Smith got the jump off the line and beat 2015 champion Eddie Krawiec, 6.793 to 6.764. Riding his Victory Gunner-bodied V-twin, the win was Smiths’ first in the specialty event, which has been held at the Toyota NHRA Sonoma Nationals since 2014.
“To pull this off against a major factory team is amazing,” Smith told NHRA.com. “I’m happy for my team and for all the people who support us. I’m out here racing without a sponsor, so this means everything to me. We’re going to put this $25,000 to good use. It will help us a lot. We have a great bike. We have a bike that can win this championship and hopefully I get the funding I need to finish it off.”
The first round of the Mickey Thompson Pro Bike Battle, a special race-within-a-race that features the eight top riders based on points earned throughout the season at NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle national events, was filled with upsets. Three of the four lower-seeded riders advanced from the first round, and Smith narrowly defeated last year’s Pro Bike Battle winner LE Tonglet in the semifinals.
STOW, OH – A good, old-fashioned two-wheeled drag race shootout is on again this year. Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels is continuing its official sponsorship of the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Pro Bike Battle at northern California’s Sonoma Raceway—an all-star bonus event for the eight quickest Pro Stock Motorcycle riders in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series.
The Pro Bike Battle will be part of the 2018 Toyota NHRA Sonoma Nationals set for July 27-29.
Contested as a special race-within-a-race, riders earn points throughout the season based on finishing positions at Pro Stock Motorcycle national events. The eight riders accumulating the highest number of qualifying points earn a berth in the 2018 NHRA Pro Bike Battle.
“The Pro Bike Battle features some of the best matchups Pro-Stock motorcycle racing has to offer, and Mickey Thompson is thrilled to bring all the action to NHRA fans again in 2018,” said Ken Warner, Vice President of Marketing for Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels.
Record-breaking run made on Mickey Thompson ET Drag tires
STOW, OH – Hector Arana, Jr. made history Friday when he reached 200.23 mph during his second qualifying run at the NHRA Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla., making him the first Pro Stock Motorcycle rider to top 200 mph. He later improved to a 201.01 mph run on Saturday, resetting the world record.
Arana, who races on Mickey Thompson ET Drag motorcycle tires, took home $10,000 from Denso Spark Plugs. The company announced the prize money prior to the race on Friday as the Pro Stock Motorcycles prepared to make their 2018 NHRA season debut at the Gatornationals.
Arana is no stranger to holding records. The experienced competitor set the previous record of 199.88 mph in 2015. The 200-mph barrier was expected to be broken in 2018.
STOW, OH – Mickey Thompson’s ET Street S/S defined the drag radial tire, and with the release of four new fitments built for late model, high-horsepower muscle cars, Pro Street racers can now go even bigger and bolder from the street to the strip.
Built for powerful Pro Street applications that demand improved traction and the ride and handling of a radial, the ET Street S/S is now available in new P285/30R20, 29X15.00R15LT, 29X18.00R15LT and 31X18.00R15LT sizes.
Mickey Thompson is well-regarded as the innovator of drag radial race tires, and the new 31-inch ET Street S/S is one of the world’s largest.+
New 28-inch fitment designed for modern high-performance street cars
STOW, OH – Drivers of high-horsepower late-model street cars can have a true drag race look and performance with the recently expanded Sportsman S/R front radial tire line from Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels.
The skinny front tire solution for today’s heavy muscle cars, the Sportsman S/R front radial is now available in a 28X6.00R18LT size that carries up to 1,650 pounds per tire at 95 psi. Rated at load range F and approved for 4- to 5-inch-wide wheels, the tire pairs well with Mickey Thompson’s ET Street S/S & ET Street R (radial) rear tire lines for a top street performance combination.
Particularly suited for modern high-performance street cars, the Sportsman S/R radial also offers decreased weight for easier launches and quicker ETs at the track.
Buyers can receive up to $150 in rebates on the purchase of light truck tires and wheels from March 1 – May 15, 2018. Purchasing any four truck tires earns a $100 mail-in rebate and purchasing any four truck wheels earns a $50 mail-in rebate.
“The dependability and durability of Mickey Thompson’s truck tires and wheels continue to impress customers,” said Ken Warner, Vice President of Marketing for Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels. “The Spring Rewards Program is the perfect opportunity to save money and see why Mickey Thompson truck tires are the best off-road tires on the market.”
With a new top prize, anticipation mounts for 2018’s head-to-head competition
STOW, OHIO – Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels is sponsoring the 2018 Horsepower Wars $10K Shootout, the highly-popular head-to-head building competition that pits teams against one another in a battle to build the quickest drag car — with a $10,000 budget — in just 10 days.
This year, in addition to taking home the winning car, the top team will also receive a $10,000 cash prize, making the stakes very high in 2018.
The competition kicks off with five teams receiving $3,000 in cash and $7,000 in Summit Racing gift cards to buy their car and get it ready for the dragstrip. Along the way, teams have the chance to win bonus prizes and help (or penalties) through challenges, and fans will get to watch all the action unfold online.
After just 10 days of building at the Horsepower Wars Tech Center Facility, the teams will put their cars to the test and settle the shootout during the 2018 Shakedown at the Summit presented by Mickey Thompson in Norwalk, Ohio. The team with the quickest car will take home the $10,000 cash prize and the winning car.
