As Sunday eliminations rolled around, their hot rod just had too much power for the hot racetrack, falling to Brian Harvanek.

“We tried some new things in qualifying and switched back for eliminations. The conditions for first round were unlike those we had on the good qualifying run. We just overpowered the track,” said Simonton.

The tire-smoking-hot weekend started with qualifying on Friday afternoon, when the car started to go into tire shake before half-track. The Chevy Monte Carlo funny car smoked the tires early in the run on Saturday, leaving Cassie and crew chief Randy Anderson with one shot to get into a tough field.

NORWALK, OH – Following a quarterfinal finish in this weekend’s B’Laster Cavalcade of Stars event in Norwalk, Ohio, Mike Coughlin has officially earned his spot as the Top Sportsman representative for the North Central Division JEGS Allstars team.

Coughlin entered the event with a two-round lead in the standings and maintained his edge by advancing to the third round of eliminations with his JEGS.com Chevy Cobalt. Despite a tough loss there, Coughlin was able to celebrate a few moments later when John Scali and Ricky Adkins, the last two drivers who could catch him, were also eliminated.

“I would love to have won this race but I really wanted to make sure I got into the JEGS Allstars and we did that. Now, I can make my plans for Joliet,” Coughlin said. “It was pretty intense there for a while. After I lost, I opened the door and I could hear [NHRA announcer Leo Taugher] say that John Scali had red-lighted. Then I watched Ricky Adkins get beat and I knew it was a done deal. I haven’t raced in the JEGS Allstars in 15 years and I’m excited to go back. It’s such an honor just to make the team.”

Bristol Spring Fling 20’s a good learning experience for Troy Coughlin Jr.

Courtesy of Jegs

BRISTOL, TN – For Troy Coughlin Jr., racing against the toughest drivers in the nation at this weekend’s K&N Spring Fling 20’s at Bristol Dragway was the perfect way to continue his education on the finer points of E.T. bracket racing.

Although wasn’t able to get his hands on one of the $20,000 top prizes, the third-generation racer did manage a respectable Round 4 finish in Sunday’s final event. More importantly, he believes the experience and knowledge he gained was priceless.

“I learned so much this weekend,” Coughlin said. “I try to learn something new every time I’m at the track but this weekend was different. Tony Collier [veteran JEGS crew member] wasn’t here with me and I decided to take more responsibility for setting my dial-in. Bristol Dragway is a fantastic track but it’s very tricky because it’s surrounded by mountains and the wind swirls and the temperature can change very quickly. You really have to stay on your toes. I made some mistakes this weekend but I also learned a lot that will help me at future events. No matter what, I plan to take a more active role in dialing-in this car from now on.”
