U.S. 131 Motorsports Park celebrates 50 years at Nitro Jam

MARTIN, MI – In the spring of 1962 Martin Dragway opened to the fanfare of the western Michigan motorsports community.

Providing a world-class quarter-mile drag racing facility located between Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo, Martin Dragway was a welcomed addition to the roster of great tracks in the motorsports-rich state.

For decades Martin Dragway hosted some of the biggest names in drag racing’s rich history, from Rickie Smith and Shirley Muldowney to Bob Glidden, Don Garlits, John Force, Don Prudhomme and many more, on its way to becoming one of the premier racing facilities in the county. In 1986 the track, located in the small town of Martin, Mich., hosted its first IHRA national event with a one-off race and went on to become one of the most anticipated races on the schedule when it was added to the lineup fulltime in 2002.

Maddern Racing prepares for multiple missions in Seattle

Courtesy of Maddern Racing

Seattle, WA  – The Maddern Racing team is in Seattle looking to find a glitch, scratch an itch, and do it in a stitch. In their last two outings, an electrical problem has been a troubling annoyance. Luck has played a part of the Peen Rite / OSI / 801 Racing Team’s success.  Having won Sonoma and going to the finals at Woodburn has made the championship itch grow bigger.  Before they can think of anything else, the Peen Rite Team has to find the electrical issue.

“Before the race we field striped the electrical system looking for the gremlin from the last two races,” said tuner/clutch guy Adam Rhoades. “We are planning on testing during qualifying and racing on Sunday. We will see if we can put our finger on the problem. There will be some great competition here in Seattle. It makes us better and that makes us have to perform. We know how this car can run. We are here to win.”

Pacific Raceways has been favorable to the Maddern Racing Team in the past two years. A 2010 win and a 2011 semi-final appearance is a good omen. For 2012, the sense of urgency is quite clear. The championship points battle is front and center this weekend in Seattle. Crew Chief Jerry Maddern, Kevin Watson, Mike Demke, Ronald Mann, and tuner/clutch guy Adam Rhoades know what’s at stake, and are prepared for battle.

KENT, WA – After a month off of the race track, Greg Hunter and the ExactAir Top Alcohol Dragster team are refreshed and returning to quarter-mile competition at this weekend’s Northwest Nationals. The northwest native is hoping to keep his national event first round win streak going while trying to go deeper into eliminations.

“Though the entry list is short, it’s still a strong field. Most, if not all of the cars are capable of running 5.3s. We need to step up to that 5.3 range if we want to win races. We were right on the edge of it at Chicago, but a couple parts failures prevented us from running better,” said Hunter.

Greg’s last race was the Route 66 Nationals in Chicago. He qualified 10th with a 5.46 at 263 mph, out-qualifying multiple past national and divisional champions. His .031 light first round helped him earn the win over Dan Page. Second round saw him get the holeshot again, but eventual race winner Jim Whiteley was able to drive around him. Hunter believes the Kenny Gilmour owned and tuned ExactAir car will be throwing down solid runs inSeattle.

Davis Plans ADRL Turnaround for Dragstock

Written by Ian Tocher

SUWANEE, GA — Don’t count Top Sportsman veteran Ronnie Davis out yet. The five-time IHRA Top Sportsman world champion and two-time NHRA Division 2 champ may have struggled somewhat through the first half of the ADRL schedule and hasn’t made an NHRA Division 2 appearance since March, but “The King,” as many know him, has regained his trademark confidence and swagger.

“I won’t ever quit something I started,” he declares. “That just won’t happen.”

The Suwanee, Georgia-based golf cart dealer is hoping to build on some recent success, too, and turn his ADRL season around this weekend (Aug. 3-4), in Dragstock IX at zMAX Dragway, near Charlotte.

Davis qualified his nitrous-boosted, 822-cubic-inch, Roush Yates-powered ’63 Corvette in the number-one position for the inaugural Mean 16 Outlaw Top Sportsman Shootout last month at Douglas Motorsports Park in south-central Georgia. He went on to reach the final round before the race was cut short by late-night dew settling on the racing surface.
