Holley EFI Race News: Barker Doubles Up in Gainesville, Massel Rules NMCA in Bradenton

Two of the biggest names in door-car drag racing – Jeffrey Barker and Bruno Massel – are already racking up wins in 2017. Barker dominated Top Sportsman competition in Gainesville, Fla., on consecutive weekends, and Massel topped all challengers in the Holley EFI Factory Super Cars category at the NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem event in Bradenton, Fla.

Barker, the most successful driver in the championship era of NHRA Top Sportsman racing, scored not just once but twice at Gainesville Raceway, first at the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Southeast Division event and the following week at the prestigious Gatornationals, one of the oldest events on the NHRA tour. At the wheel of his NOS nitrous-oxide-fed ’06 Chevy Cobalt, Barker earned the first of his back-to-back victories with a final-round decision over John Lynch at the Division 2 race. He led all qualifiers with a 6.55 at 213 mph – not far from what today’s Pro Stock cars run in the quarter-mile.

SAM and Lingenfelter Create $10,000 COPO Shootout at 2016 Holley LS Fest

In 2016, Holley’s LS Fest will be the place to be for LS enthusiasts the world over for the seventh straight year. COPO CamaroCompetitors, spectators, and vendors will descend on historic Beech Bend Raceway in Bowling Green, Kentucky for a weekend of GM LS-powered drag racing, drifting, autocross, and m more. This year, the drag racing portion of the event will get a shot in the arm thanks to the School of Automotive Machinists and Lingenfelter Performance Engineering.

The race will be known as “The Battle At The Green” and will be the ultimate COPO Camaro race in 2016. Falling under the rules of NHRA Stock and Super Stock Eliminator, a qualified pro ladder will be used, and COPO Camaros will race for a winner’s purse of $10,000* while the runner-up will receive a $1,000 payout. Racers will compete in an all “dial-in” format for eliminations with no heads up racing for the same class vehicles. Holley’s Bill Tichenor said, “This is exactly what we originally envisioned for LS Fest. We wanted to host a party and let the industry make it their own. We are super excited that the guys at Lingenfelter and SAM came up with this idea and we can’t wait to see it unfold. Each COPO since 2013 has come from the factory with Holley EFI and each naturally aspirated COPO has a Holley Hi-Ram intake, so it is only fitting that we spotlight the COPOs at the Holley LS Fest.”

Holley EFI Puts KB Racing in Victory Lane on Historic Day in NHRA Pro Stock

Holley EFI powered the entire Pro Stock field at the Winternationals, which included the eventual event winner Greg Anderson.

Day Two Qualifying Recap – NHRA Pro Stock Teams Quickly Adapting to Holley EFI

The field is now set for Pro Stock eliminations at the NHRA Circle K Winternationals in Pomona, CA. You could Drag Racingconsider day one of Pro Stock qualifying the first date for these teams with Holley EFI. That would make day two the second date, and teams are definitely sitting a little closer and getting more comfortable with the system as elapsed times are gradually dropping. Not only are teams adjusting to the change to EFI, but the cars now draw air from an inlet at the front of the car instead of a hood scoop, which causes higher intake temperatures that make it harder to draw as much power out of the cars.

Past that, teams are adapting to the new 10,500 rpm rev limit and shorter wheelie bars. All of these changes at once are forcing teams to put their thinking caps on to interpret all of the data from their Holley EFI systems, as well as the changes to the chassis.

Holley’s Robin Lawrence Advances to Semi-Finals in COPO Camaro at NHRA National Event

Although he did not campaign Daren Poole-Adams’ 2014 COPO Camaro full-time in 2015, “Uncle” Robin Lawrence Robin Lawrenceis no stranger to the drag strip. When he isn’t staying busy as Holley’s EFI Technical Sales and Motorsports Manager, he can usually be found on drag strips across the country. Robin is credited with the first 9-second pass in NMRA Real Street and he held the title of driving the fastest nitrous-fed LSx powered car until March 2013 by making a blazing 7.77 second pass at 179 miles per hour in his ’69 Nova. This experience was key to his success at the NHRA Midwest Nationals recently. Robin qualified 59th in a field of 61 cars, but that had little effect on how the rest of the race played out. After defeating Tyler Wudarczyk, Lawrence ran into Greg Stanfield in the third round.

Despite Stanfield’s small advantage at the light, Robin was able to drive around him to advance to the fourth round. In the fourth round, a .001 light and a run .008 seconds off of his index made for a nearly unbeatable package, allowing Robin to move onto the semi-finals. It is there that his run is finally ended as he was off of his index by .003 seconds more than Britt Cummings. Make no mistake, for someone that is not a full-time driver, going from 61 racers to the round of four is an incredibly impressive feat.
