JON CAPPS PROGRESSIVELY IMPROVING AFTER ATLANTA

Commerce, GA – After completing his fifth career National Hot Rod Association Full Throttle Series race day start this past weekend at Atlanta Dragway, Jon Capps, driving for the Paul Smith Racing / Biesenbach Inc. Monte Carlo Funny Car team, is  progressively improving and remains upbeat following a first round loss to the current NHRA Funny Car point leader, Mike Neff.

“We came here to compete, not just qualify and today Neff was just a taste better than us,” said Capps, the Las Vegas, Nev. resident who qualified in the number 11 position and recorded a career best elapsed time and speed during the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals. “We learned quite a bit during the weekend, but had some issues taming what was a very tricky right hand lane. I felt like I had a good light (reaction time) and the car was charging pretty hard in the first 60 feet, but about 300 feet into the run it started to rattle the tires and smoked the hoops. By the time I caught it, Neff had zipped by me to take the win.”

Indeed, Capps did capture a considerable starting line reaction time advantage of nearly four hundredths of a second against Neff. In the five races he has competed in the NHRA Full Throttle Series, Capps has shown his quick reaction times and gained the starting line advantage each time. But, in the high-horsepower sport of NHRA drag racing, they race to 1,000 feet, and on this day, the Castrol GTX Mustang was 700 feet better than the Smith Racing Monte Carlo.

“I have to take my hat off to that guy, (Neff) he is tuning and driving his own car which is rare in today’s era,” stated Capps, tuned by Paul Smith, who himself tuned and drove the extremely popular ‘Entertainer’ Funny Car and several other cars before starting the Paul Smith School of Drag Racing. “It is never fun to lose a race, but the important thing is to learn from every run down the track. With each pass, and with Paul’s input, I really feel we can compete at this level.”

Capps also was thankful for the support from several industry leading companies such as Biesenbach Inc., Bexar Waste, Hedman Hussler, Valvoline, Fram/Autolite, Rock Batteries, Boninfante Performance Clutch Parts and grinders and new for this event Xtoursonline.com.

“We had a rag-tag crew of professionals helping us this weekend and I was very impressed with the synergy and how smooth they worked together,” Capps concluded. “I want to thank each of the guys who came out here to help out Paul’s team this weekend. Also, once again to David Biesenbach at Biesenbach Inc. (http://www.biesenbach.com), the team at Hedman Hussler (http://www.hedman.com) and all of our marketing partners who continue to provide the Paul Smith Racing team with amazing support.”

Capps return to the seat of the Jungle Jim Tribute Nitro Nostalgia Funny Car of Bexar Waste owner Henry Gutierrez at several booked in events in the upcoming months. Capps has his sights on more opportunities to drive the Paul Smith Racing Monte Carlo Funny Car later this season.
