Troy Coughlin conquers Charlotte, claims Pro Mod victory!

CHARLOTTE, NC – Defending NHRA Pro Mod champion Troy Coughlin rebounded from a disappointing opening to the 2013 season Troy Coughlin, PM - Charlottewith a dominating performance Sunday in the Dollar General 4-Wide Nationals at zMax Dragway.

Coughlin qualified his JEGS.com Corvette well and rode a hot tune-up all the way to victory lane, beating Kenny Lang in the final round.

“Charlotte’s such a great place to race, no doubt,” Coughlin said. “The JEGS.com car was rocking and rolling all weekend. I’ve got my family with me, and I couldn’t be more excited, no doubt.”

Things simply don’t fall into place for Coughlin in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, NC – Jeg Coughlin Jr.’s quest to win a drag race under the unique 4-wide format used at this weekend’s Dollar General JegJr-ProStockNHRA Nationals will have to wait another year as the five-time world champion came up a couple rounds short Sunday at zMax Dragway.

As usual, Coughlin crushed the Christmas Tree in his race against Jason Line, Rodger Brogdon and Lewis Worden, recording an almost perfect .005-second reaction time. But as the JEGS.com/Mopar Dodge Avenger led the way down the track it suddenly became very loose, forcing him to do some fancy driving just to avoid crashing. Ultimately, the maneuvering cost him a chance to advance as his 6.722-second pass at 211.66 mph ended up being fourth quickest of his quad.

Line (6.499 seconds) and Brogdon (6.612) were the two men that advanced to the semifinals.

Shortened Qualifying Provides Mixed Results for Mopar at Four-Wide Nationals

Concord, NC   Mopar drivers in both Pro Stock and Funny Car classes had just two runs to make their mark in qualifying for this Moparweekend’s fourth annual Dollar General NHRA Four-Wide Nationals, after rain washed out Friday’s sessions at Charlotte Motor Speedway’s zMAX Dragway. Those two passes left little room for error and had mixed results for Mopar entries in both classes as they prepared for Sunday’s contest.

The unique Four-Wide Nationals format for Sunday’s eliminations will see the field of 16 qualifiers in each class split into four waves of drag racing (instead of the usual eight) for the opening round.  With competitors facing-off simultaneously in four lanes, the top two finishers of each round will advance. As a result, only three eliminations rounds will be necessary, with the final run determining the winner, runner-up and two semi-finalists.

Pro Mod champ Coughlin wins first round race, looks to Sunday

CHARLOTTE, FL – Reigning Pro Mod champion Troy Coughlin used his best pass of the weekend Saturday afternoon to beat Chip King Troy Coughlin - Charlotteand advance to the quarterfinals of the Dollar General NHRA Nationals at zMax Dragway.

After qualifying No. 5 with a 5.963-second pass at 243.72 mph — the quickest run of Day 1 action — Coughlin and his JEGS.com crew managed to lower their elapsed time to 5.909 at 248.52 mph in dismissing King. The No. 12 qualifier, King also ran his best pass of the weekend against Coughlin, but his 6.015 at 249.81 mph was well off the pace. Adding to the punishment was Coughlin’s .031-second reaction time advantage.

“That was a big race to win because Chip came in here No. 2 in the points, so he was a guy we need to keep in our sights,” Coughlin said, “especially after our slow start in Gainesville. I think we’ve got the car in a lot better shape. We’ve still got a few little glitches in the electronics but it’s manageable now.”

After qualifying second, Coughlin really enjoying 4-wide racing

CHARLOTTE, NC – Pro Stock ace Jeg Coughlin Jr. took a big step towards winning his first-ever race at zMax Dragway Saturday when he Jeg Coughlin Jr - Charlottelocked down the lofty No. 2 qualifying position for the Dollar General 4-Wide NHRA Nationals.

With qualifying action reduced to Saturday’s two sessions due to Friday’s rain and high winds, Coughlin came through with two great passes in his JEGS.com/Mopar Dodge Avenger. He opened with a 6.511 before lowering his mark to 6.495 at 212.93 mph in the afternoon.

“Things have gone really well,” Coughlin said. “We came in here struggling just a little bit with my car and with the shape of this track here, where it kind of goes uphill for a stretch and then downhill, we thought that would really magnify the issues we’ve been having.

BRADENTON, FL – It has been a long time coming for Bruce Litton at Bradenton Motorsports Park. Nearly 14 years have passed Bruce Littonbetween final round appearances for Litton and his Top Fuel team at the western Florida facility, not because of any lack of performance or team blunders, but because this year marks the International Hot Rod Associations first trip back to Bradenton since 1999.

Mopar Ready to Run Four-Wide at Charlotte

Concord, NC –   While Mopar drivers and teams were ready to run the first two qualifying sessions of this weekend’s fourth annual MoparDollar General NHRA Four-Wide Nationals, Mother Nature had other plans as rain and inclement weather forced the cancellation of Friday’s activities at Charlotte Motor Speedway’s zMAX Dragway. A little drag racing déjà vu for Bailey, Litton at Bradenton

BRADENTON, FL – Sun, sand and beautiful beaches, that is the life for former Top Fuel pilot Jim Bailey. After decades behind the wheel Jim Baileyof anything that would go fast, Bailey finally hung up his helmet and gloves for good just a few years back. Years of 300 mile-per-hour passes and hundreds of earth-shattering runs would finally be replaced with the much slower, much calmer joy of life at the beach.

Now was the time for rest and relaxation.

So in 2010, after nearly two decades of vacationing on the Gulf Coast and with dozens of threats that one day he would retire to the Bay area, Bailey finally did. Tired of the cold and dreary conditions in Ohio, Bailey packed up and headed south with his lovely new bride and planted his flag in the town of Bradenton, Ohio, far from his old drag racing stomping grounds.
