JEGS PM Camaro Ready for the the Next Step in Houston

HOUSTON, TX – The evolution of Troy Coughlin’s JEGS.com Chevrolet Camaro Pro Mod continues this weekend at Royal Purple Raceway with the NHRA Spring Nationals.

Coughlin and his team, led by decorated crew chief Steve Petty, continue to develop the relatively new turbocharged ’68 Camaro. Pro Mod cars are a notoriously fickle lot, so getting them to go down the track in a fast, consistent basis is an arduous task that takes some time.

A past world champion in the NMCA, Coughlin has shown improvement with his new car, as tuner Petty works to improve the setup. The two have had only two races together, and Coughlin has qualified in the top half of the field in the NHRA Pro Mod Series presented by ProCare Rx at both Gainesville and Charlotte.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – For more than 50 years, the North Central Division of the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series raced at historic Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis and throughout the years, the JEGS Mail Order team has enjoyed it’s fair share of success at the venerable old drag strip.

This weekend, Team JEGS drivers Mike, Troy Jr. and Samantha Coughlin will return to Lucas Oil Raceway in search of more glory at the traditional North Central Division season-opening tilt. Mike will be seeking to defend his title in the Top Sportsman class, while Samantha and Troy Jr. will do battle in the highly competitive Super Comp category. Mike Knowles’ Blown Money Team Hoping for a Better Outing at NHRA O’Reilly Auto Parts Spring Nationals

Grand Junction, CO – Mike Knowles and his Blown Money team have found some consistency early this season but need a little good luck to move to the next level. Heading into the O’Reilly Auto Parts Spring Nationals Knowles sits sixth in NHRA Pro Modified points and if not for some bad luck at the previous race in Charlotte the team could be a few rungs higher on the points ladder.

“After our first round win at ZMax we performed our regular maintenance but we didn’t start the engine until our routine warm up prior to our second round match up with Brad Brand. When we tried to fire the car the starter swung over free, like it wasn’t turning anything.

We thought it wasn’t engaging or the starter was bad but found out that the flex plate bolts sheared off. With no time to go through the rest of our pre race routine we quickly pulled the transmission and replaced the bolts with just enough time to get to the starting line. Mike was a little off on his reaction time and we didn’t have the right tune up in her; we just knew we needed to get up there for the points and hope for the best,” said Car Chief Bill Rice.

T.J. Coughlin scores $20,000 payday in South Georgia

Courtesy of Jegs

ADEL, Ga. (April 23) – Third generation drag racer Troy Coughlin Jr. scored one of the biggest victories of his career when he banked $20,000 Sunday at the Super Spring Buck Blast at South Georgia Motorsports Park.

Racing his JEGS.com-branded dragster, Coughlin won the main event. The victory was extra special for Coughlin as he defeated his friend, mentor and JEGS.com teammate, Kenny Underwood, in the final round.

“Winning any race is great but to be able to race Kenny in the final makes it even better,” Coughlin said. “He’s one of the best racers in the country and it’s an honor just to line up against him. We raced each other for the first time last year and I was lucky enough to beat him. I told him he owed me one. Now, he owes me two and I’m sure it’s just a matter of time before he evens the score.

“This was a great race and we really enjoyed coming down here. [Track operator] Rowland Wood and his staff should be very proud of this event. It was awesome.”

HOUSTON, TX – Royal Purple Raceway and the NHRA Spring Nationals will always have a special place in the memory of four-time Pro Stock champion Jeg Coughlin Jr., driver of the JEGS.com/Mopar Dodge Avenger.

The southeast Texas track is the site of some important milestone victories in Coughlin’s career, and if things work out, there could me more memorable wins coming at the April 27-29 event.

“Houston will always bring fond memories to me; it was the site of my first Super Stock win in 1994 and my first Pro Stock win in 1997,” Coughlin said. “There is something about the track and the environment there that have always yielded favorable results for me and our teams. I love the place.”

Coughlin said the atmosphere the Angel family has created at Royal Purple Raceway over the years is a big factor in the comfort level he enjoys at the facility.

New engine, new look for the Bauer Racing Pontiac GTO

Courtesy of Quick 32

ELMA, NY – The Pontiac GTO Top Sportsman car of Bob Bauer Jr will not only be sporting a new look this year, the car will be powered with a new and larger engine in the Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts for 2012.

The driver of the Bauer Racing GTO said along with a new paint scheme for his car and the team’s Junior Dragster driven by son Robert Bauer III, a 738-cubic inch engine is being fitted into the Torrelli Pro Cars chassis.

“The Quick 32 Series is getting quicker and quicker, and we wanted to qualify better in the fields this year,” he noted. “This engine will have nitrous. I’d like to qualify without the nitrous, but if I need it I’ve got it.”

The team placed eighth in the Championship Point Award Series in 2011, and the season was highlighted with an event win over the Top Dragster of Billy White in the final at the Nitro Nationals at Cayuga.

And while the team qualified for each of the six events last year, Bauer said the new engine should allow them to qualify higher for the races.

The engine has been freshened up by Mike Janis of Jan-Cen Racing Engines and features a Speedtech nitrous system with a pair of Bob Book Split Dominator carburetors. An R&R Racing two-speed Powerglide transmits the power with a BDR torque converter.

Mr. Aruba Winter Nationals collect more than $5K for JEGS Foundation

Courtesy of Jegs

DELAWARE, OH – The Mr. Aruba Winter Nationals is not your normal drag racing event.

Sure, races are won and lost, but the real reason for the gathering is to raise money for cancer research. This year, the “competition” between old drag-racing friends produced more than $5,000 for the JEGS Foundation Racing For Cancer Research project, the longtime benefactor of the Mr. Aruba Winter Nationals.

The Mr. Aruba Winter Nationals, hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Aruba (aka Mike DeChicco and Jane Graebner), brought together old friends and new racers to “Mr. Aruba’s Dodgeland.” This year, $5,208 was donated through the JEGS Foundation to the James Cancer Hospital at Ohio State University and the Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus.

NHRA star Jeg Coughlin Jr. accepted the donation on behalf of the JEGS Foundation.
