Forster nearly doubles up at IHRA World Finals

Courtesy of IHRA

NORWALK, OH – Sometimes it is best being the man everyone least suspects.  Just ask Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native Patrick Forster.

Sure Forster had a formidable resume already entering the 2012 Summit Racing Equipment Tournament of Champions presented by AMSOIL, but his 2012 performance left little to strike fear in the competition, at least in the world of Hot Rod. Yes Forster was one of only six drivers to qualify for the tournament in two different classes, but he barely managed to sneak into the field in Hot Rod and looked as if the only class in which he stood a real chance at success was in Quick Rod.

As it turns out, both were to his liking.

With no real expectations and a “see what happens” attitude, Forster went 9-1 on race day and reached the final in both classes, winning the Hot Rod World Championship and finishing runner-up in Quick Rod. While Forster wasn’t able to complete the historical championship sweep, his performance in the tournament proved that Forster is a dangerous racer and that he has picked up quite a bit of racing prowess from his friend and teammate, 2012 IHRA Sportsman Driver of the Year Jacob Elrod.

Johnson Hits Jackpot with Vegas Victory, All But Clinches Title Heading to Pomona

Las Vegas, NV – For NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Pro Stock driver Allen Johnson, the dream the Mopar Dodge Avenger driver has harbored for 17 years is so close he can almost touch the championship trophy, almost taste the champagne. The key word: Almost.

Johnson emerged triumphant in a Mopar final-round duel on Sunday at the NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, knocking out teammate Vincent Nobile to earn a sweep of both 2012 NHRA Vegas events. It is his sixth victory of the season and 15th Pro Stock win of his career. Most importantly, Johnson is now 126 points ahead of the second-place Jason Line — the Team Mopar veteran needs only to qualify at the season-ending NHRA Finals in Pomona, Calif., to clinch his first title.

And as strong as the day was for Johnson, it was even better for Mopar. The brand celebrated not one, but two Pro class wins at Vegas, as Ron Capps defeated fellow Dodge Charger R/T driver Jack Beckman in an all-Mopar Funny Car final. The Don Schumacher Racing (DSR) duo are 1-2 in the points standings, with Capps now just four points behind Beckman in the chase for the Funny Car championship — giving Mopar the distinct possibility of dual championship celebrations at Pomona.

Troy Coughlin adds to family legacy by capturing 2012 Pro Mod championship

Courtesy of Jegs

LAS VEGAS, NV – Veteran driver Troy Coughlin faced long odds of winning his first NHRA championship at the start of this weekend’s 12th annual Big O Tires NHRA Nationals, and he made the ultimate gamble by switching to a brand-new racecar before the race began. Now, he’s part of drag racing immortality.

After winning the last race in St. Louis, Coughlin found himself 42 points behind Pro Mod class leader Mike Castellana in third place. Although the racecar he had been driving got him to that point, Coughlin decided to switch to a 2013 Corvette in an last-ditch effort to gain two-plus rounds of racing with only four left on the table.

Needing everything to fall into place, Coughlin expertly rode his new mount to a second consecutive victory that ultimately earned him the NHRA Pro Mod Series presented by ProCare Rx title by the slenderest of margins.

LAS VEGAS, NV – Jeg Coughlin Jr. made it to the second round on Sunday at the Big O Tires NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, ruining an old rival’s plans in the process.

Coughlin and the JEGS.com/Mopar Dodge Avenger were paired with Greg Anderson in the first round. For the last couple of races,Andersonhad been laying back during qualifying to try and get an early matchup against Pro Stock points leader Allen Johnson.

That strategy was working as the winner of the Coughlin-Anderson matchup would indeed get Johnson in the second round, but the lower-seeded Coughlin was not going to be an easy out.

“I was happy with the car for the most part,” Coughlin said. “We’re running well. We’re in the top handful in 60-foot times and lately we’re working our way down the page.”

LAS VEGAS, NV – Jeg Coughlin Jr. qualified 10th for Sunday’s eliminations at the Big O Tires NHRA Nationals and was thrust right into some of the intrigue swirling around the Pro Stock championship battle at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Coughlin’s best lap so far at the 12th annual Big O Tires NHRA Nationals was in 6.647 seconds at 207.02 mph.

“We had a good effort,” Coughlin said. “We had our hopes up that some advancements we planned on having would work, but it didn’t pan out the way we wanted them to. We made three good runs out of four, and looking back, we think we could have been a little more aggressive on the last run.

“On the whole, we’ve got good data for tomorrow. We’d rather be on the lane choice side of things, but fortunately both lanes here are pretty good.”
