top Dragster and NHRA Sportsman Motorcycle Series are also in competition.
