Teammates Scott Palmer, Dom Lagana to race one another in Reading eliminations

READING, PA – Teammates Scott Palmer and Dom Lagana made their best qualifying passes in the final session of the 34th annual Dodge NHRA Nationals. But as luck would have it, their hard work resulted in a race day ladder that pits them against one another in Sunday’s opening round of eliminations at Maple Grove Raceway.

Palmer earned a slight advantage for his CatSpot Organic Cat Litter Top Fuel dragster after topping out at 3.779 and 321.19 mph, which placed him seventh on the grid. Lagana’s best pass of 3.792 at 304.19 mph in the Magic Dry 100% Organic Multi-Purpose Absorbent dragster earned him the No. 10 slot overall.

“Track conditions were really good this afternoon and we were both able to run our best ETs so we’re pleased with the performance of both team cars,” Palmer said. “It’s not what you want when you end up on opposite sides of the ladder and have to race each other right out of the gate but we’ll look at the positive side of it and say we’re happy that for sure one of us will be advancing to the second round.”

The CatSpot dragster has been extremely consistent with Palmer posting runs of 3.817, 3.822, 3.820 and 3.779 down the historic drag strip in Pennsylvania’s Dutch Country.

Top Fuel pro Dom Lagana to debut new sponsor, Magic Dry Absorbent, in Reading

READING, PA – Dom Lagana may contest a part-time schedule in the NHRA Top Fuel class, but he definitely has full-time support when he does compete, as he will this weekend in the 34th annual Dodge NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway.

Running as part of Tommy Thompson Motorsports alongside teammate Scott Palmer, Lagana not only has a great new sponsor in Magic Dry 100% Organic Multi-Purpose Absorbent, but he also benefits from a great tuning alliance with the CAPCO race team of points leader Steve Torrence and his father Billy, who recently won in Brainerd.

“We have everything we need and we stay really involved even when we’re not running my car,” Lagana said. “I went on the Western swing to help out on Steve Torrence’s car and then I also worked on Billy Torrence’s car at Brainerd and Indy which was pretty cool because we won Brainerd and went to the semifinals in Indy so it’s been a very busy summer.

“We also had a few match races with our family car in August and we were able to try out a few things in our clutch department to get the car more consistent than we were at Epping, our last NHRA race, so we’re pretty confident we can run well in Reading.”

Scott Palmer plans to run ‘reckless’ in CatSpot dragster as he pursues playoff victories

READING, PA – Entering the NHRA’s six-race Countdown to the Championship playoffs in the 10th and final spot does have one distinct advantage for Scott Palmer — he’s got nothing to lose. It’s a point he plans to prove several times down the stretch run, beginning at this weekend’s 34th annual Dodge NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway.

“For the next six races, we’re going to be more reckless for sure,” Palmer said. “We will be 100-percent aggressive every race instead of constantly looking over our shoulder like we had to do this summer.

“In the Countdown, there are no oil-down penalties so the gloves can come off. We’re going from a strategic boxing match to a street fight. Now we get to just go and race hard and run the cars as hard as we can. It’s gonna be fun.”

Indy ends early for Scott Palmer, but his CatSpot team will run for the title once again

INDIANAPOLIS – For the second year in a row, Scott Palmer has earned a coveted spot in the Countdown to the Championship playoffs for his CatSpot Organic Cat Litter Top Fuel dragster team.

Due to oil pressure issues during his warm-up in the pits and as his team tried to ignite his dragster on the starting line, Palmer elected not to run his first-round race against Terry McMillen despite the fact he had a lot of confidence in his machine.

“Ultimately, we’re leaving Indy in the top 10 so we’ll have a chance to run for the championship and that was our primary goal for the regular season,” Palmer said. “Now we’ll reset our goals, along with the points being reset, and we’ll do everything we can these last six races to win everything we can.

“I’m disappointed in this day because our fans here and really throughout the year have been so supportive and we knew we had a car that could have made a run. We qualified fourth at the U.S. Nationals! I mean, we have a lot of racecar here and I’m convinced we could have made a run today.”

Playing it safe and not making a run with a dodgy oil pressure reading paid dividends in the form of securing Palmer’s place in the Countdown. The playoff pressure was actually relieved a few pairs in front of Palmer’s race when Richie Crampton lost, eliminating his team from contention.

Scott Palmer sits out Sunday’s action to protect playoff position, but still delights his fans

INDIANAPOLIS – Scott Palmer decided to play it safe Sunday and not participate in either of the final two qualifying sessions for the 64th annual Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals. After posting a huge 3.791 at 327.90 mph Friday night and knowing it was too hot to improve on that mark, he kept his CatSpot Organic Cat Litter Top Fuel dragster in the pits. But that didn’t stop him from thrilling the fans.

“There was nothing to gain and a lot to lose so we just decided not to run today,” Palmer said. “But this is the U.S. Nationals, the biggest race of the year, and we’ve had a mob of people waiting all day at our pit to hear us whack the throttle so we fired the car up any way and gave them two whacks. They were going nuts afterwards.”

Palmer’s “throttle whacks” have become legendary amongst NHRA fans. The old-school move helps weld the multi-disc clutch package together and the huge blast from the engine is a very loud thrill for anyone in the vicinity. However, most teams don’t whack the throttle any more, performing a less exciting “grunt” maneuver instead.

Veteran Top Fuel Harley rider Rickey House thrilled for his first U.S. Nationals

INDIANAPOLIS – Rickey House has been drag racing motorcycles for years but it wasn’t until the NHRA added the eight-race Mickey Thompson Tires Top Fuel Harley class to the yearly schedule in 2017 that the humble rider from Humble, Texas, had a chance to race at some of the most historic drag strips in the world.

“Believe it or not, this will be my first time racing at Indy and I’m pretty excited about it,” said House, rider of the CatSpot Organic Cat Litter Top Fuel Harley. “I’ve always wanted to run the U.S. Nationals and now I have a chance to do just that and it’s really cool.

“It’s just like Pomona (Calif.) I always wanted to race at Pomona and now I’ve been there twice and we went to the finals both times only to come up a little short. Maybe the third time racing at one of these legendary tracks will be the charm and I’ll get a win at my first U.S. Nationals. Wouldn’t that
be something?”

Heeding advice of a legend, CatSpot Top Fuel pro Scott Palmer ready for Indy, playoffs

INDIANAPOLIS – Locked in a three-man battle for the last two playoff spots in Top Fuel, Scott Palmer brings his CatSpot Organic Cat Litter Top Fuel dragster team to the 64th annual Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals with firm plans to follow the advice of a drag racing legend.

“Frank Manzo taught me something when I raced with him,” Palmer said of the 105-time national event winner. “He said his racing season always started at Indy and ended in Brainerd. So, basically before Indy every year he started fresh with new cars and new parts.

“Usually by Indy your stuff is getting tired and then you push everything harder at Indy because it’s Indy and then you push it even harder down the stretch because you’re racing for the championship. It really doesn’t make sense to do your most important racing with old stuff.

“So, we are doing this the Frank Manzo way. Instead of testing for Indy, we went back and freshened everything up, replaced a lot of parts with new stuff from Tom Conway, and we’re ready to give this thing our best effort. Frank won so many championships and races. He’s the second winningest driver in NHRA history and he did it because when he got ready to go to Indy, he was starting fresh. We’re following his lead.”

Scott Palmer moves CatSpot dragster into ninth place after big round win in Brainerd

BRAINERD, MN – The final two playoff spots in the Top Fuel category will not be decided for two more weeks but for now the driver in the catbird seat is Scott Palmer, pilot of the CatSpot Organic Cat Litter Top Fuel dragster.

Palmer knocked off title contender Leah Pritchett in the opening round of Sunday’s 37th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals with a stout 3.837 at 325.06 mph to Pritchett’s tire-smoking 4.068 at 276.92 mph, assuring he’d leave town as part of the top 10. That’s the team’s main goal at the moment as only the top 10 drivers advance to the Countdown to the Championship playoffs after the next race in Indianapolis.

“We just have to continue do our own thing,” Palmer said. “The Countdown deal, of course it’s a big thing, but we feel like we found some things this weekend that will help us in Indy and I think we will be ok when the dust settles.

“We definitely have a good race car now. It’s back. We are going to make sure we are 110-percent prepared for Indy and we’ll give them all we got. That’s our plan.”

CatSpot racer Scott Palmer being tested at every turn as regular season winds down

BRAINERD, MN – Drag racers always tend to enjoy the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway, but this year’s event is proving to be a test of Scott Palmer’s mettle as the driver of the CatSpot Organic Cat Litter Top Fuel dragster tries to secure his place in the Countdown to One.

With just tomorrow’s eliminations rounds and one more national event in Indy over Labor Day weekend until the 10-car playoff fields are set, Palmer finds himself in a tight three-way fight for the last two spots with veteran Richie Crampton and upstart Mike Salinas. As it stands, Crampton is in ninth place, just 10 points ahead of Palmer, who in turn is 28 markers in front of 11th-ranked Salinas.

“We’re going to have to earn a spot, for sure, because no one is giving an inch,” Palmer said. “We got Leah and everyone knows that car is usually at the top of the sheets. Salinas is running an (Alan Johnson) combination now and that guy has won more championships than anyone else. Richie is with Kalitta Motorsports.

CatSpot driver Scott Palmer ready to defend his Countdown spot in Brainerd

BRAINERD, MN – CatSpot Organic Cat Litter Top Fuel dragster driver Scott Palmer has been counting points all season, so why stop now, especially with two races before the start of the Countdown to the Championship?

Palmer currently sits 10th in the Top Fuel standings as the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series heads to Brainerd International Raceway for this weekend’s Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals, the next-to-last race before the NHRA “playoffs” begin. He’s 11 points behind ninth-place Richie Crampton and 30 points ahead of 11th-place Mike Salinas.

Only the top 10 in the points standings are eligible for the Countdown, the six-race segment of the season that determines the champions in the four pro classes, so the next two races are critical.

“We are going to Brainerd trying to win the race but we also have to protect our situation too,” Palmer said. “The Countdown is right here. We’ve been counting points since the start of the year, and it’s down to two races now so this is an important one.
