Todd Drives Camry To Fourth In NHRA Las Vegas Qualifying; Eyes Fourth Straight Vegas Win on Sunday

LAS VEGAS – J.R. Todd ran a career-best 3.856-second pass at 333.58 mph in his DHL Toyota Camry to qualify fourth in Funny Car to lead Toyota into Sunday’s NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Todd will be looking for a record fourth consecutive Las Vegas win on Sunday as he also chases a second straight Funny Car world championship. He held the provisional pole on Friday after running his quickest pass of the weekend in the second session.

“That was a big run on Friday,” said Todd, who will race Jonnie Lindberg in the first-round of eliminations. “I didn’t think it would hold up for number one. It’s just good to be in the top-five going into Sunday. I’d love to keep this streak alive. Not only because we’d have four in a row here but, because we need to go out and win these next two races. We can’t control what the guys in front of us are going to do, but if they slip up and we win these next two, it could be pretty exciting at Pomona. Looking at our past success, I feel we have a pretty good handle on this DHL Toyota Camry right now.”

Todd’s Camry teammate, Shawn Langdon, also registered a new career Funny Car low at 3.861 seconds to place one spot behind Todd in fifth. For the weekend, Langdon ran 3.92 or better in each of his four runs. He will face Cruz Pedregon in round one. If both Todd and Langdon win their opening round match-ups, they will square off in an all-Camry second round.

Richie Crampton registered the quickest time among the Toyota Top Fuel drivers, placing seventh with a 3.709-second pass at 327.03 mph. He will be looking for his second win of the Countdown when he opens with Austin Prock.

Doug Kalitta, who entered the weekend second in points, qualified ninth with a 3.725 on his final pass. He will continue his chase for the title with a first-round match-up against Shawn Reed. Antron Brown struggled on Friday before bouncing back on Saturday with a 3.726-second run to qualify 11th. He will kick off Sunday’s eliminations against Terry McMillen.

Tomorrow’s Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event coverage on FS1 begins at 3:00 p.m. with Sunday Live, followed by eliminations scheduled at 4:00 p.m. (all times ET)
