Elma, NY– The old saying “If it wasn’t for bad luck I’d have none at all” definitely fits Mike Janis’ 2011 Norwalk experience. The trying weekend began on Wednesday before the event when Janis and Co- Crew Chief, Kevin Peters, found themselves with a blown out tire and broken leaf spring on the team’s trailer. Luckily they had all the parts needed in the trailer. So, in the wee hours of the morning and on the side of a highway Janis and Peters fired up the generator and completed the repairs themselves.
Once at the track the bad luck followed the team into Friday when all racing was cancelled due to rain leaving two runs on Saturday to get into the show. On his first run Janis pedaled his Eaton Aeroquip Mustang to a 6.13 elapsed time. In the second session Janis’s bad luck continued when he was plagued by parts failure slowing him to a 6.22 leaving him to sweat out the rest of qualifying. Luckily the previous 6.13 run held up leaving Janis in the 16th qualifying spot.
In round one Janis was paired with the number one qualifying entry. Everything looked fine after the burnout but when Janis tried to leave the line the car lurched forward and stopped. Once again parts failure cost Janis a chance at a Wally.
“I guess we have to find every way to lose before we can learn how to win,” said a disappointed Team Owner, Mike Janis.
While their weekend of racing was over the team stayed at the Norwalk facility and participated in a closed test session with the Al-Anabi Team of Alan Johnson Racing. Janis tested both his ADRL Duster and his NHRA Mustang, both will pleasing results but, the bad luck continued on the trip home.
About an hour into their trip the team had another blow out; this time, a front tire on the teams transport. Not only did they have the misfortune of a blown tire they did it in a work zone that was cut down to one lane.
“We called 911 and an Ohio Trooper came out to help us. He was one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. He called us a repair service and stayed with us while we held up traffic for about half an hour. According to the radio we had it backed up about six miles. I’m just glad we’re home and this experience is behind us,” said Janis.
Next Up For Janis will be the ADRL Ford Drive One Summer Drags VII July 15-16 at US 131 in Martin Michigan.
