Rain Wipes Out Day 1 Of Ohio Drags V, Sat Qualifying Starts at 9 AM

NORWALK, OH – After steady rain led to the cancellation of racing on the first day of the Summit Racing Equipment Ohio Drags V at Summit Motorsports Park, the American Drag Racing League (ADRL) announced a schedule change for Saturday’s racing.

There will now be two rounds of qualifying on Saturday for all classes, with the first scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.

The second round of qualifying is slated for 12 p.m., with eliminations set to follow in all classes at its regularly scheduled time of 3:30 p.m.

The inclement weather didn’t allow for any racing on Friday, leading ADRL officials to decide on two qualifying sessions on Saturday before eliminations for what is another impressive turnout of competitors.

NORWALK, OH – Numbers. It’s all about the numbers for B1 Racing Extreme Pro Mod driver Josh Hernandez this weekend as he attempts to break into the top eight as he competes in the Summit Racing Equipment Ohio Drags V at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio.

At the conclusion of the last ADRL event two weeks ago, Hernandez had fallen into ninth place – a mere 24 points out of his team’s chance to represent the country of Bahrain in the ADRL’s Battle for the Belts. The Ohio Drags are the last race to earn points for the event.

“We’re ready,” Hernandez stated confidently. “The past few days I’ve been extremely anxious to get up here to Norwalk to put it all on the table and get the racing started.

“There’s no denying we’ve had a tough year. This weekend is really important to the whole team, not only to get into the Battle for the Belts, but also because we know we’ve finally got this car running great, and we want to prove it.

Elma, NY – Last month Mike Janis wheeled his Eaton Aeroquip backed Pro Modified Mustang to the winner’s circle in the new legal Pro Mod class at the ADRL Speedtech U.S. Drags IV. This weekend he’ll look to be the new classes first two time winner as well as a double class winner, while running in Pro Modified and Pro Extreme in his Jan-Cen/AJPE Duster.

“Getting back to the winner’s circle in Virginia was great,” said team owner/driver, Mike Janis. “We love the ADRL format and the ability to run two classes. I could think of nothing better than winning in both classes at a race so close to home,” added Janis.

Summit Raceway Park in Norwalk, Ohio is just under four hours from Janis’ Elma, NY shop. Many of Janis’ friends, family, and fans from Western New York are expected to be making the trip to cheer on Janis and his team.

CONCORD, NC – Capitalizing on an unseasonably cool September weekend at zMax Dragway, located just outside of Charlotte, NC, Roy Hill and teammate Grant Lewis qualified numbers one and two in Super Stock and Hill once again took home the Super Stock / A Automatic trophy at the 4th annual O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals.

Driving the James Finch-owned Phoenix Racing 2010 Ford Mustang Cobra Jets, Lewis and Hill posted qualifying elapsed times of 8.432 and 8.480 seconds respectively, well under the 9.70 class index. The numbers, along with Lewis’ top speed of 161.96 MPH, were also new track and national records.

“Charlotte was a great outing for us,” Hill said. “We debuted our new Roush Yates engines, and they were tremendous. We also had Coca-Cola on the quarter panels of both cars, along with a large group from both Coca-Cola corporate and Coca-Cola Bottling Company Consolidated, so to run as well as we did in front of everyone was a great thing.”

Williamson & Gore Motorsports Team look for drag racing ‘Hail Mary’ at Bakersfield

Campbell, CA – If you have been anywhere near or watched a high-school, college, or NFL football game – you know the moment well. Behind on the scoreboard, time running out, and the Quarterback drops back to a throw a long, last minute pass to the end zone in the hopes that someone, anyone on his team will reach up amongst the outstretched arms of defenders to pull down the game-winning or tying touchdown.

For Bret Williamson, driver of the Williamson & Gore Motorsports Team ‘53 West Coast Outlaw Pro Mod Association (WCOPMA) Studebaker, this weekend (September 23-25) in Bakersfield, CA represents the drag racing equivalent of football’s ‘Hail Mary’ pass.

Williamson currently sits in 3rd place (behind both Rod Burbage and Marc Meadors) in the WCOPMA standings, but still has a slim mathematical chance of catching points leader Burbage IF he can qualify at the top of the 8-car qualified field, WIN the race and the ever consistent Burbage goes out early in competition. Like the team trailing at the end of the football game, the cards and odds are indeed stacked against Williamson and his hard working team, but that isn’t diminishing his optimism or hope he can pull off a shocking comeback.

Bakersfield, CA – It is finally here, the final event of the 2011 West Coast Outlaw Pro Mod Association’s schedule is this weekend (September 23-25) at the historic Auto Club Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield, California. This season ending event is guaranteed to be filled with action as 12 of the quickest and fastest pro mod cars on the west coast will be in attendance.

Other than just the killer pre entry list, the 2011 champion will be decided during this event and the race is on between the current point’s leader (and 2x WCOPMA champion) Rod Burbage, Marc Meadors and Bret Williamson. Behind Burbage by just a mere 29 points is Marc Meadors and his “Pure Hell 2” 1969 Camaro. Last year’s champion is only 33 points behind Meadors and a total of 62 points out of first place and that would be Bret Williamson in the Williamson and Gore Racing 1953 Studebaker.
