Dom Lagana to drive a second CatSpot Top Fuel dragster in Richmond

NORTH DINWIDDIE, VA – Veteran Top Fuel ace Dom Lagana will wheel a second CatSpot Organic Cat Litter Top Fuel dragster in NHRA’s return to Virginia Motorsports Park this weekend for the Virginia Nationals.

Lagana will serve as a teammate to CatSpot Organic Cat Litter driver Scott Palmer.

“It’s going to be real exciting,” Lagana said. “It’s only our second race out this year, and we’ve got the new car again. I’m excited. Any weekend you can come out and go racing is a good one, you know?”

Lagana debuted a new Morgan Lucas Racing-built chassis at Charlotte earlier this year, showing plenty of promise with the car. With more data available from Palmer and his new crew chief, Jason McCulloch, Lagana hopes to build on the Charlotte race and compete with the best in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series.

“It would be nice to lay a couple good low-.80 or high-.70 runs down if the track will take it,” Lagana said. “We made some good progress with the new car in Charlotte. We made one run that would’ve been in the high-.70s, so we’ll build off of that and see what the weather conditions do.

“Of course, it’d be good to get out there on Sunday to take out a couple guys for Scott for the points. We’ll see what we can do.”

NHRA returns to Richmond for the first time since 2009, meaning Lagana and his part-time team will be on equal footing with the other established Top Fuel teams. Plus, Virginia Motorsports Park was resurfaced in the off-season, so every team will be making its first pass on Friday.

“They re-did the track surface here, and it came out real good,” Lagana said. “But still, nobody has the data to look back on the runs in years’ past like other tracks. These guys are so good, they’ll get it figured out on the first or second run.

“We’ll keep to our own plan and try and get an A-to-B run to start the weekend and build from there. We’ll see how hot the track is, too. Looks like it might be a little warm.”

Top Fuel qualifying sessions are scheduled for 4 and 6:30 p.m., Friday, and 1:30 and 4 p.m., Saturday. Eliminations begin at noon, Sunday. FOX Sports 1 will carry qualifying action live from 2:30-5 p.m., Saturday. Eliminations will air on FOX Sports 1 from 6-8:30 p.m., Sunday. (All times are local and subject to change.)
