No Changes for Derek Hawker, ready for PMRA season

CORBYVILLE, ON – Derek Hawker, who placed third in the 2012 Pro Modified Racing Association standings, said he has no big changes in store for the upcoming season.

We have just been doing our regular thing, said Hawker, who drives the Hawker Racing 1963 Chevy Corvette Pro Modified. We have got the car tuned up and we are ready.

Hawker qualified the Corvette at all PMRA races last year, and his best showing was a runner-up finish against Sam Andreacchi in the final at Grand Bend in August. The Vanishing Points Race Car chassis is powered by an Alan Johnson 526-cubic inch engine with a PSI D-Screw supercharger and Atchison fuel system which propels the car down the quarter-mile in just over six seconds at about 230 mph. A Lenco three-speed transmission sits behind the engine.

Hunter Continues Quest for Victory in Vegas

LAS VEGAS, NV – Despite a first round loss at the NHRA Lucas Oil Series regional event at The Strip last weekend, Greg Hunter and the G Hunter David Smith photoExactAir Compliance Systems Top Alcohol Dragster team will power through to the SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals this weekend, April 4-7. The Canadian group’s goal remains the same – steadily improve their performance at every race. Their showing at the regional event wasn’t horrible – Hunter qualified 6th and lost first round, 5.53 to 5.60 – but it wasn’t what Hunter and his Kenny Gilmour Motorsports team were looking for.

“We were pretty happy with our first run out of the box, 5.463 at 264 MPH. We worked on tuning it up and making it go faster but it didn’t quite go how we thought it would. It broke a lifter on the last qualifier and hurt a camshaft so we changed that motor going into first round. We set it up to run close to the 5.46 again but it just went weak. We found a couple issues in the motor during the week between races so we’re confident that performance will be back up to where we feel it should be. I hope to be back in the five-thirties at the national event,” Greg claimed.

Demke, Peen Rite TAD Running Clean and Mean in Vegas

LAS VEGAS, NV – Top Alcohol Dragster driver Chris Demke enters this weekend’s SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals with continued Chris Demke TADoptimism. His Jerry Maddern-led Peen Rite/OSI/801 Racing team used last weekend’s NHRA LODRS regional race as a test event following a rough Phoenix regional race. Though it might not look like it from the outside, it was a successful outing for the California team.

“We would have rather won the race than lost first round, but we went out there more to test than to race. One of our goals was to not hurt any parts. We made one run in testing, three runs in qualifying, and first round of eliminations without hurting parts, so from that perspective it was a success. Now we’ll be back at the national event and hopefully we can get a little more aggressive with the tune-up. Of course the goal is still to not hurt any parts, but the other goal is always to win,” Demke said.

Jim, Annie Whiteley Dominate Vegas Regional

Written by Todd Veney

Las Vegas, NV – For the second year in a row, Jim and Annie Whiteley’s YNot Racing team swept the Las Vegas spring Regional, Jim in LODRSTop Alcohol Dragster and wife Annie in Top Alcohol Funny Car. Jim led the dragster contingent from wire to wire, setting low e.t. of all three qualifying sessions and two of three rounds of eliminations, and Annie came from the No. 2 spot to defeat Doug Gordon in the Top Alcohol Funny Car final with low e.t. of the event, 5.59.

Jim, who beat Chris Demke last season in a final that had to be rerun after something blew through the lights in Demke’s lane as they approached the finish line the first time, was a winner before he passed the Tree this time on Don St. Arnaud’s foul start. “I saw the red-light before my green came on,” Whiteley said. “It can mess you up sometimes, but I didn’t mind because we weren’t running as good as we did here last year.”
