Janis Looking to Build on Recent Success at NHRA Southern Nationals

Courtesy of: Mike Janis Racing Inc.

Elma, NY – After posting a semi-final finish two weeks ago at the 24th annual O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Spring Nationals Mike Janis and his Aeroquip backed team have been busy attempting to learn all they can about their new US Transmission Quick Drive equipped B&J transmission.

“We’re running two cars this season and the only thing that’s the same between the two is the tranny set up,” said Mike Janis. “Every run we make we learn something. At the last GSA race we made some movement in our program and were able to take that to our other car. Now, I’m pretty confident that we can start to string some pretty good runs together and build from there,” added Janis.

Janis is quick to give credit for his new found performance to all that have helped with the transition from clutch to converter.

“Brian (Doan) and Mark Herbold of BDR have been a tremendous asset. Tony Eben from US Transmission Performance has given us a fantastic piece. LAT Racing Oils’ Danny Vaca really stepped up when it came to developing a totally new transmission fluid for us. His new tranny fluid runs cooler than anything we’ve come across. I can’t thank these guys enough for all their help. I just hope I can give them something in the way of a win soon,” said Janis.

JON CAPPS RIDES MOMENTUM INTO ATLANTA

Commerce, GA – After a successful qualifying effort last week in Houston, Texas at the NHRA Springnationals,  Jon Capps is east bound and down and will return to the seat of Paul Smith’s Monte Carlo Nitro Funny Car this weekend at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals contested at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga.

Capps, the 41-year old admissions counselor for WyoTech Automotive, Transportation and Technical College (http://www.wyotech.edu) from Las Vegas, Nev. has not come down for the virtual high of competing in the National Hot Rod Association’s premier Funny Car division for the first time since 2007. Although the Paul Smith owned and tuned Funny Car lost in a one round battle with perennial fan favorite Tim Wilkerson, Capps is convinced the Paul Smith Racing team can build off the positive momentum gained at Royal Purple Raceway last weekend.

World champion Jeg Jr. to star at JEGS Pacific SPORTSnationals

FONTANA, Calif. (May 11) — Fans attending this weekend’s JEGS Pacific SPORTSnationals presented by K&N Filters at Auto Club Dragway are in for a special treat with five-time world champion drag racer Jeg Coughlin Jr. set to compete in Super Comp and Super Gas.

One of the top 10 drag racers of all time, Coughlin is on a sabbatical from professional competition and is using his down time to return to his first love of Sportsman racing.

“If we could figure out a path to the winner’s circle it would be very special for me,” Coughlin said. “Not only are we proud sponsors of the event, but I know from many years of racing out here just how hard it is to win one of these things.

“A trophy from the JEGS Pacific SPORTSnationals would hold a high place of honor in my house. It’s every bit as hard, if not harder, to win a race in the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series as it is on the Full Throttle tour and the feeling of accomplishment is unreal.”

With momentum on their side, JEGS team heads for Norwalk

NORWALK, OH – Just two weeks after claiming a victory at the Division 3 season-opener at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis, Mike Coughlin and the rest of the JEGS Mail Order team will look to keep their momentum intact as they head for the series’ second stop this weekend in Norwalk, Ohio.

A two-time Division 3 champion in Top Sportsman, Coughlin drove his JEGS.com Chevy Cobalt to the class title in Indy, taking a crucial step towards what could potentially be his third division title in the last five years.

Riding on Coughlin’s recent success, Team JEGS’s Norwalk contingent will be rounded out by third-generation racer Troy Coughlin Jr. and Samantha Kenny, who both turned in impressive performances of their own in the Indy opener.

CONCORD, NC – When Robert Chambless, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Coca-Cola Bottling Company Consolidated, was looking for a way to bring his sales team together in a fun and energizing way, a day of learning the ropes of drag racing at Roy Hill’s Drag Racing School fit the bill perfectly.

On Wednesday, May 4th, Chambless and his team met at zMax Dragway just outside of Charlotte, NC, where they rode in the Roy Hill’s Drag School two and three-seater dragsters, watched a match race between Chambless and Hill in the school’s Super Comp dragsters, then took to the wheel themselves in six Roy Hill 2010 Mustangs for a full-on eliminations race between the entire team.

Troy Coughlin hoping to pick up where he left off in Atlanta

ATLANTA, GA – Pro Mod driver Troy Coughlin has a simple wish for this weekend’s Get Screened America Pro Mod Drag Racing Series event at Atlanta Dragway — pick up right where his JEGS.com team left off at the last tour stop in Houston.

Coughlin had his best run of the weekend in eliminations, coaxing a 6.06-second pass out of his small block, turbo-powered Pontiac GTO is a fractional loss to Danny Rowe. The past world champion Pro Street drag racer says if they can start Atlanta as strong as they finished Houston, they’ll be in great shape.

“The field in Pro Mod this year is exceptionally stout,” Coughlin said. “Every run you make needs to be as close to perfect as possible. Pro Mod gets three qualifying passes, so we have one less than the other pro categories to figure everything out, so we’re already under the gun. That really narrows your window for any corrections that may need to be made.

Red light start does little to deter Hernandez’

READING, PA – To the uninformed, Josh Hernandez’ results at last weekend’s ADRL Penske Truck Leasing Inaugural Northeast Drags at Maple Grove might seem disappointing: the former world champion struggled to get into the field, squeaked into the field in 12th in his last qualifying attempt after failing to get down the track in his two previous attempts, and lost first round because of a dreaded false start. Hardly something to talk about.

The entire B1 Racing team sees last weekend in a completely different and much more positive light.

The team made a late decision to change from their new Murf McKiney-built C5 Corvette back to their stalwart  ’57 Chevy Bel Air, which meant removing parts, replacing parts, and re-retrofitting parts to work on the ’57. In addition, they moved to an automatic transmission from the manual they had practically perfected.
