KALITTA TAKES POLE FOR NHRA COUNTDOWN OPENER IN CHARLOTTE

TORRANCE, CA – Doug Kalitta drove his Mac Tools Toyota dragster to a 3.721-second pass to earn the Top Fuel doug-kalitta-2016-zmax-saturdaypole position for Sunday’s NHRA Carolina Nationals at the zMAX Dragway in Charlotte, North Carolina, in the opening round of the Countdown to the Championship playoffs.

The pole is the fourth of the season for Kalitta, who entered the Countdown as the number two seed. He will be looking for his fourth win of the season on Sunday.

“Proud of the entire Mac Tools team,” said Kalitta. “Four clean passes in varying conditions is a great way to start this Countdown push. Great crowd here today at zMAX Dragway and I am excited to have my first number one qualifier here in Charlotte. This is a great facility and I am excited to race here tomorrow.”

All five Toyota Top Fuel drivers qualified in the top half of the field as Shawn Langdon placed fifth, J.R. Todd was sixth, Antron Brown seventh and Richie Crampton qualified in the eighth spot. Toyota drivers led three of the weekend’s four qualifying sessions with Crampton, Kalitta and Brown each topping one session. Overall, Kalitta earned six bonus points for the weekend.

Alexis DeJoria qualified fourth with a 3.887 second pass to lead the Camry Funny Car contingent. She registered four consecutive passes of 3.965 seconds or better in her Tequila Patron Camry. Cruz Pedregon qualified 10th, Chad Head was 11th and Del Worsham placed 12th.

Both DeJoria and Worsham have qualified for the playoffs.
