DC Motorsports Team Continues to Demonstrate Consistency at NHRA Brainerd Nationals

BRAINERD, MN – On paper, the 2023 NHRA Brainerd Nationals might look like an event the DC Motorsports team would prefer to put behind them, but looks can be deceiving. Alexis DeJoria was defeated in the first round of eliminations on Sunday after starting from the eighth seed, and while the team had hoped for a long day of going rounds, there is no denying that they have arguably one of the most consistent cars in the Funny Car category at a point in the season where having a dialed-in combination is key.

The Bandero Premium Tequila Toyota GR Supra made four solid runs out of five throughout the weekend at the penultimate event of the NHRA Camping World Series’ ‘regular season.’ As the No. 8 qualifier, DeJoria drew No. 9 qualifier Tim Wilkerson as her round-one opponent on race day. DeJoria started the day with a 12-7 record versus ‘Wilk’ and was looking to extend her round-win tally at a facility where she has had success in the past. Against Wilkerson, DeJoria powered the Bandero Supra to its quickest pass of the weekend, clocking a 3.906 E.T. but came up just short of her opponent’s 3.883-second run in a close race.

DEJORIS AND TEAM ARE LOOKING TO USE BRAINERD FOR A RUN AT THE CHAMPIONSHIP

Brainerd, MN – During the 2014 event, DeJoria became the first Funny Car pilot to clock a sub-four second run on the BIR track (3.998 E.T. during round two of eliminations).

Currently occupying the No. 6 spot in the standings with only two events remaining before the fields are set for the playoffs. Less than two competition rounds separate the third through sixth place drivers.  This makes Brainerd a key event to set the team up for a championship run.

Alexis talks about the Lucas Oil Nationals, “We only have two races left to put ourselves in the best possible position to start the Countdown, so it’s crucial we do well this weekend. We dropped to sixth in the standings last weekend, but luckily, number three through six are pretty bunched up, points-wise. Thirty-two points, less than two rounds, separates us so there’s an opportunity to make some big moves.

“We have a great car, we’ve just had some mishaps lately but we’ll bounce back. Historically, I’ve done well at Brainerd. I won the event in 2017, and in 2014, I was the first Funny Car driver to clock a three-second run there, so hoping for more Brainerd success this weekend.”

Eventful Weekend for Team Bandero at Topeka

TOPEKA, KS – Qualifying for the Menards NHRA Nationals Presented by PetArmor was anything but routine for Alexis DeJoria and the Bandero Premium Tequila Toyota GR Supra Funny Car team. Despite not taking the Tree during two of the three sessions, the three-time finalists in 2023 made the most of their sole qualifying attempt before advancing to the quarterfinals on race day.

In the opening qualifying round, a mechanical malfunction prevented DeJoria from being able to back up from the burnout. Crew chiefs Del Worsham and Nicky Boninfante didn’t let the mishap deter them and tuned the Bandero Supra to the fourth-quickest pass of the second session to put their DC Motorsports entry safely into the elimination field. During the third and final qualifying round, the team once again experienced an issue following the burnout, and DeJoria was forced to shut the car off. For a team that routinely has one of the best-performing cars in the category, the circumstances were unusual, but once again, they were able to quickly bounce back.

Starting from 12th on race day, DeJoria drew John Force as her first-round opponent. Against drag racing’s winningest driver, DeJoria clocked a 4.029 E.T. to defeat a tire-smoking Force. The run earned the Bandero team the advantage of lane choice over Bob Tasca in the next round, but their 4.046 E.T. couldn’t keep pace with Tasca’s 4.025, ending DeJoria’s day after the quarterfinals.

DeJoria and Bandero Premium Tequila Toyota GR Supra Funny Car head to Kansas

Topeka, KS – DeJoria sits in the No. 5 spot in the Funny Car standings with three races remaining before playoff positions are set. She will look to make up crucial ground at Heartland Motorsports Park as she attempts to crack back into the ‘top three’

Alexia explained, “These next two races are really going to make or break our starting position in the playoffs. It’s been a rough couple of races. We had a strong showing in Denver with our runner-up finish and qualified well in Sonoma, but we also had two first-round exits in a row and dropped down to fifth by the time the Western Swing was said and done. We’re going to keep pushing forward and hopefully, we can make moves this weekend. With this being the last race in Topeka, obviously, everyone is going to be going after that last Heartland Motorsports Park trophy, and we’ll be gunning for it as well.”

Bandero Team Runs Strong in Sonoma But Comes Up Short on Race Day

SONOMA, CA – After an impressive qualifying performance that saw Alexis DeJoria clock the two best laps of the day on Friday, and another solid run on Saturday, the Bandero Premium Tequila Toyota GR Supra Funny Car team looked prime for a long day of going rounds on Sunday at the NHRA Sonoma Nationals.

DeJoria unloaded with a 3.942 E.T. during the weekend’s first qualifying session to place her name on the top of the Funny Car timing sheets. She backed up her Q1 effort on Friday night with another impressive blast of 3.966 seconds at 327.82 MPH and was the only Funny Car driver to make a full pull down the Sonoma Raceway track during that session. DeJoria and her Del Worsham-guided team’s strong qualifying performance earned six bonus points overall and placed them in the No. 2 seed to start race day. DeJoria pulled up to the line on Sunday morning, ready to square off against Paul Lee, her round-one competitor, but an early step of the throttle led to a red light start for the six-time Funny Car winner, and Lee advanced into the next round.

“Qualifying went really well out here in Sonoma,” said DeJoria, a three-time finalist in 2023. “We got six crucial bonus points from Friday’s qualifying runs, which we definitely needed because first round, unfortunately, I red-lit. It was an extremely long light but I’m not trying to make any excuses for myself. It’s inexcusable and I will just take this and go back home and keep working on my reaction times.

Alexis DeJoria Powers to Provisional Pole at Sonoma

SONOMA, CA – Alexis DeJoria powered the Bandero Premium Tequila Toyota GR Supra Funny Car to the provisional pole on Friday at the NHRA Sonoma Nationals. Right out of the gate, DeJoria and her Del Worsham-led team unloaded with the quickest pass in the opening qualifying session, recording a 3.942 E.T. at 326.56 MPH to go to the top of the timing sheets.

As the No. 1 qualifier after the first round, DeJoria was in the final pairing of Funny Cars to run during what is typically considered the ‘field setting’ Q2 night session under the Sonoma Raceway lights. DeJoria and the Bandero team watched as every single Funny Car ahead of them struggled to make a full pull down the track. With no sub-four-second runs on the board, DeJoria’s Q1 pass remained in the top spot when she pulled up to make her second qualifying run. The three-time finalist in 2023 laid down another stout pass, clocking a 3.966 at 327.82 MPH. For posting the two quickest runs of the day, the Bandero team was rewarded with six bonus points, scooping up all points available to them.

“Del Worsham, Nicky Boninfante, and our whole team have done such a great job with making this car consistent. We have one of the best race cars out here, we’re just missing that Wally on race day. We were hoping to run a bit faster tonight; we were on track to run an 84 but it just ate up the clutch. But hey, we still made it down the track when no one else did, and that says a lot,” explained DeJoria.

DEJORIA LOOKING TO FINISH THE WESTERN SWING WITH A VICTORY

Sonoma, CA – Including in 2021 and 2022, DeJoria has advanced to the semifinals four times out of her eight Sonoma Raceway appearances.  Her teams understands what the car needs and plans to hit it hard this weekend to chance after her ever elusive win in Sonoma.

Alexis is currently occupying the No. 3 position in the Camping World Series Funny Car point standings.  Aside from one event, she and the Bandero Premium Tequila Toyota GR Supra Funny Car has maintained a top five ranking throughout the course of the season

Alexis discusses Sonoma, “Sonoma is a quick track. The conditions typically allow us the ability to run really good E.T.s., especially during that Friday night session. Sonoma is a track that I’ve never won at, but always wanted to. It’s an amazing facility, we’ve done really well there minus getting a Wally. We’re looking really good right now, we have one of the best cars out there, and it’s just stringing that consistency together from track to track. We even went to the finals in Denver which is a tough track to figure out, so, if we could do it there, we can do it in Sonoma.”

No. 3 Ranked Alexis DeJoria Out Early in Seattle

KENT, WA – Alexis DeJoria entered the Flav-R-Pac NHRA Nationals coming off of a runner-up finish in Denver the weekend prior, returning to a track where she got her first national event win in Top Alcohol Funny Car, and was aiming for continued success at the scenic facility.

Behind the wheel of her Bandero Premium Tequila Toyota GR Supra, she started the weekend by unloading with a quick run right off the trailer. In the first qualifying session, she posted a 3.997-second pass at 319.98 MPH. She then backed up her solid Friday afternoon pass with another good lap in the third and final qualifying round on Saturday, before settling into the eighth position on the Pacific Raceways ladder.

On race day, DeJoria faced Chad Green, who she eliminated in a first-round matchup at the previous event in Denver. At this race, Green was able to get redemption when DeJoria’s machine smoked the tires as she was nearing the finish line while he made a clean pass to cross the beams first for the win.

Alexis DeJoria Races to Final Round at NHRA Mile-High Nationals, Advances Two Positions to Third

MORRISON, CO – Racing in front of a capacity crowd on Sunday, Funny Car driver Alexis DeJoria added one last Bandimere Speedway milestone to her résumé when she scored a runner-up finish at the final NHRA Mile-High Nationals. Her Bandero Premium Tequila Toyota GR Supra was on track to make its best pass of the day in the final round, but a hurt piston prevented DeJoria from defeating Matt Hagan. The Funny Car final round was the last pair of cars to go down the track at the Mile-High Nationals at Bandimere, which is due to close at the conclusion of the 2023 season. By advancing to the final round, DeJoria advanced two positions from fifth up to third in the Funny Car point standings.

DeJoria’s weekend got off to a solid start on Friday when she earned a bonus point for making the third-quickest pass of the first qualifying session, a 4.104 E.T. She improved to a 4.021 E.T. at 324.83 MPH in the final fourth session on Saturday, giving her the No. 9 position for Sunday eliminations.

DeJoria and crew chief Del Worsham stayed in the 4.00-second range in the first round, using a 4.089 E.T. to defeat Chad Green. DeJoria and second-round opponent Cruz Pedregon both had traction issues on the hot Bandimere racing surface, but DeJoria was able to pedal her way to another round win, earning a spot in the next Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge. Dropped cylinders was the issue that plagued DeJoria and fellow Toyota driver J.R. Todd in the semifinals, and again, DeJoria was able to power through for the win.
