Whiteleys Double up again in Tulsa

Written by Todd Veney/Pro Sportsman Association

Tulas, OK – In a performance even more impressive than their sweep of the Las Vegas race earlier this year, the husband-and-wife team of Jim and Annie Whiteley ran the table at the Lucas Oil Series regional event at Tulsa Raceway Park. This time, both ran low e.t. in the final, Jim a 5.34 for the Top Alcohol Dragster title and Annie a 5.67 for the win in Top Alcohol Funny Car.

Jim, who already was in a commanding position for the national championship in Top Alcohol Dragster, scored for the fifth time in seven starts this year and completed a perfect regional season with his third victory, stopping Randy Meyer in the final. Meyer, who edged him for the No. 1 qualifying spot, went up in smoke not far off the line and coasted to a 7.21 at 137 mph.

“Randy’s car has been running well wherever he goes – I don’t care what the conditions have been,” Whiteley said. “I’m trying not to think too much about the championship at this point. Our goal was to win this race, and we did it.

Mercier wins TA/D; Lourie takes TA/FC for the 2nd straight year

East Nassau, NY – At the Lucas Oil Series Eastern Regional at Lebanon Valley Dragway in scenic upstate New York, Canadian Dan Mercier won Top Alcohol Dragster on Rich McPhillips’ foul and Eric Lourie ran steady 5.70s on a tricky surface to claim the Top Alcohol Funny Car title.

Mercier and McPhillips, the top two qualifiers, had run within hundredths of a second of each other throughout eliminations until the final, where McPhillips took off too soon for a -.248 foul while Mercier scored with his slowest run of the day, 5.51. “I saw him so far out in front of me, and I said to myself, ‘Impossible,” because I knew that I had a good reaction time,” said Mercier, of LaPrairie, Quebec. “I heard yelling over the radio, but I couldn’t tell for sure what they were saying, so I just stayed on it to the end, just to be sure.”

It was Mercier’s first final-round appearance in exactly a year, since he had virtually the same e.t. and same reaction time that won this year’s final in a close 5.52-5.51 holeshot loss to Dan Page here last year. Mercier was within three-thousandths of a second of both his reaction time and his e.t. from the 2011 final, but it proved irrelevant when McPhillips, who qualified No. 1 with the only run all weekend in the 5.30s, lurched off the line too soon.

Quarterfinal finish highlights Troy Coughlin Jr.’s Ultimate 64 weekend

CLAY CITY, KY – Chasing a massive $50,000 first-place prize at the seventh annual Ultimate 64 Shootout presented by JEGS, Troy Coughlin Jr., managed a respectable quarterfinal finish that boosted his confidence level and left him hungry for more success.

“My car was strong and I drove good so I’m happy about that but when you get that close to a win and don’t finish the job, you always want more,” Coughlin said. “I was having a pretty good day until I red-lighted by .002 seconds against Lester Adkins, who went on to be the runner-up. When that happens, you leave the track thinking about what might have been. I just needed to win three more rounds and I could have been the guy holding the big check but that’s how it goes sometimes.”

In addition to his quarterfinal finish in the main event, Coughlin also drove his JEGS.com dragster to a Round 4 finish in one of the weekend’s $10,000-to-win races and a couple other second round showings during the event, which was held at Mountain Park Dragway in Clay City, Ky.

Dinwiddie, VA – The American Drag Racing League made its return to Virginia Motorsports Park for the U.S. Drags V and was greeted with a deluge of extreme conditions. First round of qualifying the temperatures were on the extreme end of the scale but despite these Kevin Bealko in his competition debut with a clutch, was able to qualify the 2011 GXP in ninth position while John Delforian, Jr. in the 2012 Camaro ended up in the sixteenth position .

The second round of qualifying started twelve hours later after several rain showers and a temperature drop of almost twenty degrees John was able to improve his time while Kevin wiggled down the track but unfortunately the other teams also improved their elapsed times bumping both cars out of the field . Rain ended any more qualifying sessions for friday night and the team went to work prepping both cars for the final qualifying session on Saturday.

Cayuga, ON – It didn’t take Paul Noakes and Crew Chief Les Mellows long to make their mark in the NDRA Alcohol Funny Car Series presented by Ohsweken Speedway. With bracket car like consistency, Noakes and Mellows put on a dominating performance to claim the event title and grab both the series elapsed time and mile per hour records.

The Meritor Driveforce/Euclid sponsored team laid down a 5.67 in the first round, followed by a 5.70 in the semi-finals and capped the weekend off with a 5.69 in the final round to defeat Cicero, New York native Brian White in his White’s Auto Speed/Freeman Farms Dodge Avenger. “Wow, ya, times were tough and everyone thought we had it covered but I’ll tell you, it took a lot of work,” said an ecstatic Noakes “It’s all up to my crew guy’s and Crew Chief and they’re the best in the business and I can’t thank them enough.”

Of course, Noakes couldn’t do what he does without a great support system in place. “I can’t go without mentioning my sponsors, Meritor Driveforce, Euclid, Harman Heavy Vehicle Specialists and Dr. Rondeau, I got to thank everybody. And I’ve also got to thank the NDRA for putting a great package together, with some great cars and I can really see this series growing like crazy.”
