Houde tunes Burbage to a $20,000 SCSN Pro Street victory

Courtesy of LHP Racing

Buzzards Bay, MA Tuning consultant Lonnie Houde with LHP Racing had one of his best weekends at the race track this past weekend as he helped get Rod Burbage, owner of Spec Rite Torque Converters, secure the biggest win of his racing career.

This was the first year Burbage had been to the Street Car Super Nationals event since changing his whole engine combination 3 years ago and he wasn’t coming to have fun, he was dead set on winning. The 2-time West Coast Outlaw Pro Mod Association champ strung together four (4) 6-teen passes during qualifying with the best being a 6.15 placing him 6th in the 32 car qualified ladder.

During the first round of eliminations on Sunday, Houde and Burbage set a new personal low ET for their weekend with a 6.13 round win over Garrett Richards. After the first round of all “heads up” classes it was decided to switch the entire event to 1/8th-mile due to strong wind gusts and cold temperatures which put up safety concerns for the track and event officials.

Lonnie Houde has experience of tuning screw blown engines on the 1/8th-mile after working for many ADRL Pro Extreme teams, but it would be a new game for Burbage who only has ran 1/4-mile events. Rod knew he had to be on his game on the tree and he stepped it up. In the second round he got a win over Shawn Jones with a soft 4.10.

Who will win SCSN Pro Street, East or West?

2009 Pacific Street Car Association (PSCA) Champion Randy Walker

By Deborah-WFO

Who will take the win at the Street Car Super Nationals this Year? Will the West finally earn a Pro Street Victory? Will the East continue as the unprecedented champions of the top class and yet again steal the $20,000 purse? No doubt, some heavy hitters and fast rides are coming armed and ready to roll the dice at the Las Vegas Strip, November 19-22, 2009. A quick scope of the contenders list indicates fierce competition in what will be an all out brutal battle of East versus West, Champion versus Champion, Pro Mod versus Pro Street Shootout. All bets are on.

Top of the list is SCSN IV Pro Street winner Kirk Wilmes of Altus Oklahoma in his G-Force Blown Firebird. Last year Wilmes showed up and seemingly ran a flawless string of very consistent passes in the six second- teens range. Wicked consistency and fast times made Wilmes untouchable. Wilmes and the rest of the class though will have to contend with Coby Rabon of Ridgeway South Carolina who just made a clean sweep at the Orlando World Street Nationals with his BBC Twin Turbo Mustang. Rabon was the number one qualifier, low ET holder, and the WSN Champion all in the same event. Rabon’s career best is 6.03 @ 245 mph.

Street Car Super Nationals, Behind the Scenes

By Deborah-WFO, Bluebaugh Racing

The Street Car Super Nationals (SCSN) has undoubtedly become the West Coast’s premier drag racing event with MelRothseemingly overnight success. Now in its 5th year, SCSN V is set to run November 19-22, 2009 at “The Strip” at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The event will draw a who’s who of top names and the fastest cars from the U.S, Puerto Rico and Canada, but who created it and why?

I got a chance to catch up with race promoter Mel Roth recently in Las Vegas, who is the man behind the scenes and creator of the now famed and prestigious SCSN. Roth started out years ago like many racers tired of promising racing associations that did not last.

With necessity or in this case need to race being the mother of invention, Roth took action. In 1999, he created the Pacific Street Car Association (PSCA), which proved to be the West Coast’s first stable and long lasting street car racing association now in its eleventh year.
