Past E-town Champ Coughlin Positioned for more Pro Mod Glory!

Courtesy of Jegs

ENGLISHTOWN, NJ – No matter how many times a drag racer wins, they seem to have an uncanny ability to remember every minute detail of each conquest. That’s certainly the case with Pro Mod driver Troy Coughlin, who revels in the memories of his 2005 triumph at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.

“It was Father’s Day and my dad Jeg Sr., son T.J., and daughter Meghan were here with me, so pulling off that win under those circumstances was pretty darn special,” Coughlin said. “It was also my first win in a Pro Mod car, which added another dimension to the celebration. Overall, it was probably the most satisfying single day of racing I’ve ever had, and I’ll never forget it.”

With a Wally trophy on the line this time through, Coughlin returns to Old Bridge as part of the NHRA Pro Mod Series presented by ProCare Rx, which will be running at this weekend’s 43rd annual Toyota NHRA SuperNationals.

“Pro Mods haven’t raced in five weeks so I’m sure everyone did the same thing we did, which was go home and get their racecars serviced and ready for the summer months,” Coughlin said. “Although it’s not supposed to be too hot this weekend, we went and tested in Atlanta to get a good baseline tune-up for the summer months. It was really hot there and our car responded well, relative to the conditions.

BangShift and J-Angel Productions Team Up To Deliver This Weekend’s Chevy High Performance Nationals!

Written by Brian Lohnes

Commerce, GA – BangShift and Mark Walter of J-Angel Productions have joined forces to deliver live, free, streaming coverage of this weekend’s Chevy High Performance Nationals to be run at Atlanta Dragway, in Commerce, Georgia on BangShift.com. The event will feature a host of different drag racing classes from wild x275 cars to Pro Modified as well as the hotly contested Chevy Performance LSx Challenge Series. The five classes that make up the Chevy Performance LSx Challenge will be broadcast live and free for the first time ever, giving the world a close look at just how hard these LS-equipped racers are running.

The three day event includes a test and tune day on Friday and a full slate of heads up ad bracket racing on Saturday and Sunday. We’re hoping to see some of the quickest Chevy powered x275 cars in the country. The radial class is blowing up from coast to coast with racers running deep into the four second range while dangling their front tires for the full length of the (typically) eighth mile race. Pro Modifieds will have three qualifying sessions on Saturday and their elimination rounds, along with all other classes will be held on Sunday.

Coughlin ready to take his swings at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park

Courtesy of Jegs

ENGLISHTOWN, NJ – Drag Racing champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. grew up in the suburbs of Columbus, Ohio, and was fortunate enough to learn the game of golf at Muirfield Golf Club, the site of this weekend’s Memorial PGA Tournament. In fact, his father Jeg Coughlin Sr. went to high school with none other than tournament host and golfing legend Jack Nicklaus, a longtime friend of the Coughlin family.

Although golf and drag racing are two drastically different sports, Jeg Jr. says the lessons he learned on the links at Muirfield apply very well to his career behind the wheel of his 1,400-horsepower JEGS.com/Mopar Dodge Avenger, which he’ll wheel into this weekend’s 43rd annual Toyota NHRA SuperNationals at historic Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.

“You have to be patient in both sports,” Coughlin said. “You want to hit that 300-yard drive every time, just kill it, but maybe that’s not the best move. Same with drag racing; you want to set a world record every pass but some times it’s a better idea to just get the car down the racetrack and take the win light.

Severance, Gasparrelli lead Mission wire to wire

Written by Todd Veney/Pro Sportsman Association

Mission, BC – Joey Severance dominated Top Alcohol Dragster at the LORDCO Auto Parts BC Nationals, the Western Regional event at Mission Raceway, qualifying No. 1 and setting low e.t. of all three rounds en route to victory, and defending division champ Steve Gasparrelli did likewise in Top Alcohol Funny Car.

Severance was the only driver in the 5.30s and the only one to crack to 270 mph in qualifying with a best of 5.35, 270.86, half a tenth ahead of eventual runner-up Ray Martin’s 5.40. He established low e.t. of the meet on his first-round single with a 5.33.

Martin ran a competitive 5.44 in the opening round to take out Greg Sereda’s 5.58, and Canadian Gord Gingles dipped into the 5.30s with a career-best 5.39 in a win over quick-leaving Greg Hunter. Gingles fouled away a 5.41 in the semi’s opposite Severance’s 5.369, and Martin moved to within striking distance of Severance with a 5.372 on his semifinal single.

Many-time world champions Bill Reichert and Frank Manzo won the Eastern regional event at Maple Grove Raceway, each for the fourth time in five years. Reichert edged reigning event and world champ Duane Shields in a photo-finish final in Top Alcohol Dragster, 5.452 to 5.457, and Manzo stopped old rival Paul Gill in a trouble-plagued Top Alcohol Funny Car final, 5.83 to 6.07.

Reichert, who also won this race in 2008, 2009, and 2010, edged Shields in perhaps the best round of any race in any class all year. Shields moved first by a thousandth of a second, .050 to .051, and Reichert was quicker by five-thousandths, 5.452 to 5.457, for a four-thousandths margin of victory.

Reichert qualified just sixth in the field and drew the hottest driver in the country,Topekawinner Rich McPhillips, in the first round but advanced with a 5.49 when McPhillips launched into a wheelstand, smoked the tires upon his return to earth, and shut off. In the semifinals, Reichert took out former Division 1 champ John Finke, 5.42 to 5.57.
