Motz Returns to Summit Motorsports Park for Summit Racing NHRA Nationals

While blasting down track in his jet engine-powered Kenworth truck and burning down signs in the process, Bob Motz has fascinated fans and formed friendships at Summit Motorsports Park for years, and while it looked as though he had his final performance at America’s Racetrack last year, he’s making a return for the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals this year.

In his highly-combustible capsule, he’ll lay flames and fly to 200-plus mph after the final pair of nitro-gulping cars cruise down track on Friday, June 23, and again after the final pair of nitro-gulping cars cruise down track on Saturday, June 24. His Friday performance will be followed by a colorful and cascading display of fireworks.

“I was thrilled to hear that Bob had these dates available, and I’m excited that he’s back racing and will be joining us for this event,” said Bill Bader, Jr., Summit Motorsports Park president. “It’s a very big deal for our fans, and it’s another ring in an already very big-ring circus.”

Reigning world champ Mia Tedesco one of the brightest stars at Cavalcade of Stars

NORWALK, OH – Mia Tedesco became the first woman in the 61-year history of NHRA drag racing to win a world championship in the cutthroat Super Gas category last season, making her one of the biggest stars competing at this weekend’s Cavalcade of Stars presented by Budweiser at Summit Motorsports Park in Northeast Ohio.

Tedesco, who hails from Pittsburgh, Pa., will be racing both her title-winning CARS Vehicle Service Contracts /VP Racing Fuels Super Gas Chevrolet Cavalier and her CARS Vehicle Service Contracts/Schepel Motors/NGK/Lucas Oil Top Alcohol Dragster at the event, giving her two great chances to score another victory or two.

“We’re excited about this race,” Tedesco said. “Both of my cars have been running great this year. We’d like to have a little more to show for it, but we’ve definitely learned over the years that you just have to keep working hard every weekend and the wins will come. Maybe this weekend will be the breakthrough race we’ve been waiting for.

Hessling Hopping into Moser’s Dragster for Cavalcade of Stars

While Joe Hessling had been sailing to wins in various cars and categories through the years at Summit Motorsports Park, he set his sights on Top Dragster in 2014.

He circled NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series and Mello Yello Drag Racing Series races on his calendar, but when the building of the powerplant for his American Race Cars-built dragster was delayed, friend and fellow racer Rob Moser invited him to pilot his American Race Cars-built dragster. It was a match, as Hessling earned his first Wally trophy in Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series’ Super Comp.

But when his own dragster was fit to fight in Top Dragster soon after that, he began laying down 6.30s via an Advanced Product Design-built big-block Chevy complemented with a ProCharger F-1X-12 and RaceDrive, and achieved a runner-up finish at the NHRA Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals in 2015 and a win at the 10th Annual Cavalcade of Stars presented by Budweiser in 2016, both at Summit Motorsports Park.

Top Fuel Driver Dixon to Dive into Top Alcohol Funny Car at Cavalcade of Stars

While Larry Dixon drove to three NHRA championships in a Top Fuel dragster, he’s readying to rumble in a Top Alcohol Funny Car at the 11th Annual Cavalcade of Stars presented by Budweiser, May 19-21, 2017 at Summit Motorsports Park.

The Hussey Performance-sponsored car is owned by Tony and Michael Bartone and packs a lot of punch with its blown and injected Brad Anderson bullet.

“When I saw the car at McKinney Corp, I asked the chassis builder about it and he said it’s a really good car but that Tony, who drives it, was having back trouble and was looking for a driver because he loves the sport and wants to be involved in it,” said Dixon, who has known the Bartones for 20 years. “I gave Tony a call, and he said they were planning to run the Charlotte NHRA race in late April with Sean Bellemeur driving, and that they would stay a day later so that I could get in the car, make some laps, try to get a license and see how it goes.”

With that mission accomplished, Bartone invited definite fan-favorite Dixon to drive his car in Top Alcohol Funny Car, which features 270 mph-plus vehicles, at the 11th Annual Cavalcade of Stars presented by Budweiser at Summit Motorsports Park. The event is poised to welcome the largest audience on the annual NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series North Central Division tour.

Summit Motorsports Park & Ohio Dept. of Transportation Agree to Work Together

Summit Motorsports Park and the Ohio Dept. of Transportation have agreed to fund a study to look at possible solutions involving three light poles on the park’s property that are in proximity to the Huron County Airport.

As an immediate step, both parties have agreed that the poles will be marked with red beacons and striped with reflective tape to ensure visibility for pilots approaching the Huron County airport. One of the poles has been in place for nearly 20 years, while the other two poles were part of a $400,000 lighting upgrade at the park last year.
