San Antonio Raceway Readies for Big Memorial Weekend Show

By JM Hallas

Marion, TX – This Saturday(May 28th) San Antonio Raceway hosts its “Night of Fire” show on the 1/8th mile track. The show features the Texas Outlaw Pro Modified Association(TOPMA) for its first of two visits to the speedplant just east of San Antonio.

TOPMA is some of the baddest door slammers on the planet with a variety of engine combination(blown, nitrous injected, turbo charged) displaying some of the wildest bodies and graphics. TOPMA’s first rule(and only real rule, except safety), “Run what ya brung and hope it’s enough.” They run heads up, on a .400 pro tree and a pro ladder elimination, usually tripping the timers with sub four second passes, around 200mph.

Steve Wiley will look to repeat in his return visit to SAR after taking home the $50,000 payday during the Bounty Hunters Grudge Nationals earlier in the year. Wiley had planned on running a TOPMA show, but when that show was rained out, Wiley packed up and headed to SAR. During the event Wiley knocked out Kye Kelley(Street Outlaws), James ‘Birdman’ Finney and then Ricky Delgado in the finals.

Some other notables schedule to appear; Frankie ‘The Mad Man’ Taylor, Gaylen Smith, Bob Alexander, Kevin Harget and Chuck Poindexter.

The TOPMA series returns to San Antonio Raceway on August 31st for another show.

And if that weren’t enough of a show.

The Southwest Superchargers are co-starring the event, again making the first of two meetings. This is another unique blend of all supercharged engines(big blocks, small blocks, hemis) in Dragsters, Altereds and Funny Car bodied cars. They also run off a .400 pro tree, heads up and using 4.50 index for the San Antonio race.

The Southwest Superchargers make their return later in the year(Oct. 15th)

Wow, what a show that is. Oh, still not enough?

San Antonio Raceway will also run a rescheduled IHRA Summit Super Series bracket race to make up a rained out event from last month. The Summit Super Series includes Electronics(Box), Foot Brake(No-box) and Jr. Dragsters all running for track points and their chance to make it to the Division 4 Renegades, Summit Team Finals held at SAR this year.(Sept. 29th-Oct.2nd)

That’s it, right?

Ok, one more little tidbit. Also making an appearance will be ‘Nitro’ Mike Kunz with his world record holding, fire breathing, wheelstanding, PT Cruiser.

All this action takes place on one day, Saturday, May 28th with gates opening at high noon, with time trials and qualifying slated to kick off at 1:00pm.
