Arguably, this has been a very odd race for us at DragStory.com. The teams, crews, fans, staff and overall race was exceptional. We continue to make strides with all aspects of the site and having the opportunity to add the live audio for the last 2 races has been a great bonus for our visibility!
It was different though. Perhaps it was unusual because this was our first time at The Rock. Or maybe it was different because it was our first DragStock experience. We cant seem to put our collective finger on the why, we just know we seemed a little distracted and just could not do coverage like we have over the last several events. It just might be we need to concentrate on the how and not the who
or is it the other way around?
To that end I am going to change up the way I write up my coverage for this event. Lets face reality, with all of the folks covering this series, many in real time, there is no way youll ever scoop somebody with the normal race happenings. Well before I ever have the opportunity to write a single word the who and how of the race will already have been sent around the world via live audio and real time reporting of the results through the great folks at Drag Race Central. To me this means my coverage becomes a perspective type of writing. So what does that mean? Well it just means Im going to tell you the story from how I saw it. Yes, Ill still include plenty of pictures and the results, just not going to rehash the facts as reported by other agencies. Ill let the chips fall where they may and look for feedback on how I did. Email me at info@dragstory.com
The drag race facility at Rockingham has always held a special allure to nearly every racer Ive ever spoken with. Theres just something about racing at Rockingham that has a special attraction to the racers and spectators alike. The fans are literally on top of the track with the way the seating is set up. I dont think the average race fan can get any closer to the racing action than they do at The Rock.
The track surface is smooth and tight. We saw a 206 MPH run by Chuck Ulsch driving Gil Mobleys extreme 10.5 Camaro. (Late breaking note
they just made a 3.92 @ 192 mph test run.
Jim Halsey tied the current Pro Nitrous ET record of 3.867 set by KA Balooshi in Martin Michigan and break his own MPH record with a 195.42 MPH blast.
Travis Davis would set a new Pro Extreme Motorcycle record with his 4.167 blast in the semi-finals.
The crowds were monstrous and set new records for attendance at any race ever held at Rockingham.
The fans where great! Not only friendly and open to being part of the show, they, ADRL fans, show a level of respect Ive rarely seen demonstrated at any large fan based gathering in my 36 plus years of involvement with drag racing.
When it was time for the invocation and singing of the national anthem, you could have easily heard a pin drop. This was not the first time I had observed this behavior, but noticed a consistent trend at all 7 of the ADRL events we have attended this year. I do not think you could ask for anymore from a group of people.
Saying competition was fierce would almost be an understatement. They had the quickest ever fields in Pro Extreme, Pro Nitrous and Pro Extreme Motorcycle. The bumps spots were 3.827 in PX, 3.999 (first all 3 second field in PN) in PN and 4.313 in the PXM category. The competitors pushed the envelope of their equipment and capabilities with numerous red lights and broken race cars/bikes as they battled for the top 8 spots and a shot at a world championship next months finals in Ennis TX.
At the end of the day, the champions where crowned and all celebrated another great DragStock at The Rock!
As my good friend Mike Bennett would say the tale of the tape for the champions goes like this
.
Jason Hamstra is back in Pro Extreme! After struggling for many races with their setup, they would card a 3.715 for low ET of the event and beat Ken Walshs 63 Corvette in the finals with a 3.761 @ 204.73 MPH to a losing 3.875 @ 196.04 MPH run.
Pro Extreme Ladder
click herePro Nitrous was the second all Team Al-Annabi final this season. Mike Castellan would repeat his St. Louis performance and take home another one of the prestigious National Guard Minuteman trophies when he beat fellow team mate Burton Auxier. Catsetllana would make an effortless 3.906 193.16 MPH run to a slowing 4.265 141.68 MPH pass of Auxier.
Pro Nitrous Ladder
click hereChuck Ulsch would not be denied his first victory in Extreme 10.5. After running the first 3 second pass in 10.5 history at St Louis hed lose to Bill Glidden in the finals. At Columbus hed run in the 3s again but lose to Spiro Pappas in the finals. At DragStock hed run in the 3s again and meet Gary White of team Titan in the finals. Ulsch would best White with a 4.028 @ 206.39 MPH blast to Whites slowing 4.215 158.43 MPH pass.
Extreme 10.5 Ladder
click hereOut of all the teams in the quest for the 3s in 10.5, I suspect the Titans will be the next inductee. With a stellar 4.009 #1 qualifying shot, they are on a mission. After struggling mid season, they are back and faster than ever. Keep an eye on the Scion!
The showmanship of Kenny Knowling would show out in the finals of Extreme Pro Stock. Knowling decided to add a little drama to the finals by having the racers swap lanes. After the burnout was complete and the cars sat at about the 300 foot mark, Knowling ran out on the track and stopped both cars and forced them to switch lanes as the backed up from the burn out. The spectators were stunned! When Brian Gahm lost to Steve Kirk you can only imagine what people were thinking. It wasnt until we entered into the winners circle that the cat was let out of the bag. The competitors had already decided to change lanes while sitting in staging. Instead of doing a normal swap like theyd do any place else, Kenny came up with a plan to do something different. It may have agitated the purists out there; however, I thought it was an interesting way to finish the category. Kirk would beat Gahm at both ends of the track. His .018 reaction time and 4.096 176.12 MPH run would take out the current points leader Gahms .037, 4.113 175.18 MPH effort.
