Extreme 10.5

When he lost in the finals at St. Louis due to a flat tire, Dean Goforth set out on a mission to win in Columbus.  He was relentless as he powered through a tough field of Extreme Pro Stock cars to meet Doug Kirk in the finals.  Kirk would go red by .004 and loose against Goforth's 4.130 173.25 MPH pass.

Round 1 would be a repeat of the first round at the ADRL race in Virginia just a month ago.  Only this time the elder Goforth would beat his son Cary with a 4.184 171.60 MPH to a slowing 6.136 98.01 MPH run.

Pete Berner would given Goforth a run for his money in round 2.  The cars where nearly even at the hit, .022 to a .028 with Goforth powering through on the other end with a 4.129 172.76 MPH pass to Brener's 4.147 172.74 MPH run.

Semi-final round action would be a repeat of the St. Louis final.  Only this time Gahm would break at the flash of yellow.  Gofoth was ready though, his 4.109 174.21 MPH pass would be low for the round and fastest ET for the event!

Kirk would beat John Montecalvo on a holeshot in the first round.  His slower 4.203 172.17 pass would beat the 4.186 171.90 MPH run of Montecalvo.  Reaction times where .023 for Kirk and .058 for Montecalvo.  Margin of victory, .018 at the stripe!

In round 2 Kirk would face the red Mustang of Robert Patrick Jr.  This was a close battle with Kirk taking a close victory 4.165 172.92 MPH to a slightly slower 4.187 165.92 MPH pass of Patrick.

The semi's would see Kirk face his toughest race of eliminations.  Kirk would win on a holeshot over the Wilson Manifold sponsored entry of Matt Hartford on another holeshot.  Hartford would run a few thousandths quicker with a 4.143 172.67 MPH run to Kirk's 4.145 173.54 MPH hit.  The difference was at the tree with Kirk leaving first with a .047 light to Hartford's .069.

Extreme 10.5

The winner of Flowmaster Extreme 10.5 is one of the best examples I know of that demonstrates how persistence and patients will pay off if you're willing to stay the course.  Spiro Pappas by far demonstarted just that over the last 4 ADRL races.  The team has battle back from 2 fires and an ill handling hot rod to not only win their first ADRL event ever, but also to be the 2nd 10.5 car to run in the 3 second zone.  Pappas would face none other than 2 time world champion Billy Glidden in the finals.  Glidden would red lite away any chance of winning when he went -.010 at the hit.  Pappas would get away clean, but slow to a 4.186 148.31 MPH pass when his transmission failed at half track.

Pappas would take out the newly wrapped Procharger equipped Camaro driven by Jeff Dickey in round 1.  Dickey would have the advantage at the start with a .026 to .043 reaction time.  Pappas would power through with a 4.200 181.96 MPH run to Dickey's lifting 4.601 160.52 MPH pass.

In round 2, Jeff Paulk's 4.150 178.99 MPH blast could not hold off Pappas' 4.037 188.86 MPH hit.  To add insult to injury, Pappas had a perfect reaction time, .000

The semi-finals would place Spiro against the new crowned "First in the 3's" Chuck Ulsch.  It was a title bout if ever there was one.  Pappas' tuner, Don Bailey, left little on the table as the team carded their first 3 second pass with a 3.992 @ 190.11 MPH blast to Ulsch's 4.051 197.48 hit.  The driver brought his "A" game as well, leaving on Ulsch with a .002 to .092 reaction time.  This makes Pappas the 2nd inductee into the Mickey Thompson Extreme 10.5  3 Second Club.  Only 3 spots left, who will be next?  Could we see Team DEEZ Texan Todd Moyer or perhaps the resurgent Team Titan with Gary White at the helm?  Or maybe one of the nitrous team will find that little extra horse power they're looking for.  Either way, it'll be exciting to watch with only 2 races left in the season!

Tony Wilson was Glidden's first round opponent.  Wilson initially had problems firing the car which necessitated a shorter than normal burnout.  Wilson's 4.396 165.07 MPH hit was no match for Billy's 4.17.5 171.47 MPH run.

In round 2 Glidden would beat Jake Carlton's 2006 GTO with a piston burning 4.121 172.14  MPH hit to Carlton's out of shape 5.177 101.33 MPH pass.

Team DEEZ Todd Moyer took on Glidden in the semi-finals.  The Texan's car would move around a bit forcing him to lift and slow to a 5.981 83.99 MPH pass.  Glidden lifted when he didn't see Moyer as he approached the finish line slowing to an parts saving 4.162 165.15 MPH.

Pro Nitrous

From the #16 qualifying position, Thomas "Slick" Myers would wow the crowd with a victory over Team Al-Anabi's "The Iceman" Shannon Jenkins in the finals with a 4.023 183.89 MPH run to Jenkins out of shape 4.288 156.03 MPH hit.

The tale of Myers wins starts in the first round when he'd take out the #1 qualifier Pat Stoken with a 4.184 180.50 MPH to a tire spinning 4.345 162.98 MPH of Stoken.

In round 2, Stan Allen would wait on Myers to fire after the team forgot to re-install the plug wires.  All of the other competitors standing around the car pitched in to help.  Allen would loose when his 4.240 173.87 MPH pass was not enough for Myer's 4.046 185.74 MPH run.

Myers would take out Team Al-Anabi's Burton Auxier in the semi-finals when Auxier left early.  His -.004 red light was wipe out the low ET of eliminations, 3.911 @ 189.82 MPH!

Jenkins' march to the finals would start with a string of low 3.90 runs against John Bartunek's very clean 68 Camaro.  Bartunek would get loose shortly after the hit and loose against The Iceman's 3.933 189.98 MPH pass.

Steve Vick would take on Jenkins in round 2.  His off pace run would hand an easy victory to Jenkins, 3.926 190.32 MPH pass to a slowing 4.461 125.93 MPH.

In the semi-finals, Jenkins would win easily over Johnny Pilcher's 63 Split window Corvette when Pilcher would get loose slowing to a 5.822 80.82 MPH pass.  Jenkins ran another low 3.90 ET with his 3.918 at 191.00 MPH run.

This was the ADRL's first visit to the famed National Trail Raceway in Hebron Ohio.  They had a great showing in spectators, vendors and race teams.  Per the ADRL's main website, every category saw a new winner visit the winners circle.  The overriding concern the crews showed Friday morning over the condition of the track surface was put to rest during the first round of qualifying.   Not only did the Extreme Pro stock cars get down the track, by the end of the race, we would see stellar performance in all of the categories.  My hats off to the ADRL crew and Jim Layton's great staff at National Trail.  They made it happen.  Had anyone tried to convince this reporter we would see the performance levels we experienced Friday and Saturday, I would have simple thought you confused.

Jason Scruggs continued to struggle this weekend missing the show when he was bumped from the 16th spot during the 4th round of qualifying.  The team seems to have lost the handle on the setup, something that can happen to the best out there.  I'm amazed at how a seemingly innocuous change on a race set up will force a team to chase the tune for weeks before they find the problem.  Given their championship winning history, I'm certain they'll figure it out.

Mel Bush's new Tommy D'Aprile driven 70 and a half Camaro made a great debut in Columbus.  The team qualified 8th and lost in the first round to Quain Stott.

Another of the beautiful 70.5 Camaro's showed up in the pits of Randy Weatherford this weekend.  The beautiful blue WS Construction entry would qualify 10th and loose in the first round to Steve Vick.

Dave Hance took a wild ride in the final round of qualifying in his New york Motorsports Extreme 10.5 mount.  Per his crew chief 'Big Sexy', "He is sore but is already plotting to have the car ready for ADRL Rockingham."  Parts have already been ordered and will met the team when they return to the Jessup Georgia based shop where the New Yorker keeps his car.

Pat Bennett also had a meeting with the wall at National Trail.  It was no where near the 5g + hit Hance took.

Pro Extreme

The Lucas oil backed team of Cody Barklage has steadily improved in performance over the last 5 races with consistent mid to low 3.80 passes in his 67 Pro Extreme Firebird.  Cody would take on Joshua Hernandez's 57 Chevy in the finals winning when Hernandez crossed the centerline DQing his finals effort.  This was Barklage's first visit to the ADRL's National Guard winner circle, I doubt it will be his last.

Barklage would take out Wes Johnson's #12 qualified 53 Corvette in round 1 with a 3.851 @ 193.21 MPH blast to 4.017 188.81 MPH pass.

Joey Martin would loose fire on the burnout and had an easy victory to Barklage in round 2.  Barklage carded a 3.957 193.52 MPH pass.

The semi-final round pitted Frankie "The Mad Man" Taylor against Barklage.  Taylor would get loose in the middle of the course and lift handing another easy victory to Cody, 3.785 199.02 MPH to 4.715 109.41 MPH.

The resurgent Joshua Hernandez would face Brian Daniels in round 1 winning by over a tenth with a 3.768, 201.70 MPH to 3.863 192.69 MPH.

Bubba Stanton would also loose fire on the burnout in his 2nd round race with Hernandez.  Joshua would make another bracket style consistent 3.70 run, 3.799 @ 201.16 MPH.

John Stanley's Hagerstown MD 68 Camaro would be Hernandez's semi-final round opponent.  Stanley would leave first but was unable to outrun the 3.742 203.68 MPH pass with his 3.841 193.99 MPH hit.  This was John's first semi-final round showing in ADRL action.  Look for more from this team as the work to refine their race day set-up.
