Danny Rowe Remains in Pro Mod Top 5 after Semifinal Finish in Houston

LAGUNA HILLS, CA – Despite a valiant effort, a three-peat at the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Spring Nationals wasn’t meant to be for Danny RoweDanny Rowe, driver of the Agave Underground Pro Modified Camaro, who qualified second and made it through to the semifinal round at Royal Purple Raceway near Houston.

Using an impressive 5.930-second, 246.53mph quarter-mile blast to take the No. 2 qualifying spot, Rowe met Chip King in the opening stanza. After dispatching King, Rowe faced fellow supercharged racer, Von Smith, in the second round, where he utilized a near-perfect reaction time and 6.026-second, 245.90mph effort to best Smith’s 6.065/242.84 combination to move onto a semifinal round matchup with Kenny Lang. Lang was off the starting line first by a narrow margin, and used that early advantage to hold off the hard-charging Agave Underground Pro Mod and take the win with a 6.001-second, 246.26mph pass over Rowe’s quicker but losing 5.980/246.44 performance.

Atlanta Dragway a favorite stop for five-time world champion Coughlin

ATLANTA, GA – The week when the Mello Yello NHRA Drag Racing Series visits Atlanta is always a special one for five-time world Jeg Coughlin Jrchampion Jeg Coughlin Jr. Not only is Coughlin a former winner at Atlanta Dragway, making him as anxious as ever to hit the quarter-mile strip, his status as a past series champion has additional perks.

“I’m really looking forward to the week in Atlanta, beginning with the Champion’s Celebration on Wednesday night at Coca-Cola headquarters,” Coughlin said. “That’s a really neat tradition and it’s one I’m particularly honored to be a part of each year. You definitely walk in that hall and feel special, thanks to the great Southern hospitality the Coca-Cola folks always show us.

“That party sets up a great weekend at a track I always enjoy. It’s one of those tracks I remember going to as a kid and watching my dad race there. I also went there with my older brothers and helped them when they started racing. Later, I was fortunate enough to raise a few Wally’s myself at that track. Atlanta is just a special place for me.”

With two runner-up finishes to his credit, Coughlin and his JEGS.com/Mopar Dodge Avenger race team arrive in the Peach State ranked third in the country. Just a few days ago in Houston, Coughlin’s car was the quickest of the class as he earned his 18th career pole before racing to the semifinals.

Meyer, Bartone Persevere in Houston

Written by Todd Veney/Pro Sportsman Association

Houston, TX – At the rain-plagued NHRA Spring Nationals at water-logged Royal Purple Raceway, Randy Meyer continued his recent Tony Bartoneresurgence in Top Alcohol Dragster and Tony Bartone won his second national event in a row in Top Alcohol Funny Car.

Meyer, a six-time runner-up last season, moved into second place in the national standings behind only Jim Whiteley, whom he beat in the final, 5.36, 271 to a slowing 5.46, 221. “Whiteley’s been kicking my butt for a couple years now,” he said. “He and that whole team are tough and don’t make many mistakes.”

Whiteley led late in the race but the back two blower studs on each side broke, killing the boost and allowing Meyer, who crossed the finish line going 50 mph faster, to zoom by for his fourth career title and first since the 2007 Gatornationals. “He wasn’t pulling away from me, and I wasn’t catching him either, but somewhere between half-track and 1,000 feet he dropped back fast, and instead of coming up a little short like we did so many times last year, we got the win,” Meyer said. “We didn’t beat ourselves for a change.”

Demke Out Early in Houston

BAYTOWN, TX – Maddern Racing, a team usually very capable of powering through to success in the face of adversity, was unable to Chris Demketurn a #2 qualifying position into late-round results at the rain-plagued O’Reilly Spring Nationals in Houston last weekend. A variety of problems came together to set the Top Alcohol Dragster team back a step.

Knowing they were short a qualifying session going into the race, the team set the car up to make a strong yet conservative pass during Friday’s sole qualifying session. Driver Chris Demke piloted the Peen Rite/OSI/801 Racing dragster to the second qualifying position, 5.36 at 264 mph, sitting behind rival Jim Whiteley.

“It was tough having only one qualifying session, but every other team was in the same situation. The track condition was vastly different from qualifying on Friday to eliminations on Sunday morning. After Friday’s qualifying run, we had the car set up aggressively, anticipating better conditions for Saturday’s qualifying session. Unfortunately it rained all day Saturday,” Demke said.

Tough Track Conditions Yields Disappointment for Mopar at NHRA Spring Nationals

Houston, TX –  Tricky conditions at Royal Purple Raceway near Houston proved to be a bit more of a challenge for the Mopar Moparcontingency than was expected for the 26th annual NHRA SpringNationals presented by Super Start Batteries. The semifinals were as far as Pro Stock’s No. 1 qualifier Jeg Coughlin Jr. and Funny Car driver Ron Capps got for Mopar, bringing a streak of 13 wins in 11 events, dating back to September 2012, to an end.

The rain that fell and washed out most of qualifying on Saturday continued through the night and proceeded to wash away much of the rubber that had been laid on the racetrack. That made track conditions for eliminations an unknown entity with lack of traction becoming a concern for all sending teams scrambling to make adjustments to their car set-ups in order to compensate.
