Davis Begins 2012 Top Sportsman Campaign

Written by Ian Tocher

SUWANEE, GA — He’s been drag racing for more than 40 years now, but Top Sportsman competitor Ronnie “The King” Davis is showing no signs of letting up as he opens an ambitious 2012 schedule this weekend with a trip to Orlando Speed World Dragway for the NHRA Division 2 season opener.

Just one week later, the Suwanee, Georgia-based golf cart dealer will attend another Division 2 race Feb. 17-19, also in Florida at Gainesville Raceway, and after a weekend off to regroup he’ll compete in a third NHRA Div. 2 event Mar. 2-4, at South Georgia Motorsports Park, which will feature the special-event Davis Golf Cart Sales Top Sportsman Shootout on Saturday night.

“I’ve never missed an NHRA Division 2 Top Sportsman race since we started holding them,” says Davis, whose business also serves as the divisional title sponsor for the class he helped develop and implement in 2002 with retired Div. 2 director, Bill Holt. “And there’s nothing I’d like better than to win another NHRA championship at the end of the year,” the two-time past Div. 2 champion adds.

Davis will race his Tommy Mauney-built ’63 Corvette fitted with a nitrous-injected, Roush Yates 738-cubic-inch engine at the quarter-mile NHRA events, but will pull out a second Mauney ’63 Vette powered by an 822 c.i. nitrous-boosted Roush Yates motor for the ADRL’s first eighth-mile Top Sportsman race of the year Mar. 30-31, near Houston, Texas.

“One of my big goals for 2012 is to win the ADRL championship,” Davis declares. “I’d love to be the first to win Top Sportsman championships in NHRA, IHRA (5 times) and ADRL, and with this being the first year ADRL will name a Top Sportsman champion, that would make it extra special, too.”

And though Davis heads into this season with the same tried-and-true cars he raced last year, he did make a major change to his team, adding John Collins as a second crew member to longtime assistant Pete March.

“John is a diesel tech who just got out after spending four years in the U.S. Army, so he should bring some good discipline with him and I feel like it’s an honor to have him on my team,” Davis said. “John will be assisting Pete and learning from him with the eventual goal that I’ll have two guys who know both the golf cart business and what to do at the race track, so I think he’s going to be a real asset. I’m excited about 2012 and looking forward to having a good year.”

Ronnie Davis Racing greatly appreciates the sponsorship and support of Roush Yates Performance Engine Group, Rock Batteries, J.H. Global Star Golf Carts, Hickory Enclosed Trailers & Race Performance Motor Coach, TracStar Satellite Systems, Goodyear, CSR, VP Racing Fuels, TCI, Moroso, Magnaflow, Hedman Hedders, Auto Meter, Torque Converter Services, Braswell Carburetors, MSD, Penske Shocks, Chapman Auto Body, and Tommy Mauney Race Cars.
