WARTBURG, ONTARIO – After driving a Top Sportsman 1957 Chevy in Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts competition in 2009, Scott Wildgust is racing this year in a car with the engine behind him.

The team debuted a Top Dragster entry at the opening round at Cayuga last month, and with team co-owner Bill White, Wildgust is looking to a positive season of racing.

“The car has a lot more potential,” noted Wildgust, who qualified number one in two Quick 32 Sportsman Series events last year.  He also qualified number three with a 6.839-second pass at the 2010 opener, this time with the new 2010 Bos dragster, and went to the semi-final round.

The Top Dragster is powered by a 400-cubic inch small block Chevy engine, courtesy of the shops of Ajax Engines. A Kobelco supercharger sits atop the engine, which is fueled with an ERD (Engine Research & Development) fuel system. A two-speed Powerglide helps get the power to the rear wheels.

“We will be trying different things with the car,” noted Kirk Silbermann of Ajax Engines, who has had a relationship with Wildgust for some time. “That motor should run a half-second faster. If all goes well in testing, we will turn up the wick.”

Crew chief for the new car is John Weima, and helping with the effort is Joe McCann, Avery, Sienna and Stacey Wildgust.

Sponsorship includes Stratford Automation, Bosco Pool and Spa, NGK Spark Plugs and Ajax Engines.

Wildgust said he was going to limit his racing in 2010, but he started talking with White, and the pair built the car as a team. Wildgust added he will drive the car in all competition events, but plans are to get White behind the wheel of the dragster sometime.

Most of Wildgust’s racing career has been behind the wheel of a front-engined car such as a Funny Car or more recently a Pro Modified, but he did race a Top Dragster about 10 years ago, and said he has adjusted to the different car this year.

“I can certainly see more in the dragster,” he noted.

“Our number one priority in the Quick 32 Sportsman Series is to stay consistent,” he added. “Sure, we want to qualify well, but this deal is all about going laps.

“But the most important thing about all this is to have fun.”

The Wildgust and White entry will be one of many Top Dragsters and Top Sportsman cars of the Quick 32 Sportsman Series which will compete this weekend during the RPM Magazine Family PowerFest & Media Weekend at the Grand Bend Motorplex. The event will be the second round in the six-race series for this year.
