KALITTA EARNS 600th ROUND WIN AS TOP TOYOTA AT ATLANTA NHRA

PLANO, TX – Doug Kalitta earned his 600th career round win as he advanced to the Top Fuel semi-finals to lead Toyota at the Lucas Oil NHRA Southern Nationals at the Atlanta Dragway, Sunday.

Kalitta defeated Chris Karamesines and Clay Millican before falling to Tony Schumacher in the semi-finals. In the semis, Kalitta had the advantage at the starting line before hazing the tires around the 400-foot mark. He reached the 600-win milestone with his second-round victory over Millican.

“It was very cool to hit such a big number of round wins with this Mac Tools Toyota team,” relayed Kalitta.”I would have loved to take the win today, but it was not meant to be. We are running strong and I look forward to Topeka in a couple weeks.”

Antron Brown and Shawn Langdon each advanced to the second round before being eliminated. Brown defeated fellow Toyota driver Troy Coughlin Jr. in the first round with a 3.702-second pass to set up a quarter-final match-up with point leader Leah Pritchett. Brown took the advantage at the light, but couldn’t hold off Pritchett despite running the third-lowest time of the round (3.754), with Pritchett’s margin of victory at 0.0157 seconds or approximately eight feet.

Langdon earned his first round win as a member of Kalitta Motorsports with a victory over Pat Dakin in his opening run, but was eliminated by eventual winner Steve Torrence in the second round. Langdon has now closed to within approximately six rounds of the final Countdown to the Championship playoff berth despite missing the season’s first four races.

Each of the four Toyota Funny Cars was eliminated in the opening round as Chad Head, Del Worsham, J.R. Todd and Cruz Pedregon all went down in their opening runs. Head’s Tequila Patrón Toyota Camry Funny Car was the top Toyota Funny Car driver this weekend, registering the quickest time in each of the three sessions.

The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series resumes in Topeka, Kansas, with the Menards NHRA Heartland Nationals, May 22-24.
