WORSHAM DRIVES CAMRY TO VICTORY IN LUCAS OIL NHRA NATIONALS

TORRANCE, CA – Del Worsham drove his DHL Toyota Camry Funny Car to a 3.908-second pass to defeat Matt Del Worsham - 2016 Brainerd, winHagan in the finals of the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway in Brainerd, Minn., Sunday. The victory is the 12th of the season for a Toyota driver in NHRA Nitro competition.

Worsham, who lost in the rain-delayed Seattle final on Saturday, earned a second opportunity on the weekend with victories over Bob Bode, Tim Wilkerson and Courtney Force setting up his final round match-up with Hagan. The win is the first of the season for Worsham after previously advancing to three final rounds and comes in his milestone 500th career Mello Yello Drag Racing Series start.

“We kind of had a mulligan in getting another chance to win a final after yesterday,” said Worsham, the 2015 Funny Car world champion. “We won this year earlier than last year. It’s been a long hard fight to win one. We had a quick turnaround with live TV and I can’t say enough about our DHL Toyota Camry team. I’m excited to finally have won a race. It’s been a long year already, but we’re running well right now. I’m really looking forward to the Countdown.”

Worsham wasn’t the only Toyota driver who had a chance to win a pair of races on the weekend as Antron Brown also advanced to today’s finals after winning the postponed Seattle Top Fuel final on Saturday. The two-time world champion defeated Chris Karamesines, Clay Millican and Tony Schumacher before losing traction in the finals against Brittany Force as he tried to double up.

“It was a great weekend for our team,” said Brown. “That’s the way things go. We won one on Saturday and we made it to the final on Sunday. It was still an awesome, incredible weekend for us. I’m just so proud of all of our guys. They’ve done a phenomenal job this weekend and we have an incredible team. In the final, they were going for it and tore their car up. We had a part that never fails – fail. Our clutch locked up about 40 feet out.”

Shawn Langdon joined his teammate in the Top Fuel semi-finals by dispatching Luigi Novelli and fellow Toyota driver J.R. Todd in the first two rounds. Doug Kalitta, like his teammate Todd, was a first-round winner before he fell in the second round against Force. Both Richie Crampton and Morgan Lucas lost in their opening round runs.

In Funny Car, both Chad Head and Cruz Pedregon were defeated in their first-round runs.

The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series will close out the regular season portion of its schedule Labor Day weekend with the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, September 2-5.
