Coughlin, JEGS.com Dodge finish runner-up in return to Pro Stock

POMONA, CA – Jeg Coughlin Jr. might have a new car, new engine and a new team, but his reputation as the toughest out in the NHRA is exactly the same as before he took a one-year hiatus.

Coughlin and the JEGS.com/Mopar Dodge Avenger finished runner-up to Greg Anderson on Sunday at the season opening NHRA Winternationals, his first race back following a year away from the pro ranks.

“I did feel like I drove well this weekend,” Coughlin said. “But the team I have behind me gives me a lot of confidence. That’s worth a lot behind the wheel.”

Anderson left second but had enough muscle to work around Coughlin and turn on the win light in the final. Anderson crossed the finish line in 6.549 seconds at 210.87 mph, while Coughlin finished in 6.586 seconds at 209.62 mph.

Coughlin, who was the No. 14 qualifier, beat Ronnie Humphrey, Vincent Nobile and Mike Edwards on his march to the finals against Anderson.

“Coming into the day, we feel like we had the performance to be a dark horse,” Coughlin said. “We hadn’t quite hit our stride through the first three rounds of qualifying, and when we came out with that 6.58 (second pass) with that first run, we weren’t far off from the quickest guy. We felt like we could peck away it and put ourselves in position to go a few more rounds and maybe win a race today.”

Despite rain, Coughlin makes field for Season-opening Winternationals

POMONA, CA – Jeg Coughlin Jr.’s return to Pro Stock racing at the NHRA Winternationals hasn’t been flashy so far, but the JEGS.com/Mopar Dodge Avenger is in Sunday’s elimination field in the No. 14 spot with good data to work from.

“We’ve made progress,” Coughlin said. “Are we where we wanted to be going into game day at the first Pomona? No. I don’t think we are. But I’m also not disappointed about it. We found the things that have hampered our performance along the way.”

Qualifying for the race was cut to just three sessions after torrential rains hit Auto Club Raceway at Pomona on Saturday afternoon. Coughlin and the car struggled in the first two rounds before running a 6.637-second pass at 209.20 mph in the third and final session.

“We were looking to cut halfway into the number of where we were and the No. 1 qualifier’s time,” Coughlin said. “Our goal in Q3 was to just get it to the other end. We had a more aggressive setup in the car for Round 4, but we didn’t get to run it.

HALTON HILLS, ON – With his first season of Pro Modified Racing Association racing behind him, Jay Santos will be taking to the track with a new car for 2012, another G-Force Race Cars built 69 Camaro.

“A good opportunity came along to sell the car and build a new one,” Santos explained. “The new car will be lighter with the use of titanium, and be able to race more competitively within all sanctioning bodies”

While the new car will be similar to his last car, Santos said the engine program will be improved to better fit the rules of the PMRA. In an effort to have a more consistent car, Santos

will retain the service of tuner and G-Force Race Cars owner Jim Salemi. Santos said he will also implement an auto shifter to shift the Lencodrive torque converter set up.

“I just think there is more consistency with the automatic shifter,” he said. “You let the car shift at the prescribed rpm and hopefully make better runs.”

Perkins is Ready for Season Opening Test at Pomona

Courtesy of 801

Pomona, CA – Cody Perkins comes to the Winternationals prepared to make the grade. Last year’s season ending event did not exactly go as planned. The images of a wild ride filled with smoke and a banged up race car were replayed all winter long. Now that the 2012 NHRA season is here, Perkins is looking to create new memories from the Auto Club Raceway.

“The last time we were here at Pomona there was something exciting every time down the track,” said Perkins. “We never had a boring run.”

Cody and the 801 Racing Team are now looking for boring, as in boringly consistent quick trips down the quarter mile.  The off season has allowed time to review and sharpen the lesson plan. They have studied last year’s data, and are ready for the first exam of the new racing season.
