MARTIN, MI – Jason Hamstra had a win, three finals appearances and the points lead in Pro Extreme during an already brilliant 2011 American Drag Racing League (ADRL) season.

Now, he can add a victory at his home track in front of a mass of family and friends to an already extensive accomplishment list.

Showing tremendous consistency throughout at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park, Hamstra wrapped up his magical day by going 3.715 at 207.05 miles per hour to beat Todd Tutterow in the finals of the Ford Drive One Summer Drags VII.

“All of our friends and family drove here, and it feels good to get this win in front of them,” Hamstra said. “If you’re going to pick one race to win, this would be it. You can’t ask for a whole lot more.”

Wild evening of racing greets fans at Mopar Nitro Jam Nationals

GRAND BEND, ON – Peter Gallen 1, Tim Boychuk 0.  In a showdown that was billed as a battle of the fastest between Pennsylvania’s Peter Gallen and Alberta’s Tim Boychuk, it was all Gallen on Saturday as the driver of the “Poverty Stricken” 1974 Vega Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car blasted to a potential world record and a win in front of a capacity crowd at the Mopar Nitro Jam Nationals at the Grand Bend Motorplex in Ontario.

Gallen put a blistering 5.707 elapsed time on the charts at 247.25 miles per hour to pick up the win, his sixth of the season to wrap up a wild and crazy evening of racing in front of one of the biggest crowds in recent Grand Bend history.

“We felt like we had something to prove. We wanted to go out there and win this thing,” Gallen said. “To do that, we knew we had to run some pretty quick numbers and thankfully we were able to do that. The last time I raced Tim we didn’t get to race him in the final and we really wanted to go up against that team with a win on the line.

Williamson & Gore Motorsports Team back for ‘more’ in 2011

Courtesy of Jamie Clerf

The champions of the 2010 West Coast Outlaw Pro Mod Association (WCOPMA), the Williamson & Gore Motorsports Team and their mean-looking,satin black ’53 Studebaker is indeed back for ‘more’ in 2011. ‘More’ racing as they have committed to again running the six race WCOPMA schedule and, if the first two races of the season are any indication, ‘more’ competition, as it appears the rest of the class have stepped up their respective programs this year.

The team saw considerable success in 2010 appearing in the finals of all 5 races they attended (3 wins, 2 runner-ups) and recorded track records from Sacramento (where they achieved a class record 5.90) to Boise to Denver.

This year sees the team return with a slightly different personnel line-up and some enhancements to the mechanical side of things. What hasn’t changed, however, is the man behind the wheel of the potent 6 second machine – Bret Williamson, a talented race car fabricator and accomplished Top Alcohol Funny Car / ADRL driver, will again bring his natural driving skills and mechanical expertise to the team.

Martin, Al-Naemi and Goforth Lead Qualifying on Day 1 of ADRL Summer Drags VII

MARTIN, MI – Joey Martin had never raced at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park before Friday.

But, like everywhere else he’s been in 2011, the Pro Extreme standout made an immediate impression, the latest coming at the American Drag Racing League’s (ADRL) Ford Drive One Summer Drags VII.

Martin and his popular Lowmad scorched the U.S. 131 track under the lights, going 3.664 at 205 miles per hour in the third qualifying session, putting him in the No. 1 spot and just missing out on yet another track record in the latest chapter of his remarkable 2011 season.

“Just like all of the other tracks we roll up to, we just want to go from point A to B,” Martin said. “I’m in control of that, but we just have to race the track.”

Jan-Cen Eager for Action at Team Ford Drive One Summer Drags VII

Elma, NY – It’s been three weeks since Mike Janis has made a pass down a drag strip. It’s the longest break of the season for the veteran engine builder from Lancaster, NY and as far as his team is concerned it’s been too long.

“It’s weird. We have been so busy running two cars this year that a break no matter how short seems like forever. We’ve been in GO mode all year and while this short break was well needed it’s great to be heading back to the track,” said team owner/driver, Mike Janis.

The last time Janis took a trip down a drag strip was a scheduled test session after the NHRA Norwalk event.  Alan Johnson Performance Engineering’s Alan Johnson and Terry Morrow wanted to gain further data on their new 5300 engine that Janis is running.

“We are very lucky to be working with Alan, Terry and Rick. This has been a great experience for us and I think our latest test session has us moving closer to using the full potential of the new AJPE 5300. This engine, along with the chassis from Andy McCoy has us very excited,” said Mike Janis.

Turner returns to ‘The Bend’ 11 years after inaugural victory

GRAND BEND, ON – Do you remember what you were doing exactly 11 years ago? Jay Turner does. He was visiting victory lane atop his noble steed – a nitro-gulping, 2,000 horsepower Nitro Harley Davidson.

“It was a rainy weekend,” recalls Jay Turner of the first Mopar Nitro Jam Nationals ever held at the Grand Bend Motorplex in Ontario back in 2000. “But nothing could slow us down. We were determined to win that thing and sure enough we came away with the win.”

And that wasn’t all.  “I remember the enthusiasm of the fans. The crowd there was nuts,” Turner said. “I remember that the weather was bad almost all weekend, but the fans kept coming in. We packed the place. There was nothing that could deter those fans.”

ADRL Topeka And The Yellow Brick Road

By Camp Stanley

Hagerstown, MD – What else can we say about Topeka except that we should have stayed home like we threatened to do a few updates ago. Between the bad (REALLY ROTTEN, ROTTEN) luck and the weather, Topeka was nothing short of a disaster for us. We started the trip off with a stopover at National Trail Raceway in Columbus, Ohio and Friday night and Saturday morning should have told us something! Massive thunderboomers Friday night and Saturday morning cancelled the racing and our testing on Saturday.

But Sunday dawned a beautiful day and the National Trail Raceway track personnel gave us a track that was as good as they get. We left there, me on to Topeka and John, Scottie and Jimmy back home with a plan to change motors in Topeka since we decided that the experimental cam installed in the motor over the winter was a major culprit in our lack of performance.

I met up with Andreas Howald, better known as Andy who is one of the crew on Marcus Hilt’s Swiss Pro Mod in Topeka and put him right to work I did! Andy and I removed the primary engine from the Camaro and put the spare from under the bench between the chassis rails. We got it done with a lot of help from help from our friend, Mr “I only have duallie” John DeCerbo and one of his crew guys. And when John Stanley and crew arrived we finished it up and were ready to have at it! So we thought…

Courtesy of ADRL

O’FALLON. MO – Looking to make a major impact in the American Drag Racing League’s (ADRL) Extreme Pro Stock class, Team “O” Motorsports is going with a major name in the Pro Stock world.

The Texas-based team announced on Wednesday that it has named Pro Stock standout Dave Connolly as the driver of its Extreme Pro Stock car for this weekend’s Ford Drive One Summer Drags VII, which takes place Friday and Saturday at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, Mich.

“We are completely thrilled to announce that Dave Connolly will be in the driver’s seat of the Capstone Fuel, Ranger Glass Pontiac GXP XPS car at the ADRL’s Martin, Mich. event,” Team “O” Motorsports Marketing Representative Gary Lidiak said.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for Dave and our team, and we can’t wait to race this weekend in Michigan.”

With wins at 14 different NHRA tracks and 22 Pro Stock victories to his credit, the talented Connolly is one of the most successful young drivers in drag racing today.

His first national event win came in 2004 and his five straight victories in 2007 in the NHRA’s Pro Stock class was the second-longest consecutive win streak in PS history, making him one of only four drivers in the class to post five straight wins.
