A Unique SCSN For Unique Times Kicks Off Thursday in Vegas

LAS VEGAS—In a year of uncertainty, Mel Roth made it a mission to ensure his annual marathon of drag racing returned to The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Thanks to that mission and the fans, racers, and businesses that have stood by Roth and the Premier Street Car Association in 2020, the COMP Cams Street Car Super Nationals 16 Presented by FuelTech kicks off Thursday as originally scheduled.

The COVID-19 pandemic that has changed America’s way of life since March will still have an effect on the event. Spectator tickets will not be sold at the track as has been customary in years past. This year, tickets are only available for purchase online. Tickets can be purchased by clicking HERE. Racer and crew passes can be purchased at the credential booth located to the left of the drag strip entrance as has been customary in the past.

In an open letter to fans, racers, and media earlier this week, Roth explained that while this year’s race may have a different feel, everything is being done to still provide an incredible experience.

SCSN-15 EVENT RESULTS

LAS VEGAS—Aaron Wells from Oklahoma City, Okla., earned the Precision Turbo Pro Mod victory with his ’67 Shelby at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in the finals of the COMP Cams Street Car Super Nationals 15 Presented by FuelTech. The No. 5 qualifier beat Randy Merick with an incredible lap of 5.522 seconds at 266.42 mph over Merick’s 6.005 seconds at 181.54.

Justin Jones, the class top qualifier with a supercharger track record 5.518-second lap, went out in E2 after a red light & centerline-crossing wheelstand put him on the truck early.

“We knew we had a good race car, we were just chipping away at it,” Wells said with a huge smile from the Winner’s Circle. “It’s the first time in the quarter mile for us in this car and I knew we needed to take it one step at a time and keep working on it. If I just had another pass, we’d turn it up a little more. It’s been a good time. I always say you can’t win from No. 1, so it didn’t scare me not to be No. 1 qualifier.

SCSN 15 To Race 4-Wide?

LAS VEGAS – The COMP Cams Street Car Super Nationals 15 Presented by FuelTech is a four-day marathon with a legacy of record-shattering runs, dominating performances by the greatest in the world, and stunning upsets. This year, in addition to the inclusion of Radial vs. The World class, the SCSN 4-Wide exhibition returns after a wildly-successful run during the 2018 event.

The bucket-list race is Nov. 21-24 at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, with the drag racing world awaiting the return of the 4-Wide(ish) SCSN. The plan, developed by SCSN Promoter and Premier Street Car Association President Mel Roth, creates one pair of lanes for Radial Tire classes and the other for Slick Tire classes. The event was one of the most memorable of last year’s race here, with both the drivers involved and those watching demanding it be brought back for a second year. Last November, the 14th edition of the Street Car Super Nationals utilized all four lanes of the facility’s unique layout in order to provide an all-new experience that also expedited the racing from class to class.

The plan, spearheaded by SCSN Promoter Mel Roth and Director of Racing Operations for The Strip Jeff Foster, calls for standard slick tire classes to be run on the west track with radial tire classes on the east track. The lanes will be used in an alternating format, eliminating the need to slow the program in order to prep for the upcoming class. In addition, prep specialist Kurt Johnson returns to assist again this year.

HISTORICAL SCSN-14 WRAP-UP

LAS VEGAS – The much-hyped 4-Wide With A Twist proved to live up to expectations, providing some of the best racing in the history of the event thanks to Jeff Foster and the entire LVMS Staff! Whether it was the ability to move quickly between radial tire and slick tire racing thanks to the extra two lanes, or the history-making 4-Wide $10K to win grudge match, it created a new level for the legendary drag race.

Rick Hord won the annual Pro Mod Shootout exhibition race. He earned top qualifier honors with ease. Winning the class finals of the 14th running of the Nitrous Outlet Street Car Super Nationals Presented by FuelTech seemed a foregone conclusion. However, things at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway rarely go as forecasted this time of year as Ed Thornton, who qualified second in Precision Turbo Pro Mod, took the victory in a solo pass.

Hord, who had a bye run in the semifinals, had suffered engine damage and was only able to stage and break the starting line beams to advance to the finals. The Florida native was unable to answer the call to the finals, effectively handing the victory to Thornton, who provided the fans with a show by rocketing to the win with a lap of 5.543 seconds at 274.61 mph. Hord was the polesitter thanks to an official pass of 5.587 seconds despite laying down a 5.52 during his Pro Mod Shootout run. Thornton had the fastest car on the property by a lot, his qualifying speed a 270 mph pass.

Four Lanes, Two Tracks, One Incredible Street Car Super Nationals Nov. 15-18

LAS VEGAS – It’s the event designed to test the heartiest of racer. Drag racing is a sprint. The Nitrous Outlet Street Car Super Nationals 14 Presented by FuelTech is a four-day marathon with a legacy of record-shattering runs, dominating performances by the greatest in the world, and stunning upsets.

The bucket-list race is less than a month away, Nov. 15-18 at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, with the drag racing world eagerly awaiting the first-ever 4-Wide(ish) SCSN. The plan, developed by SCSN Promoter and Premier Street Car Association President Mel Roth, creates one pair of lanes for Radial Tire classes and the other for Slick Tire classes. After sellout NHRA crowds arrived at The Strip earlier this year for its debut of 4-Wide West, Roth knew he had to find a way to utilize both lanes for his signature event.

“First, let me say, the only way this works is because of Jeff Foster’s amazing crew and Kurt Johnson’s talent as a track prepper! By using both sets of lanes, we can finish a Radial Tire class and then immediately start the next Slick Tire class. This makes a huge difference when it comes to down time on the race track. Now, instead of waiting for more racing while track prep is going on, we can prep the track and not interrupt the action.

SCSN To Race 4-Wide With A Twist

LAS VEGAS — Two straight days this spring, sold-out crowds packed The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the NHRA’s foray into 4-Wide racing on the West Coast. In November, the 14th edition of the Nitrous Outlet Street Car Super Nationals Presented by FuelTech will utilize all four lanes of the facility’s unique layout in order to provide an all-new experience that also expedites the racing from class to class.

In addition, prep specialist Kurt Johnson has been hired by the track to assist in this massive undertaking.

“This is the biggest project we’ve undertaken for the Street Car Super Nationals,” said Roth. “The racing is going to flow a lot better with less down time due to track prep. And this is a team that can do it. We’ve got a track crew that is already one of the best in the world and now, they’re going to be working even harder with less time between prep since we’re running essentially two different drag strips.

“If you’ve never been to this race, this should be what gets you out here because it’s going to be incredible!”

SCSN 13 THE WINNERS ARE……

LAS VEGAS – Mike Bowman came full circle at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, earning his second-straight Precision Turbo Pro Mod victory at the Nitrous Outlet Street Car Super Nationals 13 Presented by Speed Society in a span that also saw him earn the win at the Drag Illustrated World Series of Pro Mod earlier this year.

Tom Bailey in the SKRC Blown Olds 442 all the way from Orion, Mich. earned the class #1 qualifier with an ET of 5.750 seconds, but Bowman’s speed of 270 mph flat was an incredible benchmark that wouldn’t be topped in Pro Mod. Bowman defeated Carl Stevens in the finals with a 5.789 at 260.91 mph over Stevens’ 5.876 at 224.62 mph. The Oak Hill, Calif. resident earned the victory in the same ’69 Chevelle he won with here last year.

Sonny’s Power Scored Street Car Super Nationals Victory for Steve Nicholson

LYNCHBURG, VA – Vancouver-based 10.5 driver Steve Nicholson is as passionate about racing as they come. His willingness to travel long distances just to race and his competitive drive to be successful are evidenced in the way he runs his program. So it’s no surprise that before making the switch to Sonny’s Racing Engines, Nicholson did his research. He talked with other racers and professionals for over a year before deciding that Sonny’s was the way to go.

His first race out with his new Sonny’s 959 EFI engine was the Las Vegas Street Car Super Nationals. “We tested it a little bit and then picked at it slowly,” Nicholson said of the engine. “It came around every round to our advantage. It was our first ever weekend where everything was flawless. We didn’t have anything go wrong. The motor stood up to everything and everything else worked great. It just went on repeat and that was nice. We made 12 hits on the car. It just kept getting faster and faster. Everything we asked it to do, it did. It was quite impressive.”
