TorqStorm Superchargers NMRA/NMCA Power Festival – NMRA Results
Martin, MI – The TorqStorm Superchargers NMRA/NMCA Power Festival presented by Nitto Tire & Saturday Thrill Festival promised all-out racing, action, and activities as far as the eye could see, and by all accounts, it delivered.
The event held July 19-21, 2024 at US 131 Motorsports Park in Michigan, saw racers with gumption as well as grace under pressure giving it their all to arrive in the winner’s circle. They have proven, time after time, that they will put in the work that it takes to push to the winner’s circle despite the caliber of competition, and that is inspiring.
It is also appreciated by all of the fans who come to the events, including this one in the Great Lakes State, which also spotlighted Jurassic Attack Monster Truck car crushes, FMX Freestyle Motocross stunt shows, Tom Bailey’s Drag & Drive Invitational, TV personality Clarence Barnes and the Win Free Stuff NMRA/NMCA Fan Experience, UPR Products Car Show and a manufacturers’ midway.
While we are recapping the fifth event on the Holley NMRA Ford Nationals tour, a separate race wrap covers this fourth event on the Red Line Oil NMCA Muscle Car Nationals tour.
Racers in NMRA VP Racing Lubricants Renegade and NMCA Edelbrock Xtreme Street shared the stage and showed exactly what they are made of. Each of the 33 was capable of earning the win among the exceptional competition, and among them were Camren Massengale and Joel Greathouse. After five hard-fought rounds, they met in the sixth and final round of eliminations, where Massengale won when Greathouse ran into trouble and coasted down-track.
Charlie Booze Jr., who came to this race with the lead in points in Vengeance Clutch Coyote Stock, was off to a solid start by setting the pace in qualifying with a 9.73. Several of his fellow racers, however, were right on his heels. Among them was Ed Bennett, who was holding down second place in points. When the longtime drivers drove into the final round of eliminations, they were close on the tree, but on the top end of the track, Booze Jr. blasted to a 9.72 to defeat Bennett, who beelined to a 9.76.
Many racers in Richmond Gear Factory Stock, and other categories, placed “Ridin’ With Mike” stickers on their cars in support of fellow Richmond Gear Factory Stock racer and points leader Mike Bowen, who was recently diagnosed with cancer and missed this race to begin treatment. Among those racers was his friend, Damien Stephens, who travels down from Canada to compete in the category, and clocked a record-setting 9.9023 to set the pace in qualifying in his wheel-standing Mustang. Stephens, who came to this race second in points, was on a roll all weekend and made it to the final round of eliminations, where he earned his first NMRA win with a 9.94 over the fiercely competitive Justin Fogelsonger, who left the line just a little too quickly and illuminated the red light. Stephens went on to dedicate his win to Bowen, who was watching the race from home.
Michael Hall was dialed in as he drove to an 8.6014 to lead qualifying in SunCoast Performance 8.60 Street Race, but Gavin Black, who is having a stellar season, and Logan Day, who is also quite successful, lined up for the final round of eliminations. Black got off the starting line first and won with an 8.73 while Day dipped under the 8.60 index with an 8.52.
Almost all of the racers in Whatever It Takes Transmissions Parts Street Bandit 10.10 ran commendably close to that index in qualifying, including James Meredith, who motored to a 10.1028 to lead qualifying in the new category. Making it to the final round of eliminations, however, were Cary Shotwell and Bill Wittenauer. Shotwell, from a family of fine racers, went to the Winner’s Circle after Wittenauer went -0.012 red.
Bob Dill was as focused as he could be on the tree, recording a perfect .000 to lead qualifying in Fastest Street Car Truck & SUV, but the final round of eliminations featured multi-time champion Randy Conway and Tim Jacobsen. Conway, racing in his home state, dialed a 10.37 while Jacobsen dialed a 12.49. Conway collected the win in the double-breakout race with a 10.31 to Jacobsen’s 12.38.
As always, ARP Open Comp saw a sizable field of racers who dialed their combinations in with precision. Randy Crowley and Gordon Harlow made it to the sixth and final round of eliminations, where both racers recorded a red light. Crowley dialed in at 8.65, won as Harlow, dialed in at 10.07, left the line first, and illuminated the red light first.
Charlie McCulloch, riding high in Exedy Racing Clutch Modular Muscle points, proved he wanted to stay there by leading qualifying with a .001 reaction time and racing to the final round of eliminations. He faced equally steady competitor Shane Williams, and McCulloch got the win when Williams went after the tree but unfortunately turned on the red light to the tune of -.0001.
Mike Moistner entered this event focused on moving toward the top in points in HP Tuners Super Stang, and he certainly succeeded. He made it to the final round of eliminations, where he met Andy Ransford. Moistner motored to the Winner’s Circle with an 11.73 on an 11.63 dial to Ransford’s 13.38 on a 13.30 dial.
Mark Schiffner and Bryan Parker met in the fifth and final round of eliminations in CJ Pony Parts Ford Muscle, where Schiffner secured the win with a 10.58 on his 10.50 dial over Parker, who broke out slightly with a 10.48 on his 10.50 dial.
NMRA and NMCA Circle D Specialties True Street joined forces for a 30-mile cruise on the scenic roads around US 131 Motorsports Park before returning to make three back-to-back passes down-track. Dan Sharp secured the overall win with a 7.71 average, while Tyler Baber took the runner-up with a 7.73 average in his Mustang. Other racers deserving recognition are Scott Oshinski (9-second winner), John Cole (10-second winner), Kevin McCotter (11-second winner), Mark Mentink (12-second winner), Bob Huyser (13-second winner), Adam Retford (14-second winner) and Mary Walters (15-second winner).
Bracket Open was also in the mix at this event. Trista Scholten defeated Brent Wheeler with a 6.49 on her 6.48 dial after Wheeler broke out with a 5.99 on a 6.00 dial.
The Holley NMRA Ford Nationals offers sincere congratulations to the winners, and a heartfelt thank-you to race fans and sponsors for their support.
