Who will win SCSN Pro Street, East or West?

2009 Pacific Street Car Association (PSCA) Champion Randy Walker

By Deborah-WFO

Who will take the win at the Street Car Super Nationals this Year? Will the West finally earn a Pro Street Victory? Will the East continue as the unprecedented champions of the top class and yet again steal the $20,000 purse? No doubt, some heavy hitters and fast rides are coming armed and ready to roll the dice at the Las Vegas Strip, November 19-22, 2009. A quick scope of the contenders list indicates fierce competition in what will be an all out brutal battle of East versus West, Champion versus Champion, Pro Mod versus Pro Street Shootout. All bets are on.

Top of the list is SCSN IV Pro Street winner Kirk Wilmes of Altus Oklahoma in his G-Force Blown Firebird. Last year Wilmes showed up and seemingly ran a flawless string of very consistent passes in the six second- teens range. Wicked consistency and fast times made Wilmes untouchable. Wilmes and the rest of the class though will have to contend with Coby Rabon of Ridgeway South Carolina who just made a clean sweep at the Orlando World Street Nationals with his BBC Twin Turbo Mustang. Rabon was the number one qualifier, low ET holder, and the WSN Champion all in the same event. Rabon’s career best is 6.03 @ 245 mph.

The West’s new 2009 Pacific Street Car Association (PSCA) Champion Randy Walker of Palm Desert California will certainly have his hands full with these two guys. Not to worry though he’s teaming with the East. Pro Mod legend Charles Carpenter, the 2009 ADRL World Finals V Pro Nitrous runner up and multiple time Champion will be in the house. Walker just set the PSCA’s new ET record at 6.26 in his Fulton BBC Nitrous El Camino.

The West Coast will have several turbo terrors representing, but will they have enough to take the East Coast’s Rabon? Giuseppe Gentile of Sun Valley California has been out testing in his new BBF twin turbo Mustang. Gentile has the PSCA’s mph record at 232.11 mph and just won the PSCA’s World Finals this month. He has an ET best of 6.27, but is aiming for the fives with his new set up.

Will it be though that the predominately East Pat Musi five pack will just clean house? Musi, an eight time National Street Car Champion from Carteret, New Jersey, will debut his new Dodge Stratus with 864 cubic inches at the SCSN. He will be joined by Joe Dunne of Wolcott Connecticut who has a best of 6.23 @ 221 mph.  2007 Pro Mod Champion and record holder Hector Estrada of Puerto Rico will debut his new 63 Corvette with a 903 cubic inch Musi EFI wedge engine. Vinny DeMieri of Dix Hill New York, lasts years SCSN IV runner up, will be in the pack with a Musi 737 nitrous injected engine. DeMieri has a career best of 6.27 @ 223 mph. The last of the Musi Five is West Coast contender Tim Henry of Valencia California who is sporting a Musi 773 cubic inch nitrous engine. Henry has a career best of 6.33 @ 227.72 mph. This pack is gong to be tough to beat.

But wait! Troy Coughlin is coming to SCSN. Word has it he is doing secret testing at the Las Vegas Strip and he is going to have an astounding 930 cubes under the hood. It just goes to show that you never know who just may be lurking at the SCSN. Rumor has it that behind the scenes there is a secret un-posted list of VIP participants and attendees for the 2009 event. We will all just have to wait and see. Will Coughlin be able to take out the Musi Five for the SCSN V win?

How about two time West Coast Pro Mod Champion and SCSN III number one qualifier Lee Frank of Missoula, Montana with a 780 cubic inch Reher Morrison loaded with Speed Tech Nitrous? Will it be a nitrous contender that wins? Kelly Bluebaugh, 2008 WCHRA Pro Street Champion of Phoenix Arizona, will be in attendance with his new 784 cubic inch Nitrous engine loaded with 4 stages. Bluebaugh built a nitrous beast that ran to the SCSN final round in 2006. Now he’s back in the driver’s seat and on the hunt. Terry Housley will be driving the Folsom, California based Balance Bros Racing Corvette that ran to the Semi’s last year at SCSN. The Corvette has been running mainly 1/8 mile events with a Sonny’s 864 Nitrous Hemi. Rod Pearce will also represent the West in the nitrous category with an 864 cubic inch Sonny’s wedge. Pearce just set records in Sacramento and has a best of 6.23 @ 231 mph. With these competitors and Musi’s Five, Nitrous could be hard to beat. How will East and West Nitrous cars play out in the rounds with such a tight field?

Naturally Aspirated contenders have become a battle of big cubic inch giants. No power adder needed here. Dean and Cary Goforth from Holdenville Oklahoma will both bank on their Sonny’s 800 plus cubic inch naturally aspirated entries to combat the field. The Goforths’ are holding a wicked pair of 6.29 best ET’s in their hand. Frank Tamez of Yakima Washington is just short of 900 cubic inches. Tamez is the 2008 Worlds Quickest and Fastest full bodied naturally aspirated car with an automatic transmission. Perhaps it will be 2007 ADRL Extreme Pro Stock winner Mike Bruno of East Hazel Crest Illinois in his 2007 GTO. Bruno also running a big inch Sonnys engine and has a best of 6.30 @ 222 mph.

It looks like the West Coast has the TAFC experience advantage. Long time TAFC driver Bret Williamson of Gilroy California will be in attendance with the ‘Beast”. Shawn Jones of Albuquerque New Mexico and multiple time finalist of the NHRA’s TAFC class will compete in his Blown 57 Chevy. Finally Mike Maggio of San Dimas California has a Top Alcohol funny car engine in his Pro Mod Corvette. Maggio is making quick strides teaming with NHRA’s number one TAFC team, O’Bannon Racing.

Randy Kay of Reno Nevada makes top rank in the list of the bad boy Blown contenders and will be a plus for the West. Kay has a personal best of 6.10 @ 241 mph. It could be the case though that competitor’s from Canada will make a run for the border with the cash. Two time West Coast Pro Mod Champion Trevor Lowe of Agassiz, British Columbia, Canada will bank on his Alan Johnson Blown 526 with a career best of 6.11 @ 238 mph. Multiple time Pro Mod Champions Lee Smith of Salem Oregon and John Scialpi of Phelan California both have career bests of 6.26 on their record in the blown category. .

With this many Champions, someone is definitely going to have to catch lady luck and be on top of their game to win the SCSN V. The event is scheduled for a 32 car field meaning 5 rounds of unforgiving competition. There will be no second chances. So who will it be East or West? Join us to find out live at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway November 19-22, 2009.
