Tony Schumacher Races to Semifinal Finish at PRO Superstar Shootout

BRADENTON, FL — After a strong finish to his 2023 campaign, eight-time NHRA Top Fuel world champion Tony Schumacher kept that momentum rolling into 2024, advancing to the semifinals of the PRO Superstar Shootout on Saturday at Bradenton Motorsports Park.

Following two-plus days of impressive test runs in his JCM Racing Leatherwood Distillery Top Fuel dragster, Schumacher opened qualifying with a strong run of 3.696-seconds at 330.96 MPH on Thursday. He added a pair of consistent runs in the low 3.70s to close out qualifying on Friday, giving the team, led by crew chiefs Mike Neff and Jon Schaffer plenty of confidence heading into race day.

That turned into an opening-round win against Antron Brown, with Schumacher going 4.116 at 275.73 MPH. Both cars lost traction early, but Schumacher was able to recover to advance to the semifinals in the competitive eight-car field. There, Schumacher lost traction while Clay Millican made a clean pass in the next lane, putting an end to his day. Schumacher, though, left Bradenton with plenty of positives, especially considering the major overhaul that was done to the car in the off-season.

Motorsports Icon Don Schumacher Leaves Lasting Legacy After Battle with Cancer

JUPITER, FL – It is with heavy hearts that the Schumacher family announce the passing of motorsports icon Don Schumacher. The NHRA team owner and Funny Car pioneer had spent the past several months privately battling lung cancer before succumbing to illness-related complications on Wednesday, December 20.

Schumacher, who was 79 at the time of his passing, leaves a lasting legacy on not only the NHRA community, where he etched his name as one of the sport’s most successful team owners and a champion for the advancement of safety innovation, but on the motorsports community as a whole. Schumacher’s contributions to the auto racing industry reach far beyond drag racing and have been widely recognized. In November 2022, Schumacher was honored at the NHRA Awards Ceremony where he was presented with the NHRA’s Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2019, he was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in Daytona Beach, Florida, and in May 2013, he was enshrined into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in Talladega, Alabama. He also joined a prestigious list of straight-line racing legends when he was invited into the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame in 2007.

A fierce Funny Car match racer in the 1960s and ‘70s who fielded multiple entries with top-notch drivers to fulfill the demand for bookings of his Stardust Funny Cars, Schumacher took a departure from motorsports in the early 70’s to grow the family business, Schumacher Electric. Tony Schumacher Scores 22nd Top 10 NHRA Top Fuel Finish

Pomona, CA – It’s no secret that Tony Schumacher and the SCAG Power Equipment Top Fuel team struggled to get their footing in the earlier part of the 2023 NHRA Camping World Series season, but by the time the new team led by Mike ‘Zippy’ Neff and Jon Shaffer reached the back half of the year, they started to see the fruits of their labor pay off. The recent uptick in performance led to two semifinal finishes and a quarterfinal appearance for the SCAG team during the six-race playoffs, and helped to propel Schumacher to his 22nd top 10 finish.

At the In-N-Out Burger NHRA Finals, the last event of the season, Schumacher qualified his machine 11th on the strength of his 3.703-second pass, which he clocked during the second qualifying session. Despite the strong Q2 run, the team faced traction issues throughout the remaining qualifying rounds and found themselves facing championship contender Leah Pruett as their first-round competitor. While there weren’t any title implications on the line for the eight-time Top Fuel world champ this time around, he had the opportunity to play spoiler for Pruett who was chasing her first title. Unfortunately, Schumacher’s traction issues continued into eliminations on Sunday morning, and he was sidelined after the first round when his machine smoked the tires while Pruett made a clean pass to advance.

Tony Schumacher Finds Positives in Second-Round Finish at NHRA Nevada Nationals

LAS VEGAS – Multi-time NHRA Top Fuel world champion Tony Schumacher went into the second round of eliminations at the NHRA Nevada Nationals full of confidence. His SCAG Power Equipment dragster was one of the most consistent cars in qualifying, and he made a weekend-best pass in the opening round of Sunday eliminations at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, but a dead cylinder at the hit of the throttle prevented Schumacher from moving past the quarterfinals.

Schumacher was ultra-consistent in qualifying. After a tire-smoking run in Friday’s first session, the eight-time world champion ran a trio of 3.72-second passes to qualify No. 9. That included a 3.729 E.T. at 330.63 MPH run in the second session on Friday and two 3.723-second passes on Saturday. He had the third-quickest E.T. of the third session to earn one bonus point.

That consistency in qualifying gave crew chiefs Mike Neff and Jon Schaffer the confidence to get aggressive for Sunday’s first round of eliminations against Shawn Langdon. Schumacher left the starting line just a thousandth of a second behind Langdon before charging down the track with a 3.697-second pass to finish ahead of Langdon’s 3.744 E.T. Schumacher had the starting line advantage in the second round against No. 1 qualifier Mike Salinas, but he slowed to a 3.867-second pass next to Salinas and his 3.688 E.T.

Tony Schumacher Comes Up Short in Battle of ‘Texan vs Texan’ at Dallas Fall Nationals

ENNIS, TX – Top Fuel’s winningest driver has a long history of success at the Texas Motorplex located outside of Dallas, and he was looking for more Motorplex magic on Sunday at the Texas NHRA Fall Nationals as he sought to pick up his first win of the year. Tony Schumacher has enjoyed a recent late-season performance boost, which saw him advance to the semifinals at two out of the first three playoff events. The Austin resident was hoping to take it one round further at the Ennis, Texas facility but traction issues during round one of eliminations ended Schumacher’s day early, preventing him from making a run at a seventh Dallas trophy.

Aboard the SCAG Power Equipment Top Fuel dragster, Schumacher’s weekend began with a solid 3.739-second baseline run right out of the trailer on Friday afternoon. On Friday night, he clocked his best E.T. and speed of the season when he lit up the scoreboards with a 3.690 E.T. at 333.46 MPH. With the unseasonably cool temperatures, many of his competitors also took advantage of the favorable conditions and despite the good run, Schumacher found himself in 10th at the end of the session.

Tony Schumacher Out Early, but Undeterred

CHARLOTTE, NC – After a get-healthy weekend in Reading, Pa, which saw Tony Schumacher advance three spots in the Top Fuel standings thanks to a strong qualifying performance and semifinal finish, the Mike Neff/Jon Schaffer-tuned SCAG Power Equipment team was looking to carry their newfound momentum down to Concord, N.C. for the betway NHRA Carolina Nationals.

At the second event of the six-race NHRA Countdown to the Championship playoff series, Schumacher and the SCAG team continued to run strong. Right out of the trailer, they unloaded with a 3.700-second pass, their quickest of the season, in the opening session on Friday night. During the third and final qualifying round, the team backed up their Q1 run by once again resetting their season-best E.T. The SCAG dragster blasted down the track with header flames high through the 1,000-foot beams to post a 3.692 E.T., placing them sixth on the Top Fuel ladder.

Armed with the advantage of lane choice, Schumacher drew No. 9 qualifier Shawn Langdon as his first-round opponent on Sunday morning. The two Top Fuel world champions were the first pair to hit the track on race day and while they left close together and were dead-even by the time they approached the 330-foot marker, Schumacher’s machine started to lose traction near the eighth mile, opening up the door for his opponent to pull away for the win.

READING, PA – After a regular season filled with struggles, eight-time NHRA Top Fuel world champion Tony Schumacher kick-started his Countdown to the Championship campaign with a get-healthy weekend at the Pep Boys NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway. His Reading, Pa. outing included a consistent qualifying effort and successful race day that saw Schumacher and the SCAG Power Equipment dragster move on to the rain-delayed semifinals on Monday morning.

Schumacher ran into tire smoke early in his first qualifying attempt on Friday, but he came back in the second session and laid down a smooth 3.737 E.T. at 328.54 MPH to sit eighth going into Saturday. His 3.755-second pass was the third-quickest run of the third session on Saturday, earning one bonus point. The five-time Reading winner rounded out qualifying with a 3.749-second effort in the final session, settling into the No. 9 position for Sunday eliminations. It was one of Schumacher’s best overall qualifying performances of the season.

In the first pair of Top Fuel eliminations after the national anthem on Sunday morning, Schumacher lined up with No. 8 qualifier Austin Prock. Schumacher was first off the starting line by a few thousandths of a second and led the whole way, winning with a 3.701 E.T. to Prock’s 3.716 E.T. Schumacher then faced fellow JCM Racing driver and points leader Justin Ashley in the second round. Schumacher moved first again, and it was enough of a holeshot advantage to beat Ashley’s quicker 3.707-second pass with a 3.716 E.T.
