KALITTA LEADS TOYOTA IN LAS VEGAS NHRA QUALIFYING

LAS VEGAS, NV – Doug Kalitta qualified third in Top Fuel to lead Toyota in preparation for Sunday’s Denso Spark Plugs NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

After a tough first day of qualifying as track conditions played havoc with the field, Kalitta topped Saturday’s first Top Fuel session with a 3.765 second pass and then was second in the final session with his best run of the weekend – a 3.756. He earned five of a possible six bonus points on the day. In addition, he’s now qualified in the top three in three of the season’s first four races and in the top five in every race to date in 2017.

“That was a great finish today by the Mac Tools Toyota boys,” said Kalitta, who will match up with Steve Chrisman in Sunday’s opening round of eliminations. “This machine was strong all day, and that gives me a lot of confidence for tomorrow.”

Troy Coughlin placed seventh to give Kalitta Motorsports a pair of Top Fuel cars in the top seven, while Antron Brown qualified eighth to make it three Toyota-sponsored dragsters in the top half of the field.

In Funny Car, teammates Alexis DeJoria and J.R. Todd ran identical 3.936-second passes to take the eighth and ninth positions, with DeJoria earning the higher seed based on speed (327.27 mph). The two Camry drivers will square off in Sunday’s first round. Cruz Pedregon finished 12th, while Del Worsham will start from the 15th spot.

Sunday’s NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series eliminations will be shown live on FS1 beginning at 6:00 p.m. (EDT).
